1978 Ferrari 308 GTS and 2014 Porsche 981 Cayman owner here….I had a 986 Boxster and, wow, did I receive grief from many because of it. I truly didn’t care. That was a fantastic car that is so undervalued. It was so much fun, reliable and it sounded awesome; I bought it with an updated IMS. Peace of mind. I concur with the beige interiors. They, in my opinion, look great but when new. They do age poorly over time. Both of my cars now have black interiors. Thanks for the videos. Great job.
Why anyone would spec a car new with beige interior and carpets is beyond me, it's the worst colour you can get in any car. Even many manufacturers are not offering it anymore which is good
Enjoying your channel mate I got a 9974s in the lockdown with bore score and had the engine done locally and it failed ( you can not fit steel liners in a open deck 3.8 even if top hated ) have it too hartke got six cylinder fitted you having to do as much work as you can afford with the engine out all coolant pies rads brake pipes all the best from paisley Scotland👍👍
You are right about the general population preferring autos over manuals, but your average person isn't buying these cars second hand, it's enthusiasts. And for the 987s in particular, enthusiasts are buying them for their raw, simple, analog nature. A widely held opinion is that the manual is the simpler, more engaging transmission, especially over Tiptronic. If your shifter cables break, upgrade to Numeric. $490 and much higher quality than the factory cables. They will outlast the car. I did the job in my garage over a weekend.
I think the main thng is if you can do your own maintenance and repairs. And not everybody wants to do that it depends on the owner and as with any car motorcycle even piece of equipment store it inside out of the sun and the weather the sun beats the crap out of everything. Great video Nathan. I still like the older cars myself and probably stick with the pre 1970 stuff. 🙂👍
I've had the pleasure of doing 10k in a 760li and then a 991.1 turbo s. I'm so sad about was has happened to bmw. When I was young they were my favourite. Now I don't even consider them
Sorry to be so off topic but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Sebastian Ryder thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Geez… been following you and subscribed for a loooong time… and recently I’m transitioning from BMW to Porsche… but where do you find these “$5K” Boxsters? Unless they either needs lots of work or they are salvage title, you can’t find them that cheap anymore… it seems that the “next big thing” are Boxsters…
I have an 07 Cayman S with black leather in manual. It "seems" to have appreciated in value over the 3 years I've owned it, to the tune of $5K to $10K give or take (Australian dollars). But then, most cars have climbed during 2020 and 2021.
Everything is relative. I have driven BMW since 1994. Stalked them since 1974. I prefer to buy them new and maintain them regularly. The maintenance is more affordable than Porsche but as you point out, the resale value of BMW sucks versus Porsche. I have been fortunate with the reliability of my BMWs but I am now shopping for a Porsche to use as a second vehicle for the summer. I have avoided the older models due to price and IMS / air / oil cooling. Enjoy the channel. Keep up the good work. Thx.
Gospel right there. Unfortunately most people are not fortunate enough to buy a used BMW from a legend such as yourself. Instead, they get a neglected one, and problems begin to stack up. Often times they as well neglect the car, then the 3rd owner gets really screwed
I just drove my 07 Cayman S 2K miles. Never worried about reliability...that is until it locked the keys in the car without me in it - on top of a mountain in North Carolina on a Sunday. Not nice. Luckily I knew of the not-totally-screwed-cable to release the trunk. Shout out to Tow Truck Tim who came and took my rear wheel off so I could get to it! P.S. I have the natural tan interior. It's mint except for the soft tan coating on the plastic. I can gouge it with my fingernail. My Mazda 3 has a more robust finish! Still rather rip the Cayman any day, all day. Whahoo!
Nathan, i really really have to disagree with you about the BMW's. I drive my E39 535i regularly from Skopje, Macedonia to Frankfurt Germany. That is 1800km one way. I do this at least 3 times a year. It just made 400 000km last month and it purrs like a kitten. Last year i made almost 4000km trip around Greece and just last month a 1800km trip to Albania. On roads that you barely see in USA. Well, maybe in the middles states. I had E28 520i, E36 320i and now this 535i. Never had any problem with all of them. Just regular maintenance. One day if funds allows it i want to make a trip with the 535i from Gibraltar to Vladivostok and back. That is 30+ thousand kilometers.
I prefer mercdes than bmw. And I have had a few of each , I now have a Porsche Cayman s. Which I love .. in the uk everyone has a bmw. There as common as fords ..I’ve had a 328bmw 525 bmw , and a 325 m sport ( 3? Litre) conv (2009) a few mercs ... as well ...
Little bit over dramatization about BMW’s. Advertising new channel is ok, but that isn’t correct so as explained, or I have driven somekind of miracle BMW’s.
Your car does have an IMS bearing ! , and it’s not serviceable without stripping down the engine , the IMS ran from start , 1996 to 2009 , then gen 2 987’s finally got rid of the ims but they have problems of their own ,the best porsche to buy is the 981 , the issues are ironed out and a much better car that’s why they hold their value more , I know these cars very well , the 996/986 ran to 2004 , 987/997 gen 1 end of 2004-2008 and gen 2 2009-2012 , you have to be accurate if your going to be a porsche aficionado
From 2006 on the ims bearing was very uncommon to fail , better chance of the car getting crashed from driver error than the ims to fail , there is many write ups on google about it
@@alfatech8741 you kind of find if a porsche is cheap it’s cheap for a reason , the 981 is probably the best version of the boxster and cayman , no engine issues , much nicer interior , the only critic I could give it is the center console controls are a bit awkward, but it is a minor gripe on a brilliant car , flat 6 lushness having driven the 718 and 981 side by side the 981 give a car enthusiast satisfaction a turbo engine couldn’t ever
I would be interested in your Ims thoughts. I used the Pelican parts kit to replace mine when I did my clutch. Not hard or expensive to do. My old bearing still felt fine when I pulled it out. I think ball bearings inside a motor is not a good idea. They are going to need replacing like other idler pullys and water pumps etc. However it's not the end of the world. Does your Cayman have the bigger sealed bearing ims.?
@@NathansPorscheWorkshop Ok so you are lucky, however, you have to split the crankcase to replace it. I would update mine to the bigger bearing with another IMS shaft if I ever decide to get my motor rebuilt. ( which I may need to do soon if a new oil separator does not solve my smoke at startup problem)
@@NathansPorscheWorkshop you have the knowledge and skill to work on these vehicles tho. The typical buyer probably isn’t going to be wrenching on their Porsche?
