  • NASA video animation showing how its concept of a lightweight, low-drag flexible wing could evolve over time as technology matures. Using tailored structures and active controls to alleviate gust loads and suppress flutter, a flexible high-aspect-ratio wing would be significanly lighter than today's stiff aircraft wings. The wing's shape would also be actively controlled to minimize drag in the cruise and maximize lift for take-off and landing. NASA plans to begin to developing the technology using Lockheed Martin's unmanned X-56A active flutter-suppression testbed.

    My biggest concern is the effects of turbulence and repeated stresses over time, esp. The last design if the wing already flexes and you compile turbulence flex on top of that... Seems like a fun ride for the cabin

      Actually with advanced software, a wing this flexible and controllable would be able to perfectly counter the effects of turbulence, deforming itself in the exact way required to absorb all the turbulence and prevent it from being transferred to the main body of the aircraft.
      It's the air equivalent of wheel suspension, but could potentially work even better.

    Material science is making great strides, I say let's ditch a few intermediate steps, and jump a few evolutionary incremental versions and get down to business by next year, with actual wings being made for commercial purposes in 2-3 years.

    Isn't the service life of something that flexes less than the srevice life of its equivalent with a hinge? In other words, doesn't something that flexes fatigue faster? It seems to me that this is the biggest issue to deal with.

    Oscillating wing may reduce friction as air becomes Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid alternatively.

      You would have to go pretty fast for that to come into effect. And at that point it would not matter. The speeds you are talking about happen at speeds commercial airliners don't go. And at altitudes that commercial airliners don't go. At this speed and altitude, the speed between stall and the air acting non-Newtonian to such an extent that causes the plane to literally disintegrate.
      The wing is designed to bend up and down instead of forward to back.
