  • Hong Kong authorities have accelerated the legislative process to pass Article 23, the city’s own national security law. The law covers the offences of treason, insurrection, espionage, sabotaging national security, theft of state secrets and external interference. Maximum penalties for some of them include life imprisonment. Article 23 is meant to complement the Beijing-imposed National Security Law, which only covers four offences. CNA spoke to Andrew K P Leung, China Strategist and Chairman at Andrew Leung International Consultants.

A statement from the Hong Kong spokesperson stated:
First, the core essence of the Sino-British Joint Declaration is that China will resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong and does not give the UK the right to interfere in Hong Kong affairs after its return. The British side has no sovereignty, governance or supervision over Hong Kong after its return, and is not qualified to make irresponsible remarks on Hong Kong affairs.
Second, the National Security Regulations for Hong Kong will not affect Hong Kong’s continued enjoyment of a high degree of autonomy in accordance with the Basic Law, nor will it detract from the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents. The crime is clearly defined and targets only a very small number of people who endanger national security. Law-abiding people do not have to worry about accidentally falling into the law. The normal activities of foreign institutions and personnel in Hong Kong are fully protected by law.
Third, the Hong Kong National Security Regulations are a law to ensure security and development. It fully considers the need for Hong Kong to operate as an international financial, shipping and trade center and expand smooth and convenient international connections. It will not affect the normal development of business consultation, market research and other activities and the free flow of information. Instead, it will create a more stable and more stable environment for Hong Kong. A predictable business and development environment.

@@rickgifford-lp3kn Perhaps you'd like to read up on what the UK intends to do with its own security law. For HK, it means you can't commit terrorist attacks like trying to blow up buildings and election interference. If the UK gets its way, you won't be able to protest against Gaza genocide in UK lest you be arrested as a 'terrorist'. Not even sure whether any protests are allowed in Singapore.

(Tribal aid workers targeted in Gaza City, 23 killed)
At least 23 Palestinians working to distribute aid, have been killed by an Israeli airstrike in Northern Gaza.
Warplanes struck near the Kuwait Roundabout where supplies for the north are distributed.
The intersection is on the Salah al-Din road -- a main route linking northern and southern Gaza.
There have been several attacks on Palestinians seeking aid, at the same location.
Last month, Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd there, killing 118 people seeking food.

should have passed it within a few years of 1997 handover already when HK had more choices and power to shape it. Now it comes back after the opposition Pan-Dem party became defunct. They had no intentions to follow One Country part of the model in the first place it seems.

It’s worth pointing out that the UK’s National Security Act that came into force last year contains many provisions with vague definitions and grants law enforcement agencies sweeping power, which can be easily abused.

Those object only becuase they have no good intention apart from valuing peace, order and rule of law, And they go about now making unfounded fear mongering and hype it and said it is notnwell delibrerate which is utter lies. Those foreign that ojeccted They have more dragonian laws in their countries. I challenge them to repel thier bill if they think this is draganian. The HK bill is mild vs what they have on their so call developed countries.
No curtailment of freedom in HK

National security law is fine. But the reason why foreign capital and companies are leaving is because the law is drafted so vague, that enforcement can be too arbitrary. Foreign firms have also no longer got trust in Hong Kong’s judiciary.

In 2020, John Lee was involved in the repression and imprisonment of Hong Kongers 🇭🇰 who protested the Beijing-imposed "national security" law.
    - He still can't open a bank account even in Hong Kong amid being sanctioned by the US.

Singapore and citizen of the world can be detained in Hong Kong under the article 23 if you criticize the HK government. That's how draconian this new security law is. So think twice or triple before going to Hong Kong after this new law is enacted.
Singapore and many countries also have similar security law. However, Singapore and many countries also have democracy and the rule of law.
