- As the war in Ukraine rages on, the country faces a demographic crisis, with a shrinking population due to migration, a plummeting birth rate, and fighting that continues to take more lives. The generation facing the biggest threat is young men. There are just not enough to meet the demands of both the battlefield and the workforce. Megumi Lim reports from Kyiv.

Not sure about the military war dead numbers but this news video stated Ukraine population (presumably based on 1991 borders) as of 2023 was 29m.
This was more or less the figure given by pro-Russian sources approximately 1 year earlier.
People could agree to disagree on the 800K figure but after 2.5 years, pro-Russian sources did have some level of reliability.
Not surprised if Ukraine military was dead had exceeded 500K.

Yea I see no way of salvaging this situation. Ukraine already had one of the lowest birth rates in Europe before the war and now with the invasion things have only gotten more dire. With far right ultra nationalists groups being present in Ukraine I dont think migration will be looked as a possible a solution which will only make things worst in the long run. I am really skeptical that western nations will help rebuild either. The US is in a debt spiral and the EU is becoming less and less competitive economically, not to even mention their similar population woes with low birth rates and aging demographics.

I now think that our "Rust Belt" is as devastated and depopulated as say Ukraine is now, but without all the noise. We just did it (to ourselves!) by Administration, and creating a small but lively population of Billionaires I suppose. It's surprising how much of America is vacant and ruined! You can drive all day and not really see any people or anything you would want, in some regions. I'm not well-traveled, that's just my experience in the South mostly.
