HK is an example of failure to change with the times. Some HKers need to understand that HK is part of an economic cluster, not a standalone window to China anymore.

I reckon that no matter how hard Hong Kong tries to integrate or stay aloof, neither way would save Hong Kong from failing tbh. Integration could kill Hong Kong (at least the very concept) but the current environment has changed, no longer allowing HK to play wingman. Sadly, the existence of Hong Kong has never been sustainable; it has always been an oddity in history somehow gaining advantages from its neighbour's (not particularly china, SEA countries as well) timely misfortunes. There's very little HK can do to change that given it physical and geopolitical limitation, not like it's their fault but it's reality, just like Detroit never had the capacity to transform since its existence and establishment were conditioned.

I think that too will change as Chinese cities have become much more developed than HK. Previously, it was a destination as people from the “mainland” wanted to see this marvelously advanced city, and also wanted to shop there. This is no longer the case as its prices are higher and its development cannot compare to the first line cities in China. HK residents themselves now go to Shenzhen at the weekend for shopping and entertainment rather than do this at home. HK also sealed its fate Re Chinese tourism when it began to insult the mainland Chinese, egged on by Apple Daily which labeled the mainlanders “locusts”.
I think the “one country two systems” has also been a tragedy for HK as it has been mired in poor governance due to the ineffectual bureaucrats left over from the colonial era maintaining power and kowtowing to the plutocrats and property developers while China has maintained a hands-off approach, even as their own cities have been much more efficiently and effectively governed.

Draconian? The USA and UK also have national security laws, and they are far more "draconian." Do your research and you will learn the truth.

It is painful to transform and it may fail at the end. But the world is changing, global south is booming and challenging the old rich countries, as one of the old rich places, HK has lost its competitive edges to neighboring ambitious cities in many areas. Its transformation should have started years ago but money is too easy to earn before COVID so there is no enough motivation. It is changing from top to bottom now, spending lots of money, not seeing much return so far, getting increasing integrated into the big market of China, particularly the GBA, target to leverage the money and talent flow to jumpstart its fading economics. We need to survive before we thrive.

HK residents are friendly and polite, mainlanders are rude, abrupt and grossly disrespectful. HK has a sense of identity, mainland’s identity is rooted in money - love money above all else. HK is a place of hygiene, mainland is sickeningly unhygienic. HK equals quality and attention to detail and is well maintained, mainland equals exactly the opposite - everything no matter new or old is dirty, under maintained, falls apart… HK has a healthy logic thinking mindset of doing things, mainland has a mindset rooted in believes that carry no scientific evidence. The list really is exhaustive. Well, maybe some prefer the less finer things in life. What even is "just another Chinese city"? Hong Kong's role stagnated because Chinese exports are no longer cheap, and because China can build its own seaports. It's that simple. The only way to restore Hong Kong's past role is to force China to be poor forever. A sad, unrealistic state of mind to be in.

I need to say that as an expat living in the GBA the transport network is extensive but as for convenient, not at all. The bullet train stations are all unfortunately very far removed from the city centers and it takes a lot of effort to travel to those. Then there is the extensive security measures one has to go through when entering even just a subway station and the line up for these can and does take a very long time. Then one has to endure the shoving and pushing at the bullet train station’s security check points to enter the station; again a lot of time wasted. Then there is the waiting for the bullet train. One cannot really meticulously plan your trip around specific times because of all the security check points and long line ups; one never knows how long those can take, and the crowds of people one might encounter (yes there are crowds in all major big cities but unfortunately they are not very organized around these parts). Apart from long waiting times one is also exposed to herding like environments with endless railings and obstacles in stations to navigate instead of just free flow foot traffic. Taking a cab to a bullet train station… the traffic is a nightmare. So all in all as extensive as the network is it is not very efficient. The complete opposite can be said of HK though. Extremely efficient on every possible level. I do hope that on that mainland side they can make improvements. Then there is also customs to consider when entering and leaving HK and Macau. For comparison, I live 100km from HK Central and it’s a 1.5 hour drive should i want to drive there (excluding customs). It’s at least three hours on a good day if I take public transport from my house (excluding customs) - a far stretch from the so called one hour loop.

Hong Kong is a bridge linking China and the outside world as the host said. This is a good comparison to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The bridge is a great engineering marvel but with very little traffic. HK used to be an important financial centre, but if it cannot have capital flow through it. It is like the bridge, a white elephant. If there is a need to travel, with or without the bridge, there would still be people travelling between two places by hook or by crook. If the GBA is so promising, with or without HK, it would still flourish. Economics and politics affect each other. Not much have been mentioned around politics in HK in this episode. Might be because it is a taboo subject in HK now. The HK that we know is gone! It is like a person with Alzheimer. Looks the same as before, but we know the outcome.

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 6 месяцев назад

I wouldn't say it's a taboo subject, but rather it's been off the rails for far too long so China hit the reset button.
The main problem with HK is that it never understood the inevitable sunset of its "Pearl of the Orient" monopoly. With China growing this rapidly and having a dozen seaports just like HK, how long can you stay relevant as "exporter of cheap Chinese goods"?
The fallacy of the China-hating mindset is that those wallowing on this mentality wish that China stayed poor forever. A big, big mistake. Hong Kong was built to exploit China of the 1980s. Whether it wants to develop a stronger local economy or adapt with China's tech boom, either way it is woefully unprepared to coexist with the China of the 21st century.

There's a crush of people, the queues are ridiculous, mainlanders are savages when it comes to waiting in line, and you have to pass customs. There are some differences between the two societies. HKers know how to wait in a line, respect personal space, don't spit or urinate in the street, and most can speak English. These differences are never more visible than during the commute between the mainland and HK.

HK will not reshine under the Beijing's direct administration but will become a battle field within years.
The only reason that Beijing's taken over of the full control of HK administration is eyeing on the trillion HKD of reserves of HK people.
Billions or even in tens of billions HKD can now and were already been easier passed in the legislation under Beijing's direct control.
Land and the HKD reserves are used to fuel CCP's dream in Chips industry or the oversupply of PRC infrastructure construction industry.

Everyone in the world should have awaken and experiencing China's threat to the World under an insane administration in PRC China since Trump's presidential administration.
HK's future lies on when PRC China collapses and breaking up into small nations or CCP/PLA's invasion on Taiwan and only then, HK will return to the british administration as the consequence of PRC's violations of the International Law on Sino-British Joint Declaration and HK will become an important military base for the US/NATO, which is crucial to the real benefits of the democratic world and the safety of Taiwan and the countries surrounding South China Sea.

HongKong would be overshadowed by the Cities of Shanghai, Shenzen, and their likes. Just based from my opinion. Basic logic that the Central Government would put emphasis in the development of a financial hub created by the party/`s central government. And the central government perceived Hongkongers not your typical Chinese. (Sons and daughters never raised by them). So they would try to develop a financial district that would be the symbol of China, according to their image. For me the beauty of HongKong and Macao is having that unique identity. The crossbreed of East and West. The vibrant territory may loose some of its glitters/shine incase the west migrated out of the area.

Singapore is only lucky that she is an independent country but still needs to be aware of CCP's all aspects of intervention and even political subversion.
CCP PRC China has been sending hundreds of thousands CCP members and millions of brain washed PRC nationals to penetrate into HK society even ever since before 1997 handover.

GBAE integration with the mainland is inevitable and undoubtably beneficial for HK in the long term. However, this gain will be offset by HK losing its status as one of the major international financial hubs, affecting the city adversely. This phenomenon has already begun, with decreasing FDI, departure of foreign enterprises and talents. HK certainly benefit when it integrates with other cities in the area, what happens when China economy continues its current trajectory and faces additional economic headwinds? No common law, no financial transparency, stability and investor confidence. This documentary also ignores another large negative impact, how this close integration will affect ordinary HKongers, who are way more Westernized in terms of tastes and mindsets than the mainlanders. Where to migrate to in Asia that has this old HK economic dynamics and freedom? Well, just follow rich mainlander and HK migrant$$$ to Singapore!

HK flourish from 60's-90's is because the Western wants to do business with Mainland China, so HK plays a role as access point to China. Until China begin to open ports around all the coastal cities then HK is no longer the only access to China. It's not about the Communist party or China hates HK, it's about Western countires have other options to do business with China. Many HK people still having the mind set of they are better than the people in China. This is their wake up call!
