my sister asked Sedaris to sign one of his books to a friend of hers who is a huge fan. Sedaris asked if her friend was gay, to which she emphatically answered no. Sedaris grinned and signed the book. It read: dear so-and-so, everyone thinks you're gay. David Sedaris
a lot of DS' humor has dysfunctional sorrow at its core.
The podcast S-Town centers around a person who, in his first email to the person who created the podcast, attempted to signal his sexuality by saying, "Let's just say I might be a fan of David Sedaris." So apparently that's a thing!
He signed my BF's copy "Sorry about the black baby" implying I had cheated lol so un-pc but it was funny. Very few people have that kind of humor.
Indeed!
Exactly! But from his books, his whole family sounds cool. Amy is awesome.
He has a great memory. I met David Sedaris twice. The second time, after signing my book, he said, "Have we met before?" I was floored! And he talked to me like we had been friends forever. I'm in awe of this man.
Thats a great story!

It's a ploy he uses and admits to :p
Watch his segment on micro aggressions on cbs Sunday
😂😂😂😂😂😂
"Me Talk Pretty One Day" is the greatest book I've ever read.
absolutless agreed!!
The "Big Boy" chapter had me crying with laughter.
It's superb on audio book, he reads it himself...his voice adds so much depth-
Yup, ironical of me :)
I haven't read it in years, but I remember how much I enjoyed it. I need to read it again!
"You look great!"
"We have makeup on."
I LOVE that Sedaris says, "WE have makeup on." LMAO
Seems like one of his trademarks is just ripping the cover off of things and getting a rise out of people for it
It's a privilege to live in the same time period as David Sedaris and Stephen Colbert. Love these guys.
Well said, agreed. Wait till you see the amazing characters who turn up in 2019 :-D
This interview is so brief. He could give an hour long interview and keep you on edge. I really love David Sedaris on This American Life. He is so funny. I think his Christmas elf story where he worked in a department store as a pretend elf for fake santa clause is exceptionally funny.
EQ-smoove That's just how he talks. Have you ever heard of "Me Talk Pretty One Day"?
Chris Komanoff ... good stuff indeed....
thanks for clarifying that he wasn't posing as an elf while working for the real santa clause. ;-)
He's on Radio 4 here in the UK constantly. You can probably get that content somehow, outside the UK.
I'm a big fan of his Radio 4 broadcasts.
A classic
There's no point me even attempting to write a witty, clever comment here; it couldn't possibly compete with David Sedaris: 'The Sea Section', 'Row v Wave' & 'Seaman got you into this'. Brilliant!
I didn't even catch that it could be "row" instead of "Roe" until I saw this.
Though I suppose roe has its own double meaning when it comes to the ocean.
what no isea? seasaw?
Me Talk Pretty One Day really helped my anxiety with coping in a foreign country and trying to learn the language as an adult:
"Things began to come together, and I went from speaking like an evil
baby to speaking like a hillbilly. "Is thems the thoughts of cows?" I'd
ask the butcher, pointing to the calves' brains displayed in the front
window. "I want me some lamb chop with handles on 'em.”
Jenni Vuorinen love that story!
I know this aired a yr ago but wanted to tell you I love that book too! My husband and I both enjoyed Amy and David Sedaris. I lost hubby in Sept but we used to go around randomly saying, "Hey Honey? Are them the thoughts of cows?" Still cracks me up.
@@allisonyoung4007 I hope you meet them and tell them your story. Maybe on Instagram. So cute/sweet.
@@deborahbaca1345 Thx for the idea! It still warms my heart when I see him.
Calves brains? 😳 ....omg! Humans are so evil. An invasive species, killing our "roommates" or "co-habitators" against their will, chopping them up, and selling the parts. Barbaric, and cruel 🤢
If we went to the butcher, and there was a golden retriever puppy brain for sale....we would all be outraged.
Meat is for emergencies only. Literally when there's nothing else to eat ONLY.
There's literally nothing in meat we need to be healthy.
Ahh I love David Sedaris!! His voice is so charming, his witticisms even more so. And he picks up trash for 4-9 hours a day?
What a wonderful human!
David Sedaris is one of the most genuine, funny authors alive. I also recommend listening to him read his books, hysterical!
Picks up the roadside litter near where he lives. Yet another reason to love David Sedaris!
It's admirable, but couldn't someone who ISN'T a genius do the roadside cleanup? He says he spends 4-8 hours A DAY on it.
I love him. I especially love how he nearly said that there was 'rubbish' by the roadside but quickly changed it to 'litter'. He's been here too long :)
I'VE WAITED 84 YEARS FOR COLBERT TO INTERVIEW DAVID AND IT'S ONLY 6 FUCKING MINUTES (how did he never interview him on the Report but Jon Stewart did like 6 times?!)
i wonder if the old jon stewart interviews are available.
david sedaris is an extraordinary writer and, like all decent americans, he has sensibly decided to live in england :p
They're on the Comedy Central website
ah k, thanks... i shall go look
He lives in Paris. And here is my favorite one: www.cc.com/video-clips/wewlh0/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-david-sedaris
Thanks for posting that
I love him so very very much!!! I remember reading "Naked" while I was on a bus, and burst out laughing, and a few people looked at me, and I just
held up the book so they could see the cover and they just smiled and nodded.
Thank you, David, for all you do. But also, for pointing out that luck and who one knows has a lot to do with "success" or having made "it". Talent, is key, and hard work, too. But many people who are talented, and who work their bums off don't make it big. It is lovely how humble he is. I love his work so much.
True, but I don't think he's the slightest bit humble in reality! He often talks about how he grew up with a rock-solid conviction that he and his family were better than almost everybody
david sedaris is delightful glad colbert puts authors out and not just celebrities.
Marc H, to me authors are the real celebrities
David is a celebrity. He is just not of the vacuous video variety.
When You Are Engulfed in Flames was ridiculously funny....I think David Sedaris is even better in an audio book. So much depends on delivery.....
Very true hearing the books is so relaxing and great:)
I love David, and sometimes I feel he doesn't come over as well on TV as other media. Self doubt seems to inhibit him.
In this interview, however he was the brilliant person that we know he usually is, when performing or public speaking.
It's great to see how relaxed he is with Stephen.
he is on bbc radio 4 quite regularly and he is excellent there.
Nathan Grant Yeah, very true, that's what I meant by other media. Via the medium of radio, he seems to allow himself to be the great orator, and. comic that he is.
I'm from the UK, so it was through Radio 4 introduced me to him. 😀
yah, tbh i feel a little privileged to have him here.
Nathan Grant
It's so true, we moan, but unlike in "The greatest country on earth", we all have the right to clean drinking water, and nobody's first reaction when they are given a terrible medical diagnosis is: "I can't afford this, I'm going to lose my house, and my family will lose everything".
Our parents are allowed time off work during the most formative period of our lives.
We are incredibly lucky.
We even get decent weather occasionally. lol.
:-)
KLM
Tho not everyone is able to relax in front of an audience of, essentially, several million people.
Sadaris is one of the greatest American writers who ever lived, and a wonderfu ranconteur. Love that man
I'm surprised you don't hear him compared more often to Mark Twain... I'm sure it happens, but I haven't heard it
Saw David perform The Santaland Diaries in Denver last year. Just made me love him more.
I'm so envious of his clarity and complete recall of his life! Think I'll read something of his after seeing this.
I love listening to David Sedaris reading his stories - comedy gold.
people like David Sedaris are gems and treasure for society. Cherish them.
Give the guy a show. Even if it crashes and burns in a season, I'd watch!
i don't think he could handle it though, i believe he's selectively social and get's easily exhausted., I think
@Mendy Peters: Agreed. And he's smart enough to know better. He had to be growing up with a sister like Amy.
"We have makeup on."
Hahahah I love Sedaris!
I'm still trying to figure out what was SO funny about that. Seemed to me, I guess, mildly witty in passing
Loooove Sedaris!!
Was not expecting that voice. One of my favorite authors
Brandi Hollaway one of the funniest things I’ve seen is his reading an excerpt from 50shades of grey. It’s a video on RUclips. hilarious
The one author that I recommend getting the audiobook instead.
When I read his books I can hear his voice in my head. It's quite distracting! :-)
Miss Kitty Fantastico Ooh noted, thanks
Heard him before I read him, on a Prairie Home Companion and or This American life, both PBS radio shows. Later i got some CDs. Knowing his voice, having it in my head, enhances my pleasure of reading his work.
Yeah his audiobooks are wonderful. The only other author I think does an equally fantastic job reading his own work is Neil Gaiman.
Miss Kitty Fantastico But caution when driving. I once started laughing so hard I was incapable of seeing. Had to pull over. :)
All I know is I adore David!! His POV has made me smile at tragic moments in way that is both sympathetic and so out of place! Thank you!
David Sedaris's "Santaland Diaries". Crumpet the Elf. HAHAHAHA!
A classic
His memory actually is amazing.
Everytime I say, I'm gonna have you fired, I bust out laughing. my husband thinks I'm crazy but his Christmas elf story is hilarious.
I love David Sedaris. I can only imagine that whole family growing up.
The first time I heard him was on NPR and he was singing like Billie Holiday.
I sure hope he does audio books. It's his voice and his dry way of telling a story that I find hilarious. Love this guy!
That boat joke deserved a standing effing ovation.
I just adore David. His writing is so great!
How good is that. David Sedaris - you be da word boss. Great intv Mr Coal Bear.
I love this man so much. I've read everything by him.
The realness! I love David Sedaris. I've never laughed as hard at a book as I did at the end of Me Talk Pretty One Day.
‘Pitty Ting’ from Barrel Fever made me almost per my pants.
I remember reading an excerpt of one of his books in an english class back in high school and it was absolutely genius. So unique and hilarious.
Brilliant writer... shame the interview wasn't longer
I just finished Calypso.... OMG I have never laughed out loud like that. Fantastic book!!!
"..but I have been following your progress" TOOK ME OUT!! lol
Note to self: Dig out Strangers With Candy DVDs. 😊😊😊😎
naked is my fave book from david I really think its the best.
I loved his work "Stadium Pal." I am such a child. Haha.
Heard David Sedaris before I read him, on a Prairie Home Companion and or This American life, both PBS radio shows, many moons ago. Later i got some CDs. Knowing his voice, having it in my head, enhances my pleasure of reading his work.
Had the pleasure of seeing him in person in San Luis Obispo at Performing Arts Center, about 8 or so years ago.
I sat a few feet from him on lobby stairs before show as he signed books, puffing on ciggs. He's since quit smoking.
This interview has really stuck with me, the words when it comes to after reading the book just keep coming back to me ringing true in other parts of life. "you get to put the book down and be yourself, i had to read the book and then still be the person in the book". It's crazy accurate and the perfect wording to describe sharing anything personal with anyone else (thoughts, emotions, work, story) where people aren't often emotionally aware of their own knowledge that they acted how they did.
then sedaris asks the ringing question, "Do you think you've changed a lot? I mean maybe your circumstances have but fundamentally, do you think you've changed in 30 years?" and I think about that a lot, and how my fundamentals have never really changed, and most people are probably driven by similar or the same fundamentals but our circumstances merely change.
Anyways, Sedaris is amazing!
The 1st Sedaris book I read had me laughing so hard I developed bronchial inflammation.
lol
I've read and performed so much of his stuff. that's what he sounds like. amazing
Love David Sedaris' work!
Oh he such a brilliant person.
I flipping love David!
I have read "me talk pretty one day" in Farsi. It is one of my favorite books. Know that I am an immigrant myself, I resonate with it even more. Thanks David.
Soooo looking forward to reading this, since I read about it in The New Yorker.. On the waiting list at library.
I love this man!!!
i m proud of u Colbert tooooo... i love uuuuuu. 👍👍👍
I love David so much! I haven't changed who I am that much in 30 years. So true. And I really hate that people throw their trash out. I pick up trash anytime I see it.
The Sea Section
David is such a brilliant gentleman.
I'm in love. Thank you
Wish this were longer!
I always loved sedaris' pieces on This American Life, and he looks close to what I imagined what he would look like.
Love Love his books !!!!
I love Sedaris' audiobooks.
Most funny human alive......sister Amy is second. I can’t imagine how fun it would be to spend time with this family. First time I heard David was on PBS driving home late night in the country. It was the Santa’s helper story when he works at Macy’s. I had to pull over. It hurt I laughed so hard.
I just read David Sedaris's book -When You Are Engulfed In Flames. Wow! So-o-o-o entertaining and I feel more accepting of my own ways!
He really is one of the best writers!
Kudos to Stephen for having Sedaris on, reminding me that I read one of his books two or threes years ago, purely by random, thought it was about is funny as interesting as comedy writers got and now I can go read some his more books! YAY!
He’s a treasure
He is awesome
I love David Sedaris
Looking spiffy, Dave!
lovely guy
Stephen Colbert, you just got owned. LOL
made my day
Colbert misspoke the name of the book. He called it "Theft AND Finding".
I love Theft By Finding. I find the first 7 years a lot more interesting though, before David moves to Chicago. I like hearing about his struggling days as a directionless young man. After he hits it big, I find him harder to relate to.
I noticed that, and watched Sedaris' face to see if he flinched at all, and he didn't!
our cabin is called "The SEdaris Cabin" as we bought the cabin after reading the story about when his family did NOT buy a sea side house. We then knew we HAD to buy something or we'd always regret it.
Let's explore diabetes with owls, Me talk pretty one day....all the books I have read and will do again! Great Author!!
The sedaris family seems fascinating.
Watching this after reading his book Calpyso is pretty much the best thing ever.
David is a genius writer and story teller.
Was this abridged?!?! When Seders said, "Semen got you into this...," it seemed like that was the first half of a joke and the second half got cut!
CBS person hit the panic button when heard the word semen
Yea that was a terrible edit.
No, he was talking about naming a boat Row V. Wave (a play on the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion) and painting "Seamen got you into this." on the side of it.
the way he said semen got you into this sounded like there was a second part that something got you out. But since it was an abortion joke they probably cut it.
one of his most interesting guests..
love you sedaris!
Row V Wave
He is a great story teller. So funny. He's like the American Alan Bennett.
He's a 21st century Truman Capote.
I've been following your progress 😚
So I love both of these men but I appreciate David acknowledging that there is some luck that goes into becoming famous and successful. Even liberal celebrities like Stephen support the myth of meritocracy (look how hard he veered when David brought up luck). Of course David and Stephen both work hard, but there are a ton of folks that work just as hard if not harder that *don't* make it where they are. Being in the right place at the right time, connections, family support, etc. are all extremely helpful advantages. David's humility here is really admirable.
Thank you for also noting this... just a suspicion, but I think artists, like Sedaris, tend more often to acknowledge luck than others might
I noticed and appreciated David acknowledging it and disliked Stephens reaction. Perhaps David is more aware of privilege due to his sexuality? I definitely have even more respect for David Sedaris now though.
Yes
Well observed
A modern day Will Rogers. A folk hero to me. Love the guy.
oh lord i've never really heard or read anything of this guy but im gonna....
I have to say, he has this old era voice, like he is from another century.
"She's the color of a turd" 2:48 AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I've been a big fan of David's for years......
God I love David Sedaris.
It couldn't happen to better people. HA! I totally agree.
Lol, this guy's a genius. 😂
I love his sister Amy!
