Plant person here. I hope that the trays that are attached are wide enough so that they can be cleaned. They get gross after a while. Also, I appreciate your using only one hole because when I water, I plug the hole with my finger to give the water the chance to saturate all the soil before running out. If people are having trouble with root rot it may be because the soil isn't drying out sufficiently between waterings. Love your channel!
Bloopers are hilarious! I really appreciate the tutelage. Exactly what I’ve been trying to do and so glad I ran into your video! The various angles were really helpful!
Thank you Matthew for showing us that, as a houseplant lover I think it would be better with two drainage holes either side, as you don’t want water sitting on one side coursing possible root rot 😁
I’m not a plant person so you probably know better, I just figured that regular planters have one hole in the bottom middle. That’s why I only did one.
This was very helpful. I really liked that you used your finger instead of a tool. You have a good manner, too - very easy to listen to. I usually turn off the sound but not for your video.
Thanks for sharing! I liked the way you bumped the rim and then just grabbed it to bring it back......I usually have to sit there for about a minute, watch the wobble and contemplate life when that happens. :)
Thank you for sharing this. I been wanting to do a planter with attached tray but just could not figure how to do it. Again this helps a lot. Thank you, thank you.👏👏
Wow, that is such a beautiful pot and technique! I have wanted to learn to do this and have made pots with separate trays. This will save time and will be fun. You are such a good teacher!
Wow.. I love pottery and this is the first video of yours that I have watched but it was beautiful. I loved your pottery and this was really inspiring. The bloopers were really funny. Liked and Subscribed🌹👏
I've tried throwing these in the past, with mixed success. This video helped a lot, just made two that I'm pretty happy with compared to previous attempts. Easier than some other ways I've seen posted and with a better outcome. Thanks!
You’re a great Potter and teacher! This really helped me for my planters today, and I like your creativity with the tools and techniques. Definitely subbing to this channel
Thanks for the informative content. Learning here and making mud pies and wall splatter art so far but loving every minute of it. Hopefully get some pots and planters off the wheel myself... Eventually. 👌
I'm soaking up vids like yours, getting ready to start throwing soon. Just got my wheel and going to make some bats and make some pots/trays like what you're making here. On a side note, if you want to diversify your career, you could be a Tim Blake stunt double. Buster Scruggs 2 !😆
Great video, many thanks I've made a couple of planters using a similar technique. I really like the idea of using your finger for the hole, I used a hole making tool and found it difficult to get the holes where I wanted them to come out on the inside because you can't feel like you can with your finger, so I'm going with that next time. When making mine I learned, the hard way, that it's really important to have the base of the bowl either a bit higher than or the same height as the saucer and have the holes inline with that too, otherwise the plant roots sit in water, rot and your plant dies. Hope this tip helps someone having a go for the first time
Well-timed video! I just threw 2 planters today using two different approaches - 1 of which mirrored your demo. I think this is the better method. Thank you so much for sharing.
This is so great! I have been making the whole planter and then putting the hole in when it's leather hard, but your way looks so much better. I can't wait to get back into the studio and give it a try!
Thanks your stuff is beautiful and you’re quite funny. Question when you open your planter do you go down to where you pressed in for the tray or a little deeper.
I just had to stop 3 seconds in and comment on the quality of your video. My goodness it's incredible! Do you mind sharing what kind of camera you use?
I have been struggling at making planter with saucer attached. I really liked your method and I tried today and it worked well. Is there a general rule how high (1/2”?) do you leave the clay disk? And also how far should we push in (1”)?
Definitely an awesome idea and going to try it :). I’ve been told both ways to make the planter as you would make a bowl (curved bottom) and also like a cyclinder where it has the 90 degree from the clay bottom and clay wall. Does it matter or do you use the cylinder method since you pull the walls (or lol do you do the same pull for both).
I’ve never heard that one would be better than the other for planters. It would be hard to do the rounded bottom and get all the clay out because if the tray is attached you couldn’t trim the piece.
Well you made me feel better because I think the same thing. I did try your style in the video today and it turned out amazing. (Never thought about doing the indentation at the bottom first. Great technique, which I had a few others asking me how I did that. I’d post a pic of it but no idea how to on this. But love your techniques.
Matthew can you share what type of clay you generally use for planters and bowls? I learned on porcelain and am doing okay with it but it sometimes gets too wet and it flops on me. Just looking for alternative clays
Thank you so much for this very informative video! I really enjoyed how you talked through and showed the process in real time. New subscriber right here - and I am off to check out your Instagram & Facebook too!

Love your channel!
You're master. Thank you for your channel. This isn't Hollywood. Mistakes are acceptable.
Thanks for this video. I couldn't work out how to do it before I saw this.
My succulents have had babies...I need to make a bunch of these! Thank you!!!!!!
As always thank you. So enjoying my mug
Bloopers are hilarious! I really appreciate the tutelage. Exactly what I’ve been trying to do and so glad I ran into your video! The various angles were really helpful!
Wow! You made that look so easy!!! Great video.
So helpful! Actually the best demo on throwing a planter with a tray attached.
Great! Love your videos!
Thanks for showing how to make these planters. You make it look so easy, know its not. Most of all, thanks for measuring, it is helpful beyond belief.
You’re very welcome!
The overhead shots were amazing!!
Many thanks for the video. I've been wanting to learn how to make these planters. Now, I can give it a try!
Fun to see how another potter makes an attached bowl. Excellent and much easier than my way.😊 I think I have a new way! Thank you.
Thanks for the tips and taking the extra time for the inside view on the larger pot.
So talented. I will buy one of your pots one day when I have the extra money.
I just spoke with a friend of mine, and she too said the same thing about the root rot problem.
Thank you so much! I’m going to give it a try tonight! Very well explained! Loved the bloopers too.
You are so talented. Please keep making videos.
This was very helpful. I really liked that you used your finger instead of a tool. You have a good manner, too - very easy to listen to. I usually turn off the sound but not for your video.
No special tool for the hole - saves time 👍🏼 great interior view
Thank you Matt and may God richly bless you.
Thanks for sharing! I liked the way you bumped the rim and then just grabbed it to bring it back......I usually have to sit there for about a minute, watch the wobble and contemplate life when that happens. :)
i know it is kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good website to stream newly released movies online ?
@Eugene Sincere flixportal :)
@Emilio Zahir thank you, I went there and it seems like a nice service :D I really appreciate it !
@Eugene Sincere glad I could help xD
I saw this video today, then tried it this afternoon. Not great, but it the first time trying it. Thank you Matthew for the inspiration!!
I rather my tray separate but it’s still fun to watch you make them.
Very helpful video! I'm trying to learn how to throw planters!
Liked your video as with all of them. Thank you for sharing your talent with all of us!
Liked watching these planters 😊🇬🇧❤️
I've made these before but your tutelage helps quite a bit. Can't wait to make somemore!
Thank you for this video! I am blown away by the quality of your instruction and ability!
great instruction and camera angles!
All righty!! Nice planters.
You like that. 😂
I do like that, really look good with rutile and salt!! Hope to fire the gas kiln soon and get some pots to seagrove. I'll try and stop by.
Let me know if you’re in town.
my fellow student told me about this and made some at class; I want to try too! Thank you for your clear instruction!
Awesome! Good luck
@@MatthewKellyPottery thank you! it worked (within my in-expertise, lol)!
Thanks Matthew, your techniques will make it easier for throwing the planter.
So helpful! I’ve fumbled thru attached trays - I’ll try this!
I thank you for the very informative vid! Your tips really will help me throw my next pot with tray!
TY!!! I am really excited to try this out. You made the technique very easy to see and understand.
Thank you for the great instruction!
I just watched this video again and gained even more knowledge. Thank you and I'm going to try this today.
Getting ready to start making these. Really liked the way you pushed in to make tray and pot.
Good luck. Hope the video helps. The holes can be made a little easier with a metal hole tool which is what I did most recently
Thank you for sharing this. I been wanting to do a planter with attached tray but just could not figure how to do it. Again this helps a lot. Thank you, thank you.👏👏

Loved video…
Awesome video!! Thank you for making it🙂
Thanks for giving the size info. That is really helpful.
Your videos are always great and including the bloopers makes me appreciate how much work goes into making them even more
Liked your way of putting the drain hole in. Also love the bloopers. Shows your not perfect like the rest of us
Great instructional video. Thanks for giving the amount of clay and pot measurements. Helps to have guides.
That’s all thanks to a viewer who suggested that would be helpful. I’ll be doing some more basics videos of bowls and mugs soon.
thank you so much for this and all the other great content you share. I love your work and always learn a ton.
This has helped me. I was thinking along these lines, but made several mistakes. Can't wait to try it. Mary
So helpful, thanks.
You’re welcome!
That was awesome, love your work.
Thank you for the detailed lesson
Very clear instructions. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing
Thanks Matt, I have made these before and it does take practice to get it right :)
Loved watching that, thanks!

Very good video as usual. You really go the extra mile to explain things.
handsome and no attitudes super cool vid. learned allot
Another great idea

So cool!!!!
So helpful! Thank you!!!
Great information and I will use it,
Very clear. Thanks!
thanks you! love your content, really helpful ❤
Great help to take to me to get next level
Thanks for the informative content. Learning here and making mud pies and wall splatter art so far but loving every minute of it. Hopefully get some pots and planters off the wheel myself... Eventually. 👌
Thank you for this.
Very helpful!
Matthew, ever thought about making a birdbath? Say two piece pedestal and separate bowl. Very timely with Spring around the corner.
Yes I made one in my last wood firing. I don’t think I ever showed it off. I’ll post about it soon on my IG and FB if you follow me there.
I'm soaking up vids like yours, getting ready to start throwing soon. Just got my wheel and going to make some bats and make some pots/trays like what you're making here. On a side note, if you want to diversify your career, you could be a Tim Blake stunt double. Buster Scruggs 2 !😆

Matthew....have you been sitting on your wheel again ? Love the outtakes.
Thanks your stuff is beautiful and you’re quite funny. Question when you open your planter do you go down to where you pressed in for the tray or a little deeper.
Do you glaze the whole pot to ensure moisture doesn't sit under the pot?
I just had to stop 3 seconds in and comment on the quality of your video. My goodness it's incredible! Do you mind sharing what kind of camera you use?
Cool cool cool

Do you trim the pot or tray at all? Do you make the bottom thicker than a bowl or plate to account for being used outside?
Thank you so much for this very informative video! I really enjoyed how you talked through and showed the process in real time. New subscriber right here - and I am off to check out your Instagram & Facebook too!
❤
I MUST TRY THIS...WHAT KIND OF SPONGE DO YOU USE ?
Wood fired pottery is MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't really like pottery that is bright and colorful.
I always get a big old S crack in mine. Evidently I'm too thick at the bottom. Keep practicing
At-t-t-t-t-ttached :'D
how do you trim it?
Is there a reason why you open only one hole for drainage instead of two? Thank you. 🙂
I think it would be better to have two.
Don't do it. They are awful for plants. Too hard to water correctly.
