  • What's better hiking boots or hiking shoes?
I hiked with a boot on one foot and a shoe on the other foot to find out. Watch until the end to find out what's best... I think the results might surprise you.

Terrific! I like shoes and boots, but mostly depends on the terrain I will be hiking.

I totally agree with you. People tend to think in terms of absolutes when it comes to outdoor adventure but like you said, putting thought into the terrain etc is important!

Next you should review day packs! I have never seen the one you’re using. I use a waist pack Osprey but it would be nice to know other choices

I second this idea! I have several day packs, but they always seem to be "too much" for what I'm doing.

Haha... that rock at the top of your climb that you climbed into and laid back in I call the "King's Seat". I drag any and all hiking family and friends that have visited me here in Laramie over the years up to the King's Seat where they are "forced" to climb into the seat and get an obligatory picture taken! LOL Traditions!... they're the best! 🤣

The King's Seat! I love it. I was wondering if it had a name besides "Toilet Rock" which is what my kids call it. They've never actually used toilet rock (thank goodness).

Thanks. I'm 67 going on four days of 10 miles hikes with other "older" women in September. One has a very large big toe bunion on one foot. I have plantar fasciitis on one foot which I am babying and massaging and stretching. I think I inflamed it last winter walking 10 miles in boots, but I already had it. The running shoes are cushier than boots so I am leaning towards those. My friend with the bunion is also thinking running shoes. I know it is very personal, but might you have any suggestions or opinions? Thank you.

I would just recommend trying on as many shoes and boots as possible and going with whatever feels best. I wish I had a good recommendation for you.

@@HikeLikeAWoman Thank you. The foot with plantar faciitis likes La Sportiva walking shoes much better than my Brooks Ghost running shoes. And taping with Rock Tape along the tendon from the arch, up the heel, Achilles and up the calf a bit helps a lot! It has been too hot to compare my hiking boots, but I will when I can.

My concern is that some of the trails here (Southern California) are sandy &/or rocky and I feel that I'm going to slip and fall. Any suggestions? On flat sandy paths, the shoes are ok and even my boots are just above my ankle but it's the soles that don't feel safe!. Thanks, Liz Neff

Oh I like this - sand and rocks really make the footwear choice important. Have you tried an approach shoe? The LaSportiva TX3 is super grippy on rock.

@@HikeLikeAWoman No, I'll look into that - thank you.
