    1. Trail Runners are a shoe used by people who run/jog on trails.
    2. Hiking shoes are used by people who walk a trail.
    3. Hiking boots are used to walk an arduous trail or off-trail.
    - Synthetic hiking shoes/boots are best suited for summer months.
    - Leather hiking boots are best suited for spring/autumn and winter months when it’s more wet, sloshy, muddy and cold.
    - GORE-TEX is best suited for winter months.
    - Moisture in your shoes/boots is best controlled with socks.
    At the end of the day, you can wear whatever you damn well please to hike, as long as you’re willing to accept the consequences.

    Great advice Amanda! I’ve been sticking to trail runners for most everything now. I struggled with Gore Tex vs no Gore Tex and I actually choose non Gore Tex with a quick drying sock for just about everything now. Even when I get my feet wet they dry really fast! Great video!

      I think trail runners are becoming more and more popular these days and the quick drying sock is a great combo with them! Thanks for sharing!

      What would you consider a quick drying sock please

    • @AdventuringWithNala
      @AdventuringWithNala 2 года назад +3

      @@susanweber6861 really any sick that is made for trail running. Lightweight socks will dry faster since they hold less water. Many brands like Stance or Smartwool etc make lightweight socks. Those will dry the quickest!

    I'd love to see more imagery as you are talking, I find it helps me retain more information because I feel more visually stimulated. I love what you are doing and it was refreshing to have a video with an actual woman versus all first suggested videos on RUclips with men talking or computer voiced. I wish you all the best and that you also can be amoung them. As I had to search specifically for a female speaker and as female myself, I found your suggestion more relatable.

    Hello Amanda, great topic. You hit it on the mark with this video. Season, weather, terrain, and personal preferences all need to be considered when choosing foot ware. I believe there is just two main factors:
    a.) Are you an extreme hiker on extreme terrain, where you find yourself exhausted and stumbling? Get boots.
    b.) Do you hike easy trails and quit early with energy to spare? Get shoes.
    The other question is goretex or not:
    a.) Are you doing high mileage and ultralighting with only 2 socks in your pack? Get goretex. The fine dust collecting in your all day socks will kill your skin.
    b.) Are you switching socks during long hike? No gore tex. Also, short hikers(less than 4 hrs)

    I wore a pair of Adidas trail running shoes to do 90 miles of the Pacific Coast Trail up to Mt. Whitney and back down, so I have a love of trail running shoes as my hikers....even with a heavy backpack on. I wear hiking books now, because I am older and feel like I get a bit more ankle support, mainly for the steeper down hill sections, but I still love my running shoes for going up and down the hills on my property and for shorter hikes.

    At first I thought from the thumbnail you were going to recommend heavy hiking boots haha! Nice choices. I’m an avid cross country hiker and backpacker and have those exact shoes (both minimal wide toe box zero drop trail runners and the Vivos) and love them both after tons of trail miles and many trips. Great recommendations! Bedrocks are next on my list to try as well.

    In the UK it's mainly sub tropical which sounds funny, UK tropical?. Most of the year it is warm or very humid and very wet. We wear boots most of the year because of wet ground, with this comes wet or damp feet so many hikers have foot issues i.e. Athletes foot or some kind of foot fungi. So trail runners are not so popular in the UK.

    Thanks for the review and information. I think durable hiking boots are also a good idea when carrying a heavy pack. Less likely to roll an ankle. I also find the ankle support of hiking boots helpful when descending a 14'er. This puts a lot of stress on ankles. But hey, I've seen people running up mountain trails in sandals. Not for me. :-)

    Love this new content! I wear trail runners/zero drop & want to make the full transition to minimalist shoes. Have you tried any other brands? I love my Zero Shoes trail sandals for camp shoes. Do these Magna's run true to size or more smaller? I have been wanting a pair and found some online. It's hard for me to size up since I wear an 11 and most womens stop at 10-11. If you find any other options, I would love to consider them. I was planning on going to UT but with the heat, decided to wait until fall maybe. Can't wait to see your adventures this summer! I am going to send you an e-mail as well. Take care lady!

      I haven't really tried any other barefoot brands that are similar. As far as sizing goes, I usually wear anywhere between a 9-11 depending on the shoe and I have the Magna shoes in a 9. I have the Tracker boot in a size 11 since I usually wear them with a slightly thicker sock. Unfortunately, I've found the Vivobarefoot shoe sizing to be a little inconsistent between shoe styles. Utah in the fall is awesome! I'll be on the lookout for the email!

      I'm not sure. I would ask a podiatrist before trying them.

    • @ChaseMountains
      @ChaseMountains 4 года назад

      Hey Caroline, if you have flat feet because (fallen arches) you can explore strengthening both the planta fascia itself as well as the glute medius (outside of your butt) that aids in raising arches and building a stronger more durable foot. Without that, I wouldn't recommend barefoot shoes. As Amanda said it might be a good idea to see a podiatrist but be aware that foot inserts and supportive inner soles are basically a band aid solution to the (potentially) underlying problem. A good podiatrist will asses your hip/core and leg strength imbalances first before blanketly recommending custom inserts that can be profoundly expensive and only postpone the real problem 😒

    Amanda you’re so inspiring and helpful! I’m 32 and just started hiking 3 years ago. I fell in love with it but feel like I’m a bit behind learning all the things.
    It’s so disappointing that Vivo would stop making what seems like a perfect hiking shoe. Do they make anything comparable right now? I’m in need of a new pair. My Merrell Trail Glove 4 pair has been great for a couple years but they’re falling apart.
    I just got Luna sandals and I absolutely love them. Great for creek crossing and hiking and every day use. They seem similar to your sandals.
    As much as I love wearing these barefoot styles, my feet get sore around mile 7-8 so I haven’t hiked more than 9-10 miles in a day. Is this normal? Will my feet adjust?

    • @amanda.outside
      @amanda.outside  4 года назад +1

      Based on my experience with the barefoot shoes, I would say it's pretty normal. My feet used to get tired and it took about 3-4 months to really get adjusted to the barefoot style shoes. Now that I've been using them for years, and I can go for long backpacking trips without any issues. So happy to hear that you love hiking!! It's never too late to get started, and trust me, I've been hiking and backpacking for years and I'm still learning new things! 😁

What's next ,, a board with nails or a hot bed of coals ?? ...lol... not judging... It appears that you like a modified moccasin ,, not really unreasonable at all...I don't think most people put much thought or time into the process ,, I know I don't...but barefoot ?? ...not for me....
    ..I have been on trails and in the high backcountry for many years and still don't understand why many hikers buy extremely expensive hiking footwear and do water crossings in them.... and not use a separate water shoe/sandal that could double as a camp shoe...the needed drying time or hiking with wet feet doesn't make sense to me ,, not to mention the premature failure and damage to good boots...I guess times have changed ,, with the throw. away mentality or easy money... Thank You for your thoughts well stated .....and always stay safe....

    Hiking boots are definitely not waterproof. Careful. They tend to keep moisture trapped in
