Simple Band-saw Fence

  • NO SPOILERS! Why ruin it for everyone else?
    Like the Grandpa on "The Princess Bride" said:
    "Yes, you're very smart. Shut up."
    I'm pleased with this design, and I hope that you will be as well. It really is not all that necessary to have a big fancy fence for the band-saw, because let's face it: band-saw cuts are not exactly finish quality. For this reason, I made it super simple and lightweight. My #1 priority was to be able to move it around quickly, so long that it locked reasonably square. For those rare occasions where an extra tall or super-extremely square fence will be necessary, I will likely just clamp a straight-edge in place. But for general use, this thing has become my go-to attachment. Thanks for watching and reading, and remember: don't drink and band-saw without chainmail.

    I have to thank you for this simple and easy to make fence. I have seen dozens of videos, but the more complicate those *fences, the more chance of doing something wrong or not accurate, and that is a frustrating as using to original jig of my bandsaw.*
    I finished making your design in a couple of hours today, it works great, fast and accurate, so I had to come back to your video and say: thank you so much.

    Thanks for the idea! I have an older Delta 10" band saw and they never made a fence for it. I have quite a few pieces of that oak flooring laying around and bought the clamps on Amazon. Hopefully it works for me. Only difference is, my table has a slight bevel on the outside edge, compared to the irregular shape you had. I think the clamps will adjust nicely to fit snug. Once again, thanks. You at least gave me a direction!

    Around here, we have this big box store that sells cheap junk tools, "Harbor Freight." You know, the kind of tools that look great at first, until you look up close. The toggle came from there, but it is actually pretty rugged. They make both a horizontal and vertical version of it. I think I had originally purchased these for that 3D star-making jig.

      +Steve Staples Great. I'm glad this was useful. Mine has lasted three years now, and no problems.
      One tip, though: When I'm done using it, I always put it away so that the rubber doesn't start to permanently flatten. I made a shelf for it on the back side of the saw.

    Yes, the second part. I just try to use two hands- a gentle push, and it seems to "settle" into square. For most band-saw operations, it really isn't that critical anyhow. I can normally tell right away if something isn't going right. Oh, and thanks for coming back! I do have a few more on deck.

    Love the simplicity of the fence, will build one rather than pay 100 plus for one that will take forever to square seven ways to Sunday. I will add a tape to allow getting close with the fence, kind of like on my table saw.

    Yes, it locks square. The longer you make the non-locking end's "square," (the piece of wood that hugs the deck), the more square it would become. I would not recommend using on a table saw without first upgrading to a bigger clamp. This clamp works well because of the small length of the fence. It was intentionally light-duty.

    I think it's the way the letters are arranged. I kept making the first two letters "no", then trying to make a word by adding the last 3 letters in different iterations to the end. That is strange though, how such a seemingly simple word scramble can be so difficult!

    That's a brilliant idea! I've always done the same thing on my table saw...two quick release clamps and a straight piece of wood. It's annoying at best, but my table saw itself is quite old, and set into a custom table so I have a surface of 8' x 4'. You can imagine that finding a fence would be a challenge. The toggle clamp you used, where would I find one of those? I checked my local hardware stores, and they have no clue what it even is, even after showing them your video...I'm not sure if this is indicating that it's a rather rare piece of hardware, or that the people who work there are stupid (I suspect a bit of both).
    Awesome videos, I've gleaned some great ideas from you. If you're ever up in Canada, you're welcome to come hang out in my shop ;)

    It's cool, it's just human nature. I probably would have done it on first impulse, too. I figured it out... this is how it works! Stupid tricks like this work well on some people, and others see the solution right away.

    Excellent videos! I believe we have the same bandsaw. Would you please expound on your bandsaw insert and it's construction, please. Thanks!

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  10 лет назад +1

      Sure. It is just a circular piece of hardwood. First, straight-bit rout a circular channel into a piece of wood. The inside diameter of this circular rout should be a close fit to the cavity. We are working upside down, so the depth of this rout should leave enough material remaining so that what remains can be turned into a "lip" that keeps it from falling into the cavity. Next, sand this lip down until it is a perfect fit for the hole. Once it fits, replace the blade and cut right into the insert until it falls into place. To get this new insert _perfectly_ flush, use a utility knife razor as a scraper to remove what sticks up.

    • @ScottKershawRX
      @ScottKershawRX 10 лет назад +1

      Thank you very much. Your description is really helpful. I am a bit intimidated by routing such a small piece. I have yet to try it but I will give it a go.
      I want you to know that I am very appreciative of your excellent videos. Your videos make me want to stretch my brain. I needed to pull out an old geometry book after watching the star video. Please keep the great content coming!!
      I also have quite a few more questions. I am a novice and my woodworking skill set is quite limited. However, I am not sure that the RUclips comment section is the best arena for my curiosity. That is mostly due to my ignorance as a newbie. Would you be willing to entertain some questions through another mode of communication (perhaps email)? If so, I can share my contact info with you.

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  10 лет назад +3

      Scott Kershaw You do not have to rout a small piece. Instead, you rout the circle on a much larger piece that you can keep clamped down. The rout does not go all the way through, but what remains is only 1/8" thick, so it can be removed from the board with just a coping saw when you are done routing.
      As far as conversation goes, you can send me private messages via youtube; you don't have to send me contact info. However, I would ask that you leave it in the comments section whenever possible, especially if it directly relates to the featured project, so that others may benefit.
      You are not the only n00b out there. It has been my experience that most people have questions, but act as though they do not in order to preserve self-confidence. All of these know-it-alls on the internet- why are they watching how-to videos? In real life, I _constantly_ ask questions. Most people must think that I am a complete idiot. Let them.
