The NRA lost its way many years ago. They’ve failed to truly advocate for the membership for years which has cost us rights and freedoms in the process. Chris Cox tried to sound the alarm and he was run off by the good old boys club.
I’ve been a life member since 1993, and was an annual member for years before that. Clearly GOA and some others have been doing all of the heavy hitting in the vacuum left by the NRA. The NRA needs to be completely restructured, leadership changed, and return to grassroots efforts to unapologetically fight for 2A rights, full stop.

Which is why you have to always have in mind what your trying to accomplish and be ready to jump ship on any large organization the second it starts to become more about the organization than the goals of the organization. In the long run this will happen to all organizations. Then it’s time to start over with a new smaller organization.

All I know is I used to go to the Range 1-2X week a few years ago when my Gun Club had excellent NRA instruction to new members. I let my membership lapse after seeing ridiculous and unsafe gun handling on a regular basis. Why? After a local Cop shot himself (I wish I was making this up) at the range, he then sued the club for not having "the appropriate signage", thus causing membrrship rates to triple. Why? Because the Club then had to carry Liability Insurance. The NRA was nowhere to be seen, following this incident, but, GOAL was.

If they were fixed, they would send an apology letter to every member and former member, as well as free membership for a year or more. And hey maybe actually doing something in the gun control fight would be nice.

Every time I walk into a gun show there is an NRA booth with some guy asking people to join. I tell them that their organization endorsed John Insane war-loving McCain when the REAL gun-rights advocate (Ron Paul) was still at the height of his campaign and that they forever lost my support when they did that. Done.

It's sad to see what has happened with the NRA. I'm an annual member for many years, mostly because my gun range requires it. I have joined other gun rights org's only to have my mail box filled with letters begging for more money. Everyone thinks their org is doing a better job. I had to tell the NRA and my state org to stop sending letters begging for more money. My yearly dues should be enough.

Here in Idaho, the state NRA affiliate does nothing for the 2A community. Happily we do have a politically active group and have made strides to maintain and protect our rights. I've let my NRA membership lapse. Will take a real change for me to ever join again.
I do belong to my local organization as well as fpc, goa, and 2af. I contribute to all of them on a regular basis. I urge others to do the same.

The NRA needs to come up with a way to compartmentalize, isolate and prioritize their Training Department and National Firearms Museum from the political side of things, as these two things are (currently) the best part of the organization.

Eric, you truly are a voice of reason amid the chaos. I appreciate that, but the NRA is going to have to make massive changes before I and, (I'm guessing) more than a few thousand others will trust them again.

Wayne LaPierre is the poster boy for Pournelle’s Iron Law of Bureaucracy. Like Stalin, those who master the internal politics of a bureaucracy tend to run it to the detriment of the purported purpose of the group.

Unlike Letitia “Tish” James, I believe owning a firearm is a civic duty. Living in a liberal gun-hating state called Maryland, I have joined and supported multiple organizations which I hope will help maintain liberty. But liberty in the tiny state of Maryland is disappearing, just like the demise of the NRA's leadership team, nothing lasts forever. Thomas Jefferson realized the same . His quote "When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty." reminds us the revolution he fought has not ended. Join the fight, it is for good cause - life , liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I would come back if they get back to the core principles and mission they had back in the 1970s up to the early 1990s when Wayne came in and they started clearing out the people who were for the mission not self fulfillment. They did good work way back when but there will have to be protections in place to prevent an repeated outcome.
The training and matches and all they did in the past has no other group or organization nationally to fill the void. Hope they can comeback to the core mission they once had.

I left the NRA about 20 years ago, just after Charlton Heston stepped down as President. I did not trust the people I saw taking control then, and it turns out I was right to distrust them. I suppose it would be best if the NRA could be brought back to its stated purpose of supporting firearms owners in the USA but if it goes belly up and dies I won't shed any tears. Thank God there are other organizations such as the GOA which have stepped in to try and fill the void created by LaPierre and his cronies.
