    For me, Dalmore has one characteristic that I like (and don't find in so many other whiskies) and that is a prominent nutty aroma and flavor in addition to chocolate and berries. It's shame they are so stingy on Abv and fail on keeping to natural color and non-chill filtering. The Cigar Malt beats out the 12, 15, and 18 in my opinion.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад +4

      I haven't tried the 18, but for me it's an easy win over the 12 and 15. The Port and the Sherry Cask Select are also nice whiskies, but Dalmore is still very much a hit-or-miss distillery for me. Cheers Alan.

    Hello Jeff, I have been enjoying your multiple reviews lately. Very informative & full of facts a whisk(e)y drinker would want to know. We all have different taste, I wouldn’t worry that someone thinks you’ve rated a whisky higher than they would have. I personally think your rating was on target. I bought a bottle a few years ago on sale, loved it, so I went back & bought a few more. I scored it an 88 overall with a 89 on the plate. I paid about $120 after tax, It’s a good pour for about $150.00 US.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад +2

    I dont mind if the dram is craft presented or not. If it's good, it's good, period.
    Some whiskies are absolut bangers even in 40% ABV. Sometimes you just need to pour a dram and relax... Btw, great review as always!!!

    This was my first bottle of Dalmore. I have heard all the bad reviews, but people seemed to think the Cigar Malt was the best one, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try. The nose and palate weren’t bad, but the finish really ruined the whole experience. The flavor faded fast, and I was left with a VERY bitter, tannic aftertaste. I suppose it could be due to too much oak influence, but since that’s typically not a problem with Scotch, my first instinct is that it’s due to excessive use of e-150.

    We kinda discussed my thoughts on Dalmore in an earlier comment on a Dalmore (notice how I avoid the w-word, as there is too little of that in this e150a).

    It is kind of weird to think that someone would give a thumb down, Just because they don't agree with your opinion. But i know that is true and sad. As far as the whisky is concerned i was dissapointed with the regular 12 year old, so i kind of look down Dalmore. But this review makes me curious and makes me want to comeback to this label. Cheers!!! 🥃

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад

      Hah it was like 3 thumbs down, which is nothing. But there was some (civilized) backlash in the comments of people expressing their disapproval. I understand that, and I understand the drive to encourage craft-produced whiskies. It's very important to a lot of people. It's important to me too. But if I like something I'm going to share it with you, even if the whisky isn't craft.
      This is nothing like the regular 12 year old. Much better imo. Worth trying if the price is reasonable. I got it for a decent price in my market, but from what I've seen online and read in the comments here, this is often way more expensive than it should be.

    Hey Geoff, love your honesty. Most people who knock Dalmore out, tried the 12 and maybe the 15.

      @@pedrohcmenezesI also got a very bitter, tannic aftertaste from the Cigar Malt that really ruined the whole experience. It could be too much European oak influence, but since this really isn’t a problem for other Scotch whiskies of similar age, my guess is that it may have to do with too much added e-150.

  • @yoursinsincerely39
    @yoursinsincerely39 2 года назад +1

    Excellent review Geoff! This is a whisky a lot of self proclaimed Dalmore haters love in secret. Ultimately it all boils down to value. It is 150-160$ here. I can get a Springbank 12 CS and a Springbank 15 for that price as well. It is quite sad because this does show the ability of Dalmore to produce delicious whisky. Their insistence in branding themselves as a super premium brand is obnoxious. Not to mention some promotional videos I have seen that made me cringe.
    I have seen their better tasting whiskies all have extremely complicated cask compositions. The Cigar Malt and the King Alexander III (350$) all have suspiciously complicated maturation processes.
    Yeah, I had purchased a bottle a few years ago. Not going to buy again. I still have some left. I enjoy an occasional dram from time to time. The cigar malt is a total gimmick though. I think most sherry matured whiskies would pair well with a cigar. I quit smoking about 8 years ago, but I do remember enjoying cigars with sherry monsters back in the day.
    Cheers!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 года назад +2

      I'll agree that the value for this one is pretty bad in most markets. I paid roughly half of that price. It's about USD $80, which is MUCH more agreeable. Happy to pay that price-in fact it's a steal! But yeah, $150 is too much.
      You're right about the cask play. They seem to play around with casks more than any other brand I know. Funny because the base distillate is quite nice itself, but they really do make these elaborate cask "concoctions" work. Tbh, I'm a fan of the brand despite the silly colourant and over-the-top pricing. A lot of fluff, but there's good stuff in there. Cheers!

    Dalmore is the epitome of wasted potential. I've had the 12 and 15 in bars, and I felt... disappointed. Not with the whisky itself, I loved some of the creme brulee and nutty notes. But the oft-maligned presentation of it. I just wanted more from the whisky. Then I see something like the Port Wood Reserve (which seems to be aged for 16-ish years total) at 46.5% and I think "why can't they give us this level of richness more often?". I may have to look more at Dalmore IBs.

    Definitely the best Dalmore I have tasted. I do have a problem with calling this a banger. The only problem, and as you already stated, is it's weak. The taste is great but you really have to look for it and it fades quickly in the finish. A banger is something that really hits you. This is not it. Do not even dare to drink this after you've had other whiskies, especially if they are stronger.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  3 года назад +1

      I've had this in a session and still enjoyed it, but yes it's definitely too weak. Some whiskies can work with a 43%/44% abv, and I do think this is one of them. But the finish would definitely be improved with a bump in abv. Odd choice for them to land on 44%. 2% off...

    • @manualboyca
      @manualboyca 2 года назад

      Agreed - I like this whiskey a lot….but I’d LOVE this whiskey if they bumped up the abv to at least 50%. I’m a cigar smoker, and the higher abv whiskeys always pair better with a cigar.

      Damn, sorry to hear you don't like this one. One of my favourite go-to's in my collection at the moment. But Dalmore is always a controversial one, and for me this one has some heavy leather/tobacco notes that won't be for everyone.
      Solists are single cask, so you never really have the same experience twice. I've got one open at the moment that I'm not loving, while others I've tried have been some of the best bourbon-matured whiskies I've had.
      I don't know much about bourbon to be honest. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan. That being said, I actually like the regular Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, so I'm sure the Coy Hill is a banger! 🥃
