One tip from a woodworker -- those joints and brad nails won't have much stay-together power because they're going into the ends of the short pieces. Be sure to add wood glue prior to nailing, and that should help this last.

Big box stores will cut wood for you. Drill works just as well. If you're going to DIY you should invest in a drill. If you can't get one or borrow one, a hammer and nail will work. As someone else stated, good idea to glue too. Black Friday and holidays good time to get good deals on power tools, especially the packages of multiple tools. Make sure you can grip and lift them easily. Some are more friendly for women's hands. Also auctions are a great place to find deals, find an auction that deals with a lot of estates and downsizing. Make sure you can try them out, and if possible bring someone who knows what to look for if you don't. Good luck.

    1. Cut off the orange painted end first so you have a smooth end and don’t need to cover it with filler
    2. Use wood glue to reinforce the joints. Nailing into end grain is just asking for it to slip out. Put a skim coat of glue on the end grain, let it dry, then glue the pieces together like normal. The thin dried glue layer will fill some of the end grain pores and result in a better joint.
    3. Use a pre-stain conditioner before applying stain. It’ll take out some of those splotches you see all over her finished product. Especially true with pine.
    4. Secure to the wall with anchors (2 on top, 2 on bottom) since this is too narrow to reach 2 studs.

    • @hollowhorned6852

If they are only 24" long you would need 1 2x2x8 cause you would only need 82". I don't think 24" is long enough. I would make them 30" long and it would come out to 94" so 1 8' piece would be enough. Thank you for mentioning the 2x2. I thought it was 1x1. 🤦‍♀️

I’m hesitating after reading so many negative comments but here goes. For a beginner, a drill is a great first tool. Drill a 1/4” hole thru the joint. Then apply glue to the joint and a dowel rod. It will give you a stronger joint. After sanding everything smooth and flush, apply a stain pre-conditioner when using soft woods like pine or spruce. It will pop the grain so give it another light sanding to smooth the surface. Now apply your stain. If you don’t do the conditioner. Then use a clear coat to seal the stain or your towels might get stained also. 😢
Otherwise, great project! Keep it up. 🎉

OH WOW!!!! THAT is something even I can do and I have lost my peripheral vision in my left eye!! 👍🏻 (My husband send this to me with a (👁️ KNOW you can do this!) Funny guy! BUt this looks FABULOUS and I love Dixie Belle (Spelling?) Stain BUT…..for me, I have been trying an odd way to do smaller wood projects like this…..It is going to sound crazy but I do not have a nail gun (YET as hubby is a bit…..”hesitant” to get me a power tool that could truly hurt him if I “missed” LOL! I promised him I would NOT MISS! Mwahahahaha!) I use a matte lacquer finish (I use a spray bottle and while it is NOT as economical it is easier for me to use and I like the finish better) and just one coat will do as long as you get everywhere and there aren’t any spots that are without or it will make the next step look “sloppy”……THEN I use a SPRAY PAINT of whatever kind in whatever color I like and then I go back and use the Matte lacquer as the finish (Sometimes I DO need to use two coats and maybe three on the small wood piece I am making depending on the color but using a matte Lacquer as a “Base Coat” was something I discovered by accident and it has really changed how some of my smaller pieces turn out! They have a real depth to them and look as if I have used 2-3 finishing coats. I sold you it would sound crazy!
NB: as for the person that said “No beginner DYI (U mean DIY?’er)has a nail gun.” And then a laugh face. Actually I know a LOT of friends that have been following a few DIY’ers on You Tube and they have saved many projects and decided that was it, they were MAKING STUFF THIS SUMMER and setting up an area in their garage for the yucky Winter Time. So….that is not fair, nor is laughing. As for myself, I do not have one (YET, and trust me, I WILL WIN THIS ONE…….) BUT what I DO have is a set of GOOD quality clamps (I figure I will use these forever no matter what I am making) a Glue Gun that I use GORILLA GLUE STICKS WITH and of course Gorilla Glue as well as E6000. I use the Hot Glue as an instant hold and depending on what I am making, the Gorilla Glue or the E6000 is the long term HOLD I need and I have not had ANYTHING fall apart even a bit or become “wobbly”. There isn’t any excuse and if you know how to drill a pilot hole (look it up) and use the right size screw for the size of wood you are crafting or creating with, you do a LOT with an electric screwdriver if you do not have the funds for an Electric Drill yet!) ANYTHING can be done and done well if you just learn different techniques to suit your skill set or your tool kit.
Friends come over all of the time and ask where I got something new they haven’t seen before and when I tell them I MADE IT, I usually have to pull out the YT Tutorial and show them (They are asking where I bought something a lot LESS and asking ME to make them one a lot MORE as of late…….hmmm……..side hustle LOL.)
Basically it is all about your creative side of your 🧠 and your attitude. MORE ‘CAN do’ and less ‘CAN’T’ with excuses and you too will have some cool looking pieces in your home that LOOK AS GOOD as the time and attention you put in it, in detail. 👍🏻

Why does everyone use a miter saw on the ground? It’s not like they’re as heavy as Thor’s hammer. Find a table people.

Na brads have no head and will fail after a while as the wood dries and shifts with humidity. That stain is not good enough. It's like a sewing needle...
