Went to Ships Hotel on family vacations! So sad it's gone!!💔
I grew up in Schellsburg..up and down ship mountain many times..baby sat in the ship..got water at the spring from Lada's candy at the curve..StoryLand was just our backdrop..Shawnee state park my back yard literally..you should have stopped by the cemetery to see the log cabin church or Colvin's covered bridge..TY for the memories..
Happy you went to my area
Cool roadside finds!
Thanks don
Truly enjoyed this. The TV in the ladies room looked just like one I bought used in 1980. The TV was a Rutherford, which was made by the Curtis-Mathis Co, but didn't have the Lifetime Guarantee. That beast was the family's TV until 2008, when the picture tube died! Loved that TV!
Nice. Thanks for sharing
Another great video!
Thank you
Those are some really good finds.
😱 I went to Story Land in the early 70s as a little kid. Wow, memories!
Amazing PA archeology!
Great job Jay one of your best.
Glad you enjoyed it
I didn't know Storybook Forest was gone. I wish you could have gone in...there is a castle in the middle.
This must have been an awesome place... thank you for sharing this with us. I love learning... what’s beautiful site..
Thanks for checking it out
Very cool vid! Merry Christmas to everyone 🎄
I really love the video👍👍😎😎
Ty laura
JP, awesome and cool video! Loved the gulf gas station and the hunting cabin. Really enjoyed your video!
Thanks
Those were an interesting assortment of roadside finds. Peering down on the hotel footings made my knees wobbly. I’m sorry I missed the premiere but I was watching A Christmas Story. 😬
My favorite Christmas movie
My thoughts: the gas station washroom floors looked like parkay tile. I had seen those types of tile floors only once in the job I had for 2 years and I was told it was parkay tile from like the 70’s or 80’s maybe. I bet if a person bought it, tore it down and rebuilt the station to today’s standards to sell gas and food products I’m sure they can make money especially if that’s a busy highway location.
As for the house that looks like someone may live there for say weeks at a time per year, hunts then leaves but also may have or one day tried to start wanting to renovate but had no time and money to do so.
The rest of the locations were interesting to and love when you provide details of the location either with pictures or words or both. Love seeing those things. My mom lived in a small town for the first 10 years of her life and so when myself, my sisters and her would go there in the 2000’s I remember telling her that when I had walked with them along the train tracks this one time, that are still there to this very day I really liked this feeling of old tracks running through a small town and the old school way of life. It also reminds me of the movie Stand By Me when the kids were walking along the tracks and the one character got his foot stuck until the last second. Of course the town had become way, way bigger by 10-20 times.
Love seeing these old roadside finds brother JP.
💙👍
cool video. commenting for algorithm
👍
I think this last building is definitely an old hunting cabin, my guess it was probably owned by an old timer that past away and his kids probably own it now and never go there. I too think the service station was my favorite. The hotel must have been a beautiful place to stay in its hay day. Awesome video Jay, I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching jason
Wow a nice 0.64 wave C.B. antenna on top of the service station. I haven't seen one in decades !
I drove back from the Pittsburgh area last night and decided to take the scenic route along Route 30. I was looking for that and couldn't remember where it was. I stopped at Mount Ararat and didn't even realize I was exactly at the place I was looking for until I got home and looked it up. We used to drive past that all the time when I was a kid.
Some very interesting random roadside finds that's for sure 👌 From the pictures, that old hotel must have been something else in it's heyday 😊
That old Gulf station 🚉 was awesome 👌 the old vise is just like the one my dad had in his shop 😊🥰
Beautiful day for a road trip and what interesting things you and your friend found 😊
Thanks again for letting us all tag along 😊 Take care and travel safe 🙏😊
Also what was once a nice little hunting cabin...a little bit of work and it could be again 😀😉 still pretty though 😉
There used to be another Ship Motel outside of Ruffsdale, PA - I believe along Rt 31.
I was in that building . My husband and I went up to the lookout. It was so neat. The restaurant that had been there was closed.
Thanks for sharing
Jim's Gulf is the makings of a great horror movie. I can name 3 ... great finds.
😲😆
We were just talking about Story Book Forest, took my son in 1983
The Ship Hotel was my favorite. I grew up about 7 miles from there. Not far from the Ship is Gravity Hill just outside of New Paris. You should check that out sometime.
What a cool vidio
Ty
Love to see these types of videos from you JP they're always great!
Thanks 👍
I grew up here
Looks intriguing Jay 👍
Missed the premier, darn it.
Great explores, roadside finds are the best finds. Thanks Jay👍✌
Great roadside finds!!! My favorite was the Ship Hotel! Interesting history! Thank you! But OMG, what you did with RJ when he lit his cigarette at the gas station 😆😆😆😆😆 I'm still giggling!!! I enjoyed this video so much, my friend. Thank you for sharing this! Stay safe guys, and see you in the next one!!! 🙋🏽♀️👍🏽🥰😄😎💙💙💙
Maybe he'll learn to quit smoking after getting all that heat lol
@@JPVideos81 😆😆😆😆😆😆 That'll do it!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
I believe my parents took me there when i was younger....yes, and my grandpap as well...i was only 5 or 6 but i still remember going there...that is so cool, thank you...im just sad to hear its closed as i had been talking about that place and taking my son there a few years ago...before we moved to Nebraska, but i guess ill just have to show him your video instead...again thank you....great memories of that place!
Glad you still have memories of the place. Always sad when they close.
Sorry I missed premiere. Visiting with my Sis haven't seen since Jan. These were incredible finds!! Ship hotel how amazing that must of been! Old gas station reminds me of one my friend owns now. Doesn't pump gas anymore is mechanic shop. Cabin was quite the mystery. The big shoe, view, just it all....Amazing!! Thanks so much Jay!!!🥰❤❣
Hope it was an enjoyable visit
I live pretty close to Bedford County, and I’ve heard of that ship hotel, but never saw it. Wish I could’ve seen it before it burned down. Nice road side finds!
I love the old black and white photos you find that shows how it used to look : )
The peach and black and green and black tile is always so cool. On a side note: don't forget to look to the sky tonight. Jupiter and Saturn will be in complete alignment, which hasn't happened in 800 years 🪐🌟
👍
Great roadside finds Jay!!! I think my favorite is the ship hotel!!! Great job on the video and beautiful pictures as always!!! Take care, stay safe and God bless you!!!
The hotel had a great view and a one of a kind look. Too bad its gone.
@@JPVideos81 yep that's for sure!!!
17:16 is definitely was a sign frame used by Gulf, pre 1960s.
That was a Pennzoil sign you were showing in the video
This was a children's amusement park in the 60s and was closed in the 70s. Storybook Forrest
😢RJ go BOOM... 🤓 That 💥 made me JUMP.
The view at the ship hotel was soooo beautiful! Would have loved to have seen it with the fog around it.
storybook place... was really cute. Would have loved to have seen what other remaining buildings/sightings may have been at there.
Thanks JP. Really great finds!
Thanks for watching
I liked the service station especially because you could get in and explore a bit. I was glad to see that RJ was ok after the explosion. LOL
Maybe he'll stop smoking now
My skin is still a lil tender. Lol.
Like to see more Random Roadside Finds.
Gidday JP that went to fast I thoroughly enjoyed this alot, the old hotel looked like quite the place to visit in its prime, the little shanty cabin loved it, I recognized the old gas station didn't realize it was so long ago in July wow this years gone fast, the old theme park was cool to see even if you couldn't find anyone to get permission to venture further in, maybe in the future :), you find the coolest things along your highways, have an amazing weekend ahead my friend.
You said it with the months and year flying by. We all hope 2021 brings more good than bad. Glad you enjoyed the adventure. Stay safe as well.
How cool would it have been to stay in that hotel!!!! Omg! In the fog you would feel like you were out in the water...just not rocking..lol. That would have been awesome. Loved the old gas station...omg brought back memories of when I was a kid. My earliest memory of gas prices was .32 cents a gallon. Momma would give me a quarter and I would buy a candy bar and a yoohoo with it. Made me feel nostalgic...lol. I can tell RJ is a fellow classic car lover...so am I. God bless loved the video.
Just hope the ship doesnt break away from the dock lol
@@JPVideos81 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I always enjoy seeing old places & unusual building, waiting to see more videos.
That second abandoned gas station with two garage door is the same that WallieB26 explored in one of his videos.
So interesting. Thanks for sharing. The old photos of the hotel are great. Little old gas stations had so much more character than modern ones.
I agree. Thanks for stopping by
Can't wait to see what you have, I'm attempting to model the grandview ship hotel in N scale. Was a child hood memory for me.
Would love to see it when finished. I grew up in Bedford. Haven't lived there for almost 40 yrs, but do go back, drive through and up the mountain. Ship Hotel was a big deal in the day.
@@robertbeining141 I'm not the best modeler, I will do my best of coarse. Subscribe that way you'll know when I post it thanks for commenting
Great video. I live right near where all ur filming took place. Especially liked jim's gulf station. Always wondered what it looked like in there. Story land in Schellsburg I went to many times as a kid. Again, great video 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting
This site along rt 30 was known as storybook forest
Amazing what we don’t even know is in our back yards, until we really look!! Great video JP!!
That sign was a Pennzoil sign
This was a really cool video I really liked it !! I really enjoy the before pictures of the Grand Ship hotel think of how many people stayed there over the years !! Shame it was registered as a historic location and it was protected better !! The old service station was really cool amazing how so many cool things were left behind !! Also the road side place with the old shoe was neat . And the old shack at the end was a neat find !! Really great video as always I really enjoyed it all !!👍👍
Its nice find unique and different places like these. Never know what you'll see next.
Hi Jay, with the garage that had the model A there were two wall signs on the back wall, one was for Genuine Ford parts and the other was for John Deere. Jay, you frightened the crap outta me for a second there when RJ said about no smoking 😂😂. That house/lodge looked pretty spooky with the dishes on the table.
Thank you for sharing, much love. xx💖
I missed the signs. Good catch
@@JPVideos81 Thanks 😉. x
I've been binge watching ur videos for over a week i really enjoy the content. the best thing ever was u fixing the our flag
Thanks for watching
Always welcome man
Very interesting roadside finds! Love the shanty cool old furniture probably a generations getaway.
Like the notion of the hotel Would have been grand to visit must have been a difficult build. What I can most relate to is the Gulf station really takes me back, I can smell the new rubber the grease and for some reason cigars. In Oregon they still have service atendents .
Central California Watching
Those smells never go away. Interesting how they instantly bring back memories.
Did you ever see the big coffee pot at the Bedford fair grounds? I go pass where ship hotel was, and years ago walked on the deck. I have many pictures of it. Its a shame it wasn't saved.
A ship definitely dry docked...on land ....not sea ....that looks like a place called storybrooke..... wow RJ 78 got blown up .... and that HUNTING cabin looks really spooky...
👍🙂
That was a beautiful hotel it’s a shame it got destroyed. Thank you for putting in the history and the pictures of what it looked like - another great video JP 😊💕
My pleasure
I believe that small out building at the ship hotel, might have been a gas station. I used to pass by the ship weekly for 4 or 5 years in the late 90's
I stated that in the video at the 6:54 mark.
Correction: at 22:56 you describe that covering as "Nature's Carpet." No, no, it's obviously "Nature's Upholstery," Jay! (Nice, even covering, too.) I gotta admit, when you shoved your camera through the window and showed the office area, I suddenly had nostalgic pangs. I spent a lot of time working in gas stations of one kind or another in my youth. Sometimes it seemed a lot of guys, just out of high school, had to serve time pumping gas---almost like having to "Fulfill Your Military Obligation" (oh yeah, we had to register for the Draft in those days). I was "Night Manager" in a full service gas station in the early '60s, working 11 to 7 all by my lonesome. When I looked at the chairs and the desk, I remembered all the lonely winter nights, when I had no customers during a heavy snowfall. It felt like I was in the middle of a snow-globe, with "Pillow Feathers" coming down like a Hollywood snow machine, so thick I couldn't see beyond the little pizza stand on the other side of the triangle plot with a WWI field piece. Anybody else have those memories? Nice tour, Jay. Stay safe, everybody.
Thanks for sharing those memories
I LOVE history no matter where it's from and I really enjoyed seeing this location.I researched and found many photos of its hay-day years and lots more on its history.....totally awesome place. I never would have known about this had you not made this video. Thank you. The opening intro with the flag is great!
So glad you enjoyed it and were able to get more info.
3 states and seven counties are available in view 😍
😲
drive back by now I live in the area I drive past at least once a month someone has cleaned up and painted Jim's gulf it looks nice now 13:52 to 1359 lol that's not Bedford County that was Meadow's intersection heading towards Plank Road Altoona Plesant Vally Blvd.
I loved your random finds. I especially like that you include links to the history. It is fascinating. I wish it could have been saved. The gas station was really cool, too. It reminded me of the small town I grew up in. 🙂
Thanks jan. History needs to be shared and preserved. Thanks for watching
As a mechanic of twenty years I really liked the old Gulf shop! I've used those old in ground lifts at other shops I've worked at. Never seen the oil drains that dump into an underground tank before though. That was pretty cool!!! Great video guys!!!👍👍👍
Great video! Never heard of the hotel. Thank you for sharing these amazing locations🤶🎅🎄🎀 Lol, RJ 🤣⛽🚬🔥🔥😂 Could be a hunting cabin, might still be in occasional use
Thanks brenda. Not sure how much longer the cabin will be standing.
@@JPVideos81 you're welcome❤🥳
That hunting place looks like it has really clean windows.
Had a strange vibe. Abandoned, but lived in...
25:09 an old Amoco oil box.
JP: check out the historic "Botel" near Picwick Landing in Hardin County, Tennessee...on the Tennessee River near Savannah, TN...similar them to this ship hotel in your video...
Not sure when ill be in Tennessee, but thanks for mentioning.
...just thought you might enjoy checking it out on-line...actually, it is probably an old river boat...pretty neat all the same!
I think my favorite roadside find was the location of the Ship Hotel....Cannot imagine how anyone was "brave" enough to decide to build off the side of the mountain like that ..It is really very sad that it was left to ruin and then burn down . Thank you for sharing all of these interesting relics of yesteryear. ...love the surprise of random roadside finds !!!
I'd be nervous that the ship would break away from the dock... haha
The shoe is from the old lady who lived in a shoe
Hey! You found the abandoned gulf gas station! I explored it back in June. Was a pretty neat little place to explore on the roadside. Glad to have done a video on it earlier this year and I’m glad to see you have stumbled upon it as well!
Cant pass up a nice little abandoned roadside find.
That ending at the gas station made me jump!
Is still able to see all from my home grounds by rifles site etc.
Thank you for fixing the flag and my favorite part was the service station, i have not seen a gulf station in some time. That hotel though wow must have been a great view while staying there. Happy Holidays and thank you for sharing.
My ocd kicked it when I saw the flag was stuck. The station was very cool. Its hard to imagine that they built the hotel on such a steep cliff side.
@@JPVideos81 very well-constructed to bad a fire destroyed it. I'm the same with my own flag as well.
On U S 30 ,near Ligonier , dude not far from me.
I wonder if the falling down block building was maybe a gas station at one time??
I did state that in the video... 6:53 mark.
In the town I grew up in in Michigan, my adoptive father who was a carpenter along with his father and brothers, custom built a brick home designed to be reminiscent of a ship. That roadside hotel brought back those memories. Good video, although don't ask me why that Gulf station simultaneously creeped me out and made me sad.
👍🤣
Wow, great video! The amusement park was called Storyland. The Story Book Forest that's now part of Idlewild is a different, but similar attraction, and like Storyland, it's along the Lincoln Highway (Rt 30). Story Book Forest is still in operation.
Loved the service station best! 👍🏻
It was a nice find
the old dealership building interests me, because I am trying to imagine how the dealership would operate alongside servicing vehicles at the service pit. Seems kind of odd to me, but I am not an expert in that field, or in building structures, so I could be wrong. If anyone knows, then, please explain how it worked together.
Pity u couldn't get closer to the shoe....there was u!! Little boy blue with his horn! X
💙😁
It was a gas station across the street
Might be fun do go down there, especially using a metal detector, might find "treasures" or at least historic memorabilia.
Possibly
Thank you for caring about the US Flag!!!
My pleasure
I love that you Americans are so patriotic! Gill 🇬🇧
How dreadfully sad that it has gone. I bet the interior was amazing, being Art Deco.
Great finds Jay and RJ...ya scared me with RJ and the ciggy blow up lolzzz
Haha. Just some clever editing
Cool road finds I liked the hunting house at the end and the blast at petrol station glad it wasn't real. Phew..
😊
Holy crap Jp, you scared me with that gas explosion.....lol
Thankfully its just clever editing
Enjoyed the history of the hotel. Its beautiful there. Thanks for the tour.
My pleasure
So are you near jonestown in pa.........?
Altoona isnt too far from jonestown. But i live on the eastern side of the state.
The energy is still there at the Old Ship Hotel area! That will never fall down or decay. I grew up in Bedford PA, just down the road a bit. Still fun to drive up there when I get back to the area. Wicked drive up that mountain. Thanks for the journey back in time.
Its a nice area. I enjoyed checking it out.
Believe it or not that could be saved. Prop border under the part that is falling down till you repair it. another year it will just be rubble.
Noah comes running to me saying mom I found him he isnt gone . We haven't seen you on for awhile we loved watching this thanks for sharing ❤❤❤❤ stay safe love ya
