Tom summed up my feelings on the rulebook. Glad that CMON provided a FAQ to clear up some questions from the gaming community which clarified some omissions. Have played a couple of times now. Hope to teach it to my game group soon.
I think in this case Munchkin's popularity is working against it. When I initially saw this game I simply dismissed it as another Munchkin game with a different box.
I'll have to check this out. I have fond memories of play lots of munchkin back in the day. I really like munchkin fu. It was always fun to play even with all the backstabbing. Thanks for this review Tom very good look at this game. The threat pool mechanic gives that press your luck part of the game which I love. I'm not so sure about the shame tokens but either way, I'll have to try this one. the miniatures look pretty good that paint job is rocking!
I first got into Munchkin with my D&D group and we enjoyed it for a while, eventually buying expansions to help add additional content, but we became disillusioned with it after a particularly long game and I realized that it often devolves into play bad cards on the leader with the winner usually ending up the person that draws a houseplant or equivalent on level 9 when everyone else is out of negative effects to play on the leader. I still enjoy the sense of humor of the game and I kind of wish that Clank! had pushed their sense of humor a bit more like Munchkin. The board game still feels pretty lucky so I'm going to pass on it, but I do hope that some day there's a game that has the send-up of genre tropes that Munchkin does so well, while being attached to a solid game too (and hopefully something that incorporates the humor into the mechanics). (Smash Up! and Castle Panic reskins didn't do it for me.)
Lol was thinking of getting this game when I saw the cool miniatures. Then you said your daughter painted them. She did a great job! Seems like you have a future game designer.
1) if you already in a room and other player spawn defeated monster there? 2) if empty room visited by one player and then second, are both getting rewards for rooms? (like 2 chests for 1st level rooms?) EVEN if they died and now visiting them again?
During the kickstarter they never posted the manual or any examples of gameplay. It almost seemed like the gameplay itself was secondary to everything else.
I like the original Munchkin and I have some of the boards for tracking levels but this doesn't seem to have much more substance than that. I get that having 3D models of some of the classic monsters is cool but they aren't so cool that I need this in my life.
My big problem with Munchkin is that it outstays it's welcome... then continues for an hour or so after that... I quite like the humour, but it got really painful waiting for someone to get that final level without someone having the ability to stop them. It soured me so much that I'm not sure I want to revisit the same humour (essentially)
The rulebook is hard to understand. Honestly I learned more from RUclips, to be perfectly honest. As for dice, my god, they could have tripled the dice number. Is the game fun? Hell yes, we really enjoyed it. but it took a few rounds to get used to it. So fun as hell? yes. One of our new family favourites.
The ratings breakdown on BGG is unusual. They normally follow a bell curve but there's a huge difference above and below the median of 7. The total votes for 6 or below don't even reach the votes for 8 only, let alone 8 or above. I guess those who don't like the Munchkin concept have avoided this game.
Starting from about half-way in this review, my mind just went: "But do you even need these miniatures? What do you use them for?" Still don't know the answer to that...
Im so mad i ever bought munchkin, it was fun a bit and we played a bit , but the games would last hours to jus end by some random stuff , at least we dont play much anymore , but sometimes my buddies wanna play and i have to dread it for 2 hours
not enough dice, corporate decision, letting backers pay a lot for this game and then seeing the player boards not being boards but simple thin cardboard of shitty quality see the curvature. sorry but CMON is just good enough for minis but everything else is just corporate greed. really dislike them more and more. why not make a quality boardgame that lasts for years and looks really high quality. only the minis they do right, nothing else they do right. ok end of rant. but i know i am not alone on this. let´s see what you have to say fellow DT community.
Unfortunately I sort of agree. I only get CMON games now either at Kickstarters or if I know the game hasn't had a KS campaign (stuff like Gizmos, more "casual" games, etc). I had to skip games like Rising Sun at retail because of all the component upgrades I'm missing from the KS, I think it sucks. I managed to get into the Ankh campaign but I feel they rely too heavily on FOMO, and the fact that I still fall for it makes me hate myself.
I like Munchkin, and for the gameplay, not the humor. But this seems to be a step down compared to the original. It just feels so bland and all of the abilities shown seem so plain (get sword, take dmg, get shield, lose shield, lose sword).
We played Munchkin once and hated it... too much randomness and take-that baked in, plus the rules are confusing. This seems better but there are a lot of better dungeon crawlers out there.
the rule book is awful, it changes terms alot, like clearing a room, is called three different things, and there was no clarification on what happened if no one won the combat (its been answered by cmon online) but the game is a great take that, its balanced and feels like a race to the finish, it only takes a hour to play. its a perfect filler game, the minis are great, but i do have two expansions, alot of kick starters getting sold cheap, i got 2 expansions and base game for 80 quid. i think it will sell for alot more in the next year or so
I have to say that this "version" of Munchkin is definitely not better than the oj Munchkin.. the dice, the cards, the rules all get in the way of the fun to be had in oj munchkin. Plus, there so many holes in the rules that this game feels like its never been play tested. All in all, I feel like this an obvious money grab by CMON..
Totally disagree with his take on regular Munchkin. Some pretty complex strategy to the game, and incorporates negotiation tactics, blackmail, dealmaking, incentives etc.
I came here to see this game brutalized by Tom, but was surprised by the outcome! Still no way I'm buying it, as Munchkin is by far one of the worst and most unfunny games I've ever played 😅
I was so surprised when he said the minis weren't prepainted because they looked so good and in the style of Munchkin.
That paint job fits seamlessly with the rest of the game art. Great Job!

As soon as I saw the great paint job, I knew this was an instant approve for tom
Very good paint job, really helps sell the character humor
From memory (what was posted on IG) his daughter Melody painted them.
Knowing Tom's long history with Munchkin, I was very happy to hear he enjoyed this, I adore Munchkin, and so to me this is amazing.

Coming next year: Munchkin: Milking the Teat

How painting miniatures makes you a game designer?
wow great paint job on the minis
I’ve only played Munchkin once and it overstated its welcome. Have never played it again.
1) if you already in a room and other player spawn defeated monster there? 2) if empty room visited by one player and then second, are both getting rewards for rooms? (like 2 chests for 1st level rooms?) EVEN if they died and now visiting them again?
Very good paint job . Guess I will start painting mine this week.
Dude doesn't like munckins cause he probably loses too much. It's a great game and is super fun with friends.
During the kickstarter they never posted the manual or any examples of gameplay. It almost seemed like the gameplay itself was secondary to everything else.
I mean... you just described Munchkin.
That is incorrect. The rulebook was on the kickstarter page from day one
I like the original Munchkin and I have some of the boards for tracking levels but this doesn't seem to have much more substance than that. I get that having 3D models of some of the classic monsters is cool but they aren't so cool that I need this in my life.
I might get this as a gift for some friends that love Muchkin games.
Great painting job.
We always liked Munchkin. Now we like this better.
Which daughter. That seems like a great paint job.
My guess would be the artistic one; the second daughter.
Yes, that was juvenile, and yes, I was amused by it.
I was looking at this and the expansion recently (pre orders) but decided to wait. I might get it later -- if there is a big sale on the game.
I’ve never played munchkin, but I really dig the artwork in this game.

I just like to drop the win level to say 5 if you want a shorter game.
Nice painting :)
A lot of Munchkin humor can be kind of groan-worthy, but I will admit, I got a chuckle out of Exploding Dice.
Tom: My daughter painted it.
Main villain from Batman Beyond: Do you know how little it narrows it down?
Great paintjob👍
No mention of the original Dungeon?
The rulebook is hard to understand. Honestly I learned more from RUclips, to be perfectly honest.

11:35 What? Your daughter is a game designer? 😱😀

Clank vs Munchkin Dungeon?
Starting from about half-way in this review, my mind just went: "But do you even need these miniatures? What do you use them for?" Still don't know the answer to that...
they move from room to room, and they die sit in the grave yard then respawn, so you need them
@@nickhilbert750 Still sounds like the card itself could be used just as easily, but OK. At least they have a purpose.
Isn’t this what Munchkin Quest was?
Munchkin Quest is the better implementation of Munchkin as a board game. This doesn't look too bad though.
Im so mad i ever bought munchkin, it was fun a bit and we played a bit , but the games would last hours to jus end by some random stuff , at least we dont play much anymore , but sometimes my buddies wanna play and i have to dread it for 2 hours

MD is going to beat Clank

I swear Munchkin has the worst art in board games given how successful it seems to be
It's not awful, it's "iconic".
Totally disagree with his take on regular Munchkin. Some pretty complex strategy to the game, and incorporates negotiation tactics, blackmail, dealmaking, incentives etc.
