My #1 is easily social interaction. So much social interaction is either centered around food or looking at a screen together, while board games brings us together around a table. It works really well as a way to get to know people, because it facilitates having something to talk about without the pressure. And it allows you to slowly over repeat interactions around the table get to know people in a more natural way. When I felt my social life was stagnant, seeking out the local board game club ended up being a great solution, because it gave me time and repeat meetings to slowly get to know people.
My main reason for board gaming is to see joy in other people when they connect with a game or gaming in general. I never want to win, don’t really care, but teaching and seeing people have fun is awesome.
some of my top reasons: - enjoying artworks (especially on cards and cardboard boards/tiles) - enjoying game mechanics - enjoying variability - enjoying themes
I was talking to someone about the accidental learning in board games just last week. Two terms came up in a very short conversation and I knew both of the terms not from board games directly but actually just from watching the dice tower!
I agree with "Accessibilty" on Tom's list a lot. I made a Top 100 list on BGG geeklists and one of the designers personally thanked me. Me. Someone whose list matters ZERO to the community and which I'll bet only a dozen people even looked at. Crazy. I've also seen several people I'd say were "Gamer famous" at Conventions and who were very obviously available to meet, but I'm generally too shy to step up and say anything.
aww I love everyone’s lists! I would add board game cafes - such a fun thing to be able to do especially when traveling, it’s like a comfort space and you can watch other people having fun, play a game you don’t have or couldn’t afford and spend time with anyone! ❤
Hey! Great list folks! All of these top ten items could have their own top 10 list. I'd love a list of games I can "accidently" learn from. I think my top three would be: 3) achieving a meditative flow state through personal expertise in a game. 2) Great themes that *make* me learn. 1) Bonding - Strengthening relationships with friends and family. Last comment, Zee makes me laugh almost everyday, thanks man.
This might be my favorite Top 10 you guys have ever done. While I think we don't ALWAYS have to share the reasons we do things. It really does enrich and justify our interests when we ponder what makes them so interesting to us. Great to know your guys' "why"s.
I 100% agree with you Camilla. I LOVE organizing board games. And then finding out how to better organize the game to make it easier to set up or teach is so satisfying.
On the note of organizing and being meticulous, I just got Endless Winter. When I opened the box and saw how each thing had its on special insert and a sheet for how to use the inserts, I was soooo excited (maybe unnaturally so) and I got to sit and sort it out and enjoyed every minute of organizing it.
Thrill of Improvement is such a good one. I think that's a big part of why Dominion is one of my favorite games, the journey of going from bad to average and feeling like I'm constantly learning how to be better at the game is something very rewarding but also personal.
Thrill of improvement is so good, for me it gives me that feeling accomplished as I "crack the code", that's why I love Vital Lacerda games (also, love the idea and term of "accidental learning") thank you for putting into words my own feelings 💕
I'm with Camilla on the organizing and sorting. I love dumping the components in the box at the end of night so that I can sort them the next morning while enjoying a nice cup of coffee. Weirdly super fun.
One of my favorite things abour games is seeing a thematic and mechanical element come together. I may not like the game, but I love peeking behind the curtain at the mechanism and seeing what the designer and publisher were intending with that idea. For example the simple idea of pandemics shuffle and place on top mechanic is one of my favorite mechanisms because it was one of the first times i played a game and was like "ohhh thats super clever! Its emulating this real world idea!" I had played the normal monopoly and uno, but having it emulate something and realizing what its emulating on my own and discoving that is so much fun for me.
This is a fantastic list. My love for board gaming has waned a little bit over the last year, and this video was a real boost for me. Thank you all, you rock.
1. I love beautiful art/ components 2. I love strategizing. Whether it be for efficiency or fun or both! (My brain needs to be exercised regularly) 3. I suck at small talk. Therefore, games are a great way to spend time with people I enjoy being around without having to engage in conversation about topics I'm not really interested in. 4. I really love seeing " what's going to happen" as far as randomness and player choices are concerned.
Love Tom’s #8- it’s so true. Thing I find most useful is when rules questions come up, typically in newer/Kickstarter type games- a question on BGG will so often get answered by the designer themselves
Accessibility: At GenCon 2023, we attended the magnificent musical rewards show and sat front row, within reach of so many great people from the industry. My buddy kept harassing me aboit sitting so close to the designer of a certain multiple award winning game whose cutesy dragon art the world swoons for, but which actively kept me from even trying the game. (I know, I am scum) Fast forward in time to the final day of the con as we sit down at Pandasaurus games to demo Emerge, and who should sit down right across from me, but a certain game deaigner! I congratulated him on his awards, and we had a great time during the game. I even played a perfectmove and he called me a name I will not repeat here as it stole the move from him. I was thrilled with the experience in spite of the fact that I sat there terrified that my buddy was going to rat me out at any moment!
For me, the top two are engaging the strategic part of my brain and connecting with friends and family. If a game isn’t doing one of those two things then I have little interest in it.
Amen on Tom's #5!! My boyfriends parents are a little older than mine (65s instead of 55s) and his dad "Does not enjoy any games"... which is WILD to me. So they come over (I love them btw) and they just want to sit in the kitchen for hours and talk 0_0 My whole family plays boardgames. They are apart of every family gathering/holiday. Party games when we have a lot of people, or "real boardgames" for when fewer people are interested in that session.
Everyone I know would rather visit than play a game. If we haven’t seen each other in a while we have enough to talk about but if we see each other enough we are probably just regurgitating the same stuff. Let’s play games.
I don't know why this setting was turned on. We have it turned off by default, so I've turned it off for this video. I'll later check if RUclips changed something.
Chris here. That one's on me. We would remove it now, but that it would remove the ability to see the live-chat so we're gonna leave it as my weird little goof. Our secret.
1 thing that only boardgames let you do: SCHEMING! I can sit around a table and plot the destruction of the people around me. I anticipate your moves and plot my counter. Then, when we're done we can joke about all the tactics we were going to use. Scheming isn't otherwise acceptable in polite society 😏
Why are there adverts after every number on this video? I hope this is not the new normal for Dice Tower videos. We like to watch them with our son because they are ad free, so we don't have to worry about inappropriate content popping up in an advert.
I'm really sorry. I think RUclips changed some default setting about mid-video ads. I just disabled them here and I'm going to look into the general settings.
Nice list, very interesting. But board gaming does hit several notes that other hobbies may not. I have learned many incidental facts from board games (like capitals and cities in Pandemic).
Just finished watching and noticed something strange. The picture for Tom's #1. The person in the front with black shirt and white hat. Who's hand is that on their right hip? It doesn't seem to belong to any one next to them.....
The BIG difference as to why I love board games over competitive games like some card games or video games or even sports, is because it really doesn't matter if you win or lose. It never feels like the purpose of the game. It is more about people coming together to see cool stuff happen.
@@thedicetowerI was looking for it a couple of days ago. Too bad. I am including my list here in case someone can sneak it into the people's choice. First without numbers and below with numbers. Every Top 10 list should be followed by a video of Mike Dilisio correcting your choices with the right answers to the top 10 list. 😁😂😇
Yes !!!!!
The "right" answers 🤔
That happens in my head

Hey guys! This video is about boardgames, but it shows how each one of you is such a good human being . Thanks for letting us know you better.
My main reason for board gaming is to see joy in other people when they connect with a game or gaming in general. I never want to win, don’t really care, but teaching and seeing people have fun is awesome.

A lovely top 10 and one that I can agree with whole heartedly. Thanks for being a great support for this hobby.

I've nodded a lot, I've laughed and cried. Very emotional list. Thank you again for another extraordinary list, everyone!

Tom’s #4 Exploration is a fantastic image. I’m shocked no one commented on it. I want it on my wall. Where can I find that image?

I love that, in the lists at the end, Zee's #8 says "Trhill of Improvement". You've got to create your own opportunities for thrills.
Great video to have my name read as a DT contributor!

I soooooo enjoy organizing my books, games and favorite things.... opposite with all the grownup stuff - paperwork, bills, etc
This is a fantastic list. My love for board gaming has waned a little bit over the last year, and this video was a real boost for me. Thank you all, you rock.

"Mechanical Brouhaha" is the name of my Rage Against the Machine cover band
Zee is going to start doing sign language for the hearing impaired, that way when Tom announces a name it can be mispronounced twice!
INCIDENTAL is a good replacement word for accidental learning. But they are very similar here!
Camilla gels with Tom and Zee so well. Would love to see more top 10s with these three
Love Tom’s #8- it’s so true. Thing I find most useful is when rules questions come up, typically in newer/Kickstarter type games- a question on BGG will so often get answered by the designer themselves
Camillas #3 so true. Cthulhu wars actually got me into Mr. Lovecrafts stories . Way way kool and eerie and it made me like the game even more.

Wish everyone at the dice tower would do this list!
Camilla is so enthusiastic. Even in instances when I disagree, I still enjoy listening to her
Some good items on this list. Nicely done!
2:29 - That's not "T". That's "I've got your nose." You'd think a grandfather would know that! 🙂
To be fair to sports, most often I'm not watching a game played by a favorite team, so I'm happy afterwards as long as the game itself was good.
That's a good point. I think that would make for more fun watching, honestly.
What a great and inspiring list. Well done!
Wow, I want to watch but I'm getting so many ad breaks! Is this something within your control? It spoils it somewhat 😢
For me, the top two are engaging the strategic part of my brain and connecting with friends and family. If a game isn’t doing one of those two things then I have little interest in it.
Twilight Struggle is really good at teaching about the Cold War (probably the most obvious example of learning)
Best top ten list you folks have done!

Ummm have Dice Tower turned the ads on for their videos? It made this video quite frustrating to get through
I don't know why this setting was turned on. We have it turned off by default, so I've turned it off for this video. I'll later check if RUclips changed something.
A wonderful idea for a video and brilliantly executed!!!!
The intro was all kinds of wrong 😂😂

Camilla! Love the Wonderland's War shirt!
I'm only 10 minutes in and I'm worried that Camilla's foot will fall off before we get to no.1 😬

I need more Mike!!!
Nice list, very interesting. But board gaming does hit several notes that other hobbies may not.
I have learned many incidental facts from board games (like capitals and cities in Pandemic).
I really want to play Organ Harvester by Zee Garcia.
I really enjoyed this, thank you!

Lol. How do you figure board games matter any less or more than the other things you mentioned?
Yeah, that cave painting was definitely a horse, not a cow.
In Iceland nerds name their kids "Marvel's Thor" 😂
love you guys, great top
I don’t know if you done this but maybe this is a list idea. Games everyone loves but I just don’t get, or games I love but no one does
'Incidental' learning
Love you all 😂🎉
I would say the artwork of games.
Is this live or just a video?
Spittle...the real reason for Chip Theory games.
When does voting start for the top 100 from 2023?
The voting has started and ended already! I ran it for more than three weeks. :)

Mysthea
Dominion

Apiary
Terra Mystica

2. Star Realms
3. Summoner Wars
4. Dune: Imperium
5. Wingspan
6. Mysthea
7. Dominion
8. Scythe
9. Apiary

People learned who the game Targi was based on.
Everyone, go back to Tom's #5. Is that a naked, anthropomorphic bird? Or just a gargantuan regular bird? Either way, it's insane.
I think many of those were AI generated images.
Bright 🍬 👍🍉🤣
You forgot the Italian Stallion!
I didn't know what Tiwanku or Pachamama was until the Board Game came out.
It was not the good intro xD
There's a lot of playing card collectors, who are too afraid to even open up their decks, keep them all sealed, like why?
Ummm..... Because they are.... Collectors?!

First-person games make me nauseous, so does any hand-held videos like most of Rahdo Runs reviews
we geeks looove our lists 😀
Is it just me, or does milla have the same face in every selfie she takes?
Almost everyone does.
Roy definitely does, he's always mugging up the camera lmao. Makes my dad n I laugh
