- Common problem solutions:
- When you import a character from Wow Model Viewer, don't import the model that has "sdr" in its name. It brings in a faulty rig.
- If your model looks silver, change the Viewport Display from Solid to Textured. Watch 10 seconds at 4:45 in this tutorial: • Warcraft art with Blen...
- If your character has weird transparent parts when you import it, you need to change all its materials' alpha from Blend to Opaque. You can join my Discord server and we'll show you how to do that (link below).

Special thanks to Charlie ( / magnetargirl_ ) for being everything I forgot people could be, and without whose selfless kindness this tutorial wouldn't have happened.
This is a masterful and incredibly beginner friendly tutorial. Thumbs up for you Belvane! Your tuts are insanely helpful and to the point on these topics.
Awh, thanks, Raccoon!
This is an amazing guide to learn everything you need to get started making beautiful art of your favorite WoW character! Very helpful, and easy to follow.
Thank you very much for this lovely review!
Thank you so much for posting this guide and all of the others that you have. I've been wanting to try to learn how to use blender with wow model viewer for sometime now and with how easy your guides are to follow I feel like I'll be able to learn everything I need to in no time. ^^
That's great to hear, thank you! I hope you make wonderful art that will bring you joy!
Just great, thanks for showing me how to make the bones more comfortable.
This is the best tutorial I've found so far! It's straight to the point and
explained really well. This is making me excited try out and learn new things 😊
I'm really happy to hear this :) Thanks for taking a moment to tell me this, Mona!
Thank you a tone for the tutorial! It was really difficult to find one on the newer versions of blender, since the old and new UI's are vastly different from one another
I don't know anything about Blender but I always come back to this video for unintentional ASMR. Your voice soothes me for some reason.
That's an unexpected, but very sweet thing to hear
Oh my god. Thank you so much! Always wanted to try doing something like this but I always got scared off by how difficult it looked.
damn, this is incredible well made.
very easy to follow, informative and structured.
Whoah, thanks a lot for the kind words, Lakus!
Thanks a lot! I have been looking for this desperatly. The trick with the bones saved me a lot of time, I didn't know how to arrange them.
I'm glad you found it useful!
Amazing video, liked and subscribed! Keep it up!
This is great! Finally got it to work even with the bones. I did have to download a Older Blender version cause with the latest it won't support XNALara for some reason, but once I got the bones imported again I can just save the file and open it up in the latest Blender version again, so no biggy.
I've been too shy to say hello on your stream, but I wanted to thank you for these tutorials! I stopped doing 3D art about 10 years ago due to a bad experience but you made it so easy and fun to follow it reignited a passion I thought I lost. Thank you so much again and I hope all the good things come your way
I'm 8 months late with replying (I read RUclips comments about once a year) but your words are wonderful and I wanted to thank you for them. I don't know if you're on my server or not, but I hope you're still making art and enjoying it hugely - you deserve it, and I'm honoured to be a stepping stone in your journey to having fun.
Dude Ive used blender for years. But i still learned some really helpful stuff here. Great walk through! Appreciate the help!
Does it still work? I don't think Wow model viewer works anymore with Dragonflight
super informative, ty for sharing!
Ok yeah this is utterly fantastic and amazing you definitely got a like amd a new subscriber
This was a very helpful tutorial. I managed to follow it and pose a gnome in Blender. I later rewatched it and applied what I learned to a night elf. I still have a lot to learn though.
Don't we all still have a lot to learn? But starting is the hardest. I'm glad this tutorial helped you, I'm glad you're on the road now, and I hope you get to make the art you want!
This is amazing!!! I just started with Blender a few days ago and its just great, i show it your channel in my University and now me are a few following you! Take your sub from me!!! Cannot wait to see more! Thanks once more!!
Whoah, thank you so much, Gabriel!
The technique for getting the character armature is actually so helpful when dealing with any xps model!
I'm so glad to hear that!
Thank you for the great tutorial. it has helped me extremely!
I'm really glad to hear that, even if I'm a year late in replying!
@@belvane all good
for this we have written once in the discord. and there I also thanked then :3
Thats a lot of information packed into 1 video >.
Oh my god I didn't know about the XNALaraMesh addon.... I used to spend atleast an hour or 2 fixing up the armature before being able to use it, it's gonna be such a huge time saver, so a huge thanks for the tutorial, really helpful even for someone who's used blender for more than 4 years
I know, right, Shenimations?! I made a whole lot of noise when Ninthie pushed me to try it. I'm glad you found some of the tutorial useful, and I wish you happy Blendering and may Blender fail to try and kill you
@@belvane That little trick just saved me at least few hours, thanks!
Amazing guide! I'm stuck on the first part though & am wondering if you had any ideas on how to solve this, WMV doesn't seem to be managed anymore with it being lastly updated back in shadowlands, so there is 1 Alpha client that is actually working for me even then it doesn't really support or have anything within its files sadly & cant even import wow chars using Armoury, Any idea on how to sort this out or even a suggestion for another WoW model viewer that can support Dragonflight files, thanks!
Thank you! I really appreciate the video!
I'm glad it's useful!
Pls do more videos u are an amazing teacher!!!!
The best tutorial! ty very much!
Whoah, that's high praise, thank you!
I'm looking into try making my own custom wow 3d art and possibly animations and I'm really not good when it comes to fiddly tech stuff so I'm a complete noob. Thanks so much for these tutorials~
I'm very glad this helped! And thank you for dropping me a line, it's always great to know when this is useful for someone!
NOTE: I found my shoulder did a lot of clipping. This is reduced by following the instructions at ~ 9:20, except ALSO linking the shoulders to the bicep-arm as 'Bone Relative', after linking to 'Bone' for the shoulder.
Light bless you!
And you! Good luck with making art!
OMG Thank you so much with the bones, I was manually doing this.....I will donate my firstborn to you!
I would be a terrible mother to your firstborn. I'd rather you keep them and tell me when you enjoy making art, instead
Very helpfull, thanks a lot!
I'm so glad it's useful for you!
Thank you
Been looking for a while to find something exactly like this. Are we not fortuned to live in a world where we can learn from others without having to depend on schools or the public system, I simply be typing things on my keyboard and then I am able to learn from a Master teacher in a matter of seconds. Meanwhile school is the same now as it was 80 years ago. I have never dabbled in 3d before, so we'll see how much I am able to learn from you. I will be back to watch more, for sure. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Hendrik, I feel exactly the same! I leant almost 100% of what I know in Blender from googling it - all free and at the tips of my fingers. I'm honoured to pass that joy on.
If you're not into Warcraft art, I recommend Blender Guru, Darrin Lile and CG cookie as great places to start. If Warcraft is your thing, you're welcome on my Discord server and the gang and me would love to make the journey easier for you.
And thank you for the wise, echoing words you wrote. It's good to be understood.
Hey quick question. When i import a rig from model viewers the bones all point to the side. Is there a way to rotate them all so they point as they do in this guide?
Very nice tutorial.
CLIIIIIIIIINT!!!!!!
@@belvane Miss you!
I can't get the model to show properly :( either i get a purply version of the model inside itself or a model that's semitransparant with floating eyeballs :\
Hey Jim, sorry for the late reply! If you join our Discord server (the link is in the vid's description) we can easily show you how to solve this.
Oh my god who are you and how did you know I needed this
I'm Belvane, I didn't, but I'm really glad it helped you! I hope it gives you all the info you want and that you're making art you enjoy!
"and it's not the thing with the diapers" I spilled my tea lmao
I need more tutorials! 😍
Oof, I wish I could, Sookie! I'll try!
Hello Belvane, I would like to say that I am finding your tutorials incredible! I started now to learn 3d arts in WoW, a lot because of your arts!
I have a small doubt, if possible: The wow model viwer is exporting the characters in a broken way, you know how I can solve this? I'm using the wow model viwer version 10.0 - Shadowlands
Hello Vinicios! If you join our Discord server (the link is in the vid's description) we can show you how to solve it, it's easy!
you should make an updated guide:)
from someone who knows nothing about computers and non english person i can confirm this is the most useful tutorial in youtube about WMV and BLENDER,thanks Belvane.
(still missing solid textures when i export, maybe can you help me)
I hardly ever read RUclips comments, so I'm very late. I'm so glad this was useful for you, and even gladder you chose to tell me so, with such kind words! Thank you, you made my day!
As for help, while I hope you found a solution already, you can always drop by my Discord server and ask - the link's in the description.
Really good tutorial, I have just trouble to grasp the final part with kinematics, it totally deforms my character when I try to set them properly. I think I have just trouble to understand which bone to connect to which.
I read the comments here around once a year, so if you have issues and want an answer today rather than in a year, it's best to ask them on our Discord server. The problem you describe happens when we forget to unparent the IK controller bones.
Hi, today Wow model Viewer no longer works, I have to switch to Wow.Export where we can export glTF models. Does it change something about your tuto ? thanks !
Great tutorial! But one advice: You should have also shown how this would work on Draenei or Tauren since they dont have a simple leg as gnomes do. I tried it on my Draenei as you showed it and didnt as it should had.
If I tried to cover all the varieties, such as digitigrade legs, my tutorials will be six hour long :) You're welcome to join the Discord server and ask there, there's a short video that shows it.
Hi Belvane ! Thanks a lot for the tutorial :) can I use this rigged character for animations also ? Like a wow machinima for example
I never read RUclips comments so I missed this, Cem, apologies! You can't use the wow animations on a rig cleaned with XNALara (or in a rig where you used Edit Mode to move any of the bones). If the rig is untouched than you can easily apply Wow animations to it and they will work.
Very well made! Although i am having a small problem and that is when i want to use the 1 5 and 7 camera view it doesn't work for me.
I don't understand your issue, but if it's still a thing you can drop by my server and ask! Apologies for the late reply.
You're a saint
Firstly, this is a great tutorial and I look forward to learning more from you in the future! I am having a problem though. When I import the WMV files, my model doesn't stand up on the X Axis, but lays on it. The bones are also pointing right instead of straight up like in the video. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
Hey Danielle! Join our Discord server and ask there! You can find the link in the vid's description, and you'll likely get near immediate replies - unlike RUclips, which I check about once every two months. Drop by, we'll help you!
When I try to unify the textures for the body it gets rid of the textures on random parts of the body, bringing them down to only one of each leaves nothing but a untextured body with only a patch of texture left
Do all of them need to be kept for the newer shadowlands human models?
I figured it out, they just didn't come in the right order so I had to move them around so they inherited the right texture
Keeping this here in case it happens to anyone else importing
Is XNALaraMesh compatible with the newest versions of Blender or do I have to downgrade to 2.8?
My model viewer doesn't allow me to export in FBX. What do I do?
Great tutorial! Gotta admit though, whenever I import the Xnalaramesh thing at 7:00, it says "ERROR File Format Unrecognized." Any form of help would be very appreciated!
Hello Ridge! If you join our Discord server (the link is in the vid's description) we can show you how to solve it!
Very helpful
Thank you!
"As useless as a Discipline priest in Legion"
There's a way to do the same with the rig in Maya? Or I need to rig it from 0?
I'm 100% sure there's a way to import an FBX into Maya. You'll have to look it up, though - I did very little Maya and have no idea.
hi, can i export from wow model viewer with animations and use them?
Yup! You can ask on my Discord server how to do that, we have a tutorial in the FAQ.
то чем вы научили меня , это очень круто
Я рад это слышать!
Hello! I imported my FBX file but for some reason the model of my character is just silver, does anyone know a fix?
I think you have to change what you have selected for Viewport shading in the top right. It's 4 little spheres. You likely have the second one and want the third one. Let me know if that helps! I'm super new to this as well.
Hey Alex, sorry for the late reply! I'm not used to being on the content-maker side of RUclips :) Sam Wilkes gave you the answer already, but if you have more question I suggest you join our Discord server - you won't have to wait two weeks for a reply, and when I'm not around the gang will help you with anything (they will probably beat me to it anyway): discord.gg/vhmprKP
@@sammysamo That's the right answer, and thank you for helping Alex there :) Hey, come and join our Discord server, Sam! The gang is super friendly to new people (and anyone) and we can get to see you transcend from new to awesome. discord.gg/vhmprKP
@@belvane thank you! That sounds great. I feel like a real dummy every time I open Blender, but it's getting easier and I would love to join!
oh my god, I used to import every model as fbx and then make a new rig myself for each one... am I stupid?
Thanks a lot for the video!!
You are a *world* of not stupid. Some people's minds are oriented into system design, some are good at basketball, and some can understand body language. This is why we're social animals - so we can complete and help each other. I'm 100% sure that there's stuff you do infinitely better than me, and that's awesome. Don't you dare speak ill about yourself!
(I'm not fun at parties, and I take jokes too seriously. And I hope you understand that if you're around me and you call yourself stupid I'll smack you with my spoon.)
I messed up somewhere and for some reason when I move the shin bone both legs start to rotate and surprisingly.. The arms start rotating too?..
The reason for it was that I did not untick deform. But I could not unlink the parent.
Another update if someone happens to have this issue: Press ctrl+z enough times until your characters pose is reset to default as doing the: A+alt+g+alt+r+alt+s will not work. Then remove the added 8 bones from their parents. Deform will be unticked if you did that before. Writing this for people that do make the same mistake as me.
can't use the WoW Model Viewer :[ it syas "Fatal Error: Could not load your World of Warcraft Data Folder (error 8)"
Hello John! If you join our Discord server (the link is in the vid's description) we can show you how to solve it!
i follow this by the letter but when i join the mesh to the new armature my textures are all messed up
Hello Shelana! If you join our Discord server (the link is in the vid's description) we can show you how to solve it, it's easy!
Unable to operate, Wow Model viewer does not find the DATA folder, although it is indicated. I tried with the data folder and that of world of warcraft
That's because there's been a new expansion, and WMV's latest version doesn't support it yet. I suggest joining the WMV Discord and asking there.
@@belvane I did but got the same answer.
I tried wowExtractor but it is a bit buggy.
Is there another way or place to retrieve wow assets?
I'm mainly looking for environments even if being able to transpose my character in Blender pleases me a lot.
i messed up somewhere and can't find where I did. now my character has a dislocated shoulder and scoliosis. idk how to fix it.
Either trace back every single step or go to the start and redo.
I second what Dasveit said - do it again, you'll learn a ton. But you're on our server, aren't you, Lexi? I remember you from last stream! You can always ask in our Support channel, if you haven't already.
@@belvane Yeah, I sent that before i knew you had a stream. I just don't know how to get rid of bones. lol
I think I had one of them connected to the wrong spot.
Im having the issue that my characters I import look like ghosts, not solid like yours.
Fixed by the discord, set your textures to opaque!
All the character models I pull up are all blank white and I can't import armory character 😢
That's because Wow Model Viewer doesn't support the current version of Warcraft. You can join our Discord server and ask for a solution.
Doesn't work either on my side, I manage to export the model with wow model viewer but not the textures, by the way all the models have no texture in wow model viewer.
The solution for that is in the video's description.
Why does my toon look silver and have no clothes on when I do this?
I'd reply, but you joined the Discord server and got the answer already :)
Does it work to use my WoW character
As long as you can make it in WMV, it does.
@@belvane wmv doesnt work anymore
For anyone else struggled with closing the extra windows. you gotta press the cross hair thing closer to the window that you are using to close the other with.
I just kept opening a million windows lol
This guide is so good
but i think i'm doing something wrong.. My character model is always partly transparent or the skin on the face is not visible. Q_Q
Had the same problem. With a lot of trying, I figured out that I can change the material properties of the mesh. Just untick "Show Backface" on every material. I just startet with the tutorial so I don't know if this is the right way, but it seems right for me.
Hello Jeevy! If you join our Discord server (the link is in the vid's description) we can show you how to solve it - it's a common issue and easy to solve.
@@dennisbusch1466 You nailed it :) Thanks for helping Jeevy sooner than my never-checking-youtube reply
Did anyone figure out exactly what version to use from blender that works with the last xnalara? The addon does not work in most blender versions it seems you need a specific version.
Also which is the first wmv that gives fbx’s? So you dont need 1000ths of gbites with space you dont wanna spent for wmv if you just play classic anyway 😅
Great video btw ❤ 💯
I got around the XNalara issue in Blender 4.0 by keeping a Blender 3.6 as well, so I import fbx files to 3.6, XNalara them, then append them to 4.0 and work. As for WMV, I have no idea, sorry! Perhaps you could ask in their Discord server - you can find a link in the WMV site.
@@belvane thanks for your guides, as for people searching for WMV versions:
MoP - build: v.0.7.0.5 - 32bit
(viable for old wow machinima studio & npc models for content creators) - build 0704 is recomended due to somewhat working fbx export.
⬆ does load classic npc’s
⬆ does export fbx
⬇ [P.s. if anyone finds out how to export animations sharing the same name on this version, please do tell only real con. Still messed up armatures but thats normal for all WMV
Warlord of dreanor - build: v.0.8.5 32-bit
(last expansion old character models)
⬇ Con doesnt load classic npc textures.
⬇Scourgefemale is broken
Battle for Azeroth - build 09689
can also work with classic models. game: 8.3.7 (tabard and taurenmale m2 classic is messed up)
WMV Error 0? What to do?
That's because there's been a new expansion, and WMV's latest version doesn't support it yet. I suggest joining the WMV Discord and asking there.
You didn't cover the Autosmooth Process of importing when the shadows of the Normals are off or the merge by distance preparation.
For anyone having weird shadows -> Object Data Properties -> Normals -> Uncheck Auto Smooth
Though the armature import-export is B a s e d.
Me intereso tu tutorial aunque no lo entiendo puedo aprender viendo lo que hace ojala encuentre uno asi de bueno en español 😊☺

Nice video, but the work required for just one model is insane, I guess I won't be able to make my own art.
That's true - cleaning the models takes some time. I wouldn't call it insane, but that's down to each person's preferences.
