I came from poverty. My parents were both disabled. They pinched every penny. Even though my mom was blind she sewed our clothes. They would save money and pay cash for things we really needed. They may have wanted things but only bought what was needed. I have gone to Walmart and have purchased $5 and $3 dollar shoes. My slides I wear inside the house are a $3 Walmart find. I’m on a very limited income so I make every penny count. I was unable to work during covid and went through my savings staying afloat. Now I’m only working 4/5 days a month so still can’t put much into a savings account. Thank goodness my parents taught me well.

My shoes have a cycle. They start as walking/work out shoes. When those are too worn, they become the woodworking shoes (we cut wood for our wood stove plus I have a wood shop). After that they become the garden shoes and their final destination is when they become mowing shoes. Nothing survives the greenness of mowing. I don't have the best of knees so I purchase mine at Ross's Dress for Less. I purchased the last leather pair for $14.00! I too hate to shop. I would literally rather chew my own arm off than go to a mall.😳 Congratulations on your finds!!

I grew up in a basic middle class household in the 60's and 70's. We all got a pair of shoes about every six months as we grew. Always a pair of sneakers and a pair for going out.
When I moved out on my own, I worked at a deli while I went to college. My rent sucked up nearly all of my income of minimum wage.
Once I started working a 9-5 job, I started stock piling and couldn't stop. Clothes, food, undies, socks........ you name it. I had to have back ups of everything. I had a fear of never having enough. I'm 61 now and still to this day, always buy in duplicates (or more). Especially food. I remember those lean years where it was all I could do to feed my animals while I went without.
I deal hunt constantly but it's the fear I can 't shake............Weird. I have plenty of money, own my home, and obviously will never be without at this stage but now it's just become a habit. More than I need but the fear is still there.

He is very picky and will buy a pair and then not like them, so he will give them to my husband. My husband has had to buy work boots, but we have not purchased any everyday shoes for him in about 9 years. Last year, my husband was saying that the pair he had was getting wore out and so I suggested that he just wait and see if his dad had any. Sure enough, he did. I put them in my closet and I plan to wear one pair at a time until that pair is like your Nike’s then I’ll get out the next pair and repeat. I’m still on the first pair. I think I’m set forever.

I just cant bring myself to wear them until I have completely annihilated the ones I am actively wearing. I literally darn them to keep them going and only reluctactly broke out a new pair when I went hiking.
I am actually amazed you never got into army surplus boots. Many of these boots were worn for a few weeks by a new recruit who dropped out, and then dumped on the market. Just make sure you get "classic" leather stitched boots and not ones with foam and plastic composite soles. I have a pair of British Army boots that are still alive and kicking after two decades. As long as you take care of the upper, they just need a resole every few decades.

I am trying to be frugal, but as for shoes, socks and underwear - I buy new ones every time they start looking "not nice". And I have more than just two pairs of shoes, because I go to work by bus (I live in Europe) and if it rains and your shoes get wet inside, then what will you do tomorrow? I mean, tomorrow morning they are going to be still wet, right? So I have two main pairs of shoes that are suitable for some regular rain, plus I have one pair of breathable shoes with a mesh on top of them. And because I love, love, love comfy shoes, all of my shoes are Adidas because they have a special insole that is made of memory foam and you feel like walking on a cloud. That really is something I do appreciate and I am willing to pay for. The same goes for my sandals, slippers, rubber boots, snow boots, etc. I appreciate comfort and I am not willing to save on that. As for socks and underwear - you can buy them really, really cheaply here, for a couple of buck for a bunch of them - so why save on these if they cost almost nothing? I would hate wearing worn out socks, not to mention socks with holes. You do feel the hole - and that is not pleasant. You can always save elsewhere - on food, on gas, electricity, etc. But on shoes, socks, underwear? No. That is not for me. Plus here, in my country, you just don't want to look shabby. You can have second-hand clothes and no one needs to know, it can still be in a perfect condition. But socks and shoes - well. People do look on these here. And it is customary to take your shoes off whenever you enter a house (yours or someone else's). So people will see your socks.

There will likely come a time when you realize how important good shoes are. No matter how cheap shoes are and even how comfortable, arch support and proper tread is so important if you don’t want to experience pain later in life. Good quality costly shoes will last you many years without pain but cheap shoes ultimately can cost you more in medical/pain issues. I have no found decent supportive shoes for cheap but they last so many years they are still cost effective. That’s a great deal for disposable shoes, I had a pair of disposable shoes I wear in the garden when muddy and my feet and back kill me on the days I wear them so I finally let them go because not worth it.

Nice. Easy listening. I spend my life in running shoes. I have very small feet so have problems getting the right fit. Comfort is the key. You've struck a gold mine with them shoes!

I'm happy for your great buys, these shoes will serve you well👌Personally I cannot wear any shoes made of plastic, my feet will start burning and sweating instantly. I only wear leather shoes , real leather, but I also wesr them until they literally fall apart. I hate buying new shoes and breaking them in, will wear mine as long as possible.. Not out of frugality, but out of comfort . And leather lasts forever , so it is worth it.

I grew up like that too. My parents only bought me a pair of sneakers that was supposed to last the whole school year and not enough clothes. I was made fun of in school though so I learned a neat hack in high school; just buy child size clothes. Which I still do to date in my late 30s because I am petite lol. I'm doing ok financially but I'm still pretty frugal and I shop at high end thrift places or at Burlington.

You're so lucky! I was that way too until I hurt my Planta Fasia 5 yrs ago on my the bottom of my left foot. It was very painful. I even wore a sleeve at night to keep my foot from curling and damaging it more, for a year and a half! I walked with a limp for 18 months until it healed. Now, I use good arch supports in all my shoes. I have high arches any way, but I'm very careful how I step. Of course, I am 65 now, so being careful with myself is becoming more prominent. I recently walked by a cabinet door and shaved off a layer of skin on my arm. Thinning skin is another condition of getting older. I'm telling you this because I would like you to be aware. I wear sleevies a lot in summer and long sleeves in winter.

I wish I could find shoes that fit my feet. After working one day which involves me walking between 15K and 20K steps a day I can barely walk due to so much pain afterwards. Everything is too narrow even when they say they're wide or extra wide. They're not. What a sweet clip of your babies at the end. Rocky looks to be so happy since getting his little sister a couple years ago and brings tears to my eyes seeing them so happy. Dogs rule.

      Vivobarefoot.
They are made to fit the human foot, unlike most shoes. Most important for children. Wide toe box, thin sole, no heel. They're quite expensive but well made, and will last a long time, imo.

I do this, too. Clearance is amazing, and I get teased a little by family members. I bought shoes, boots ,pajamas and many of the items I picked up for Christmas presents. I will also see many items I know will end up in Clearance and just keep checking back. Not one item was over 5 dollars. Most were only 2.

Leather shoes have lasted me 15 years! Yes, the sole was replaced multiple times over the course of that time but the cost per wear was more than worth it!

Princess you seemed excited about getting new sneakers, maybe you might like shopping a lilttle sooner than before you can see inside of your shoe from the sole. Treat yourself, you sure deserve it. 🐕💕🐕

Shoes used to last longer. I have bought two pairs of more higher end boots lasted two years. One pair higher end shoes lasted one year. They all fell apart. My experience has been not worth paying more. Going back to cheaper footwear.

Enjoy your youth. I’m 74 and could wear cheap shoes when I was younger but now I have to spend more money for more supportive ones and when they get worn down I feel pain in my legs and have to replace them ( almost yearly).

If you look at how the 30 and 20s were people used to sew holes in clothing or mend them, that is still done today, oops , not cool or is it cool. Worn socked can be used to wash a car, pot holder to pick up hot pan, or rag to clean. Yep, all is recyclable. Throw shoes away and keep shoe laces if you can.
