I shoot with Fujifilm GFX 100s, so I'm not into any of these. I also don't shoot sports or action, maybe I would get Canon R5c for an all around kit, there is 28-70mm f2 for example and other amazing RF lenses. The prices are quite crazy, but some of the lenses are superior to what Sony have, but I like also the options on Sony from Sigma for example.
The purpose of the photography decides the gear.

I found your video precisely to find support on which camera to buy and mainly, due to the variety of lenses and prices that Sony offers. (Canon girl here, too - although I have gotten into Fuji lately) I do agree 100% with your commentary about third-party lenses being blocked by Canon…and Canon not doing the right thing for it’s loyal photographers. I switched to Sony several years ago after my Canon was stolen along with all my lenses. At the time my main reason for choosing Sony was I wanted a full frame mirorrless so I could adapt old lenses. I don't shoot much video but the IBIS really helps in low light situations like live music. There are tradeoffs of course but it works for me.

That's one reason I switched to the A7RIII, just to use my Carl Zeiss manual primes in Pentax K mount with focus peaking and exposure zebras.
The Distagon's and Planar's are last a lifetime lenses with phenomenal build and image quality and it's really all about making those work.
The K-1 was a great camera, but I struggled manual focusing with a DSLR. Sold 24 lenses off too.

I love the look & feel of Canon mid & full frame cameras & I have been wondering if i should move to a mirrorless camera or even switch to Sony.
Now I only shoot astrophotography & Sony seems to be better in low light / noise from the reviews I've seen on RUclips. Also the fact you can get 3rd party lenses for mirrorless with Sony cheaper & not have to use an adapter is a huge reason for me to switch the only thing holding me back is that Sony camera bodies dont look & feel like a canon or nikon body.

Welcome to the Sony world. You will love it.
I had the Canon 5D mark II and the Mark III. Back then, I would call Canon every two weeks to get eye auto focus. The Research and development dept told me that I was one of 100's who called. Canon did not listen and used the cripple hammer. I can't tell you how many portraits were focused on the eyelash instead of the eye. I was on a shoot and held a Sony camera. The eye locked in EVERY shot. I could not believe it. Well, Canon stopped listening to their customers so I went with the Sony A7III. I sold all my Sony L grass and it was an emotional thing for me. I got my first Gmaster lens and shot an entire football team. Every shot was 100% in focus. I was in love with the camera. I will never go back to Canon for how they treated me and other customers. Today I own 3 g primes and EVERY shot is 100% in focus. I used my Sony on the DJI RS 3 pro and the video is gorgeous. Some time ago, Canon used to say that mirrorless cameras were not professional. Well, not listening to your customers is very unprofessional. WELCOME to the Sony all in focus world. It connects to the phone easily and everything works. NO cripple hammers.

And, for a bigger budget, Nikon Z8 is probably the best hybrid out there. Sony RV has very bad rolling shutter in video due to its high megapixel count. As a company, Sony is known to ditch its clients. The A7siii users are a case in point. I have been a Sony user for 15 years but their recent business policies give me shivers.

Choosing the right gear is the smallest step to being great. "Improve your Skills, not your Gear," should be step one. Second, "Know your Gear." Knowing your limits of your gear makes you think differently on how you shoot. Then, finally, pick your gear. I use my Fujifilm X-H2 with the 40mp sensor and tested it against the Sony A1 and the Canon R5 and believe me the Fujifilm checked more boxes of what I needed (including lens selection and weight) than the Sony and Canon.

    • @LauraBC
      @LauraBC  Год назад

This video has NOTHING to do with how to improve your skills, be great or know your gear. You totally misunderstood the whole point of the video. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I have many videos on my channel about how to grow as a photographer and has nothing to do with gear. I even mention at the beginning that this is not a battle between brands and that all the brands are incredible nowadays. The topic is completely the opposite of what you talked about. It's about encouraging everyone to choose THEIR right gear for THEIR specific needs without listening to what others may recommend. It's all about explaining how we all have different photography and video needs during the different stages of our careers. I simply explain my current needs and why I decided to switch, that's all. You actually proved my point by saying that for you, Fujifilm is better. Everyone's opinion and needs are respectable, and there is not right or wrong here. Just different needs and preferences for everyone. 😊

Even with all my experience it’s hard to choose , but I’ve never used Sony so who knows maybe following your decision but for me I think the A7c would be more than enough. Unless you are being paid in an endorsement situation, or shoot medium format, I can't see any reason why you would currently use any other gear apart from Sony. Personally I can not do without the Sony 12-24mm f2.8. There is no substitute. Canon has a couple of nice bodies now finally, but they really need to start releasing a heap of great RF Mount lenses now. I wish they would, so that their competition can encourage Sony further.

I had A7r5. If you want to shoot sports and wild life this is not a great choice. The rolling shutter is horrendous. The electronic shutter is useless and the mechanical shutter is so loud it scares small birds away. It is useless for something like hummingbirds or for any other small birds the wings warp insanely. I went from A1 to A7r5 to see the autofocus improvements but was very unhappy and sold it back for A1. Speaking of Canon R5 I had it for over a year and a half - incredible camera great for sports and wild life and unlike A7r5, R5 has a very fast sensor readout so it can be used successfully for wildlife and birds in flight. Canon Rf glass is insane 28-70/2 is like no other lens I have ever tried. Nothing wrong with Sony and if all you shoot is portraits than A7r5 should work fine. But for general use as all in one camera especially for wildlife and birds I would look elsewhere. This is of course my personal opinion. 😊

The future is bright for Sony, even if they just continue on their current path. Knowing them however, they'll keep innovating and will probably shine even brighter than most people currently expect. The insane AI AF and IBIS of the A7RV is just the beginning, we are going to see it in cheaper cameras going forward AND there's a high chance that stuff like automatic in-camera bracketing and other computational photography will come as well.

  • @digitaldolf
    @digitaldolf Год назад

I haven't looked into the Sony cameras that you mention but if the sensor of the 60 megapixel camera is the same size as the sensor of the other cameras, you just end up with smaller megapixels and less sharpness that has to be compensated again in the camera software. If you want steady videos while on the move, bring a GoPro action camera. Very small and versatile. I shoot with a Canon MKIII myself and I have one Sigma 100mm macro lens. The rest are Canon L lenses. I shoot 4K video sometimes using my Samsung phone and a GoPro. That is sufficient for me.

Top tier Canon cameras & the top tier Canon RF lenses became cost prohibitive for me, not to mention no 3rd party lenses being availiable. I sold all of my Canon gear & invested into the Fujifilm ecosystem of cameras & lenses. I do not regret having done so.

For me, the biggest difference between the manufacturers is that each one focuses on one area and is special in that. You also say yourself that you have found that what YOU need is now better as a total package with Sony. And that is exactly what everyone should be able to find for themselves.

Sony is also doing some shady stuff with their “enthusiastic” cameras like the A7II, A7III & A7IV, which have all a faulty shutter which breaks after the warranty runs out and within 10 000 to 50 000 shots (these models are announced to withstand, on average, 200 000 shots).
And of course, Sony does not recognize a production issue - despite it being clearly one- and requests the consumer to pay for the repair (400€ to 600€).
It’s unacceptable. I’ve been a Sony shooter for 5 years now, I’m clearly switching over to Canon now (the brand I started with)

I am not convinced at all by your justification. R5 would be more than enough in your case, the price for a new one in my country, has dropped to GBP 2300 (excl.vat). You completely don't need to change your existing lenses, EF glasses with an adapter will do the job better than with your old 5DIV.
The other body, would be the budget R6II, (more video oriented).
You vid sounds biased, almost like sponsored by Sony 😯
The only objective problem with the R5 is the wobble stab of the video footage, during intentionall camera movements.
I'm in the process of switching from Nikon to Sony as well, but I'm suffering badly because of it. Being a Canon user I would never choose the clumsy Sony. Megapixels, are NOT everything, I will NOT have the pleasure of taking the Sony into hand. It will be a marriage of convenience, not love. We'll see if it survives ;))

Thank you for sharing Laura. I believe you have thought a lot about it and researched really well. I think the most important factor to switch is the lenses, and I totally agree on this. Canon should have allowed Sigma and Tamron to create RF lenses. That's their loss. Also, I think that you have experienced how lightweight the Sony a7C is, providing such amazing quality! Something you should also look into, is the Sigma "I" series lenses for travel and video. They are extremely sharp from f2, amazing build quality, and very compact. I own the 35mm and I will get the 20mm, naybe the new 50mm as well. Sigma lenses are amazing, especially the new ones are very sharp with great colours and other features. That's not the only problem. Canon releases just compromised bodies in order to make the users to buy the next body, etc. Every release has a major flaw. I really don't like the bodies.
On the other hand, in general you buy a system around the lenses, not around the bodies. The lenses will keep a life time, while the bodies may get better.
However! I can't discount the fact that the RF system is probably the best right now and even the competitors have similar prices on top lenses.
But not having the sigma as the Sony is a bugger. The Sigma 35mm f/1.2 is absolute madness and a must. Canon didnt even release the RF 35/1.2 yet!!! Then Sony has also the Sigma 85mm f/1.2, which is best for the buck. Personally I don't like cheap glass unless has some vintage features, but Sigma and Tamron are a very good solution for a lot of people who don't want to be necessarily pros.

I don't really care about video, so never noticed any IBIS wobble. I think you might find that that wobble is tied to the lens in question that you were using at the time.
If you're going on safari, then invest in a long super telephoto lens (500f4 etc) and say, a 70-200 zoom.
The A7RV is indeed a fine camera and yes, RF glass is exorbitant and the lack of 3rd party lens on the Canon RF system is indeed abyssmal. Plus, Canon's behaviour has, imho, been anti-competitive and monpolistic. I don't buy the "we need to protect our IP" BS. Canon and others should NEVER have been allowed to patent software based solutions, that are in fact, based on mathematics, which itself is not patentable. I am too invested in Canon glass to change, otherwise I'd have went with the A1 and 200-600 rather than my current R3 and 500f4 mark 1.

      - Sony 16-35 f/4 G lens - extremely light lens, high quality (good for landscapes, architecture etc) - 1.350 euro
      - Sony 20-70 f/4 G - unique lens, goes from 20 to 70, though a bit pricy - 1600 euros
      - Tamron 35-150 f/2-2.8 - the "all in one" lens, perfect for weddings and all around beast, although a bit heavy - 1800 euro (Note: Saymang released al almost identical lens that's way cheaper, but the jury's still out on that one)
With the top 3 picks you can do about everything (portraits, video, landscape) without breaking bank. I haven't even mentioned the GM lenses since they're a bit more expensive.
      Best of luck, Laura!

Hi Laura, I got an R6ii 2 months ago because I came from Canon and have a few EF lenses, and the R6 seemed to be the best option at the price point. I then got the RF 24-70 and now I'm struggling with the size. I came from the T7i before, but I want full frame for better low light and 4K60. The R6 is not too big per se for regular photos and straight on videos, but it would be heavy if I were to point it at myself and vlog. And regardless of how I'm shooting, whether photo or video, it draws a lot of attention and I hate getting attention, especially when doing video. I wish I had chosen Sony simply because of the size of the body and the smaller size lenses. Is it hard to switch systems? Or should I get over it and stick with it for a while? The camera itself is great and the quality is good, and my use case doesn't really encounter too much overheating. I don't have any IBIS wobble. But I am like you, I want to travel more. I'm not a full time traveler, but I want to have minimalist gear, including even my personal items. 1 Camera, 1 lens, 4K60, good low light... What do you think?

IMHO stick to R6ii its a great camera. If you switch and you find Sony Sucks you will go back again to Canon. Rememberm Camera is just a tool.

Right? I resisted the switch for so long. Canon is all I used for 14 years. But so disappointed with their choices... It's like they don't want to help us grow as a photographer or content creators. They keep making it more difficult and more expensive... 😓

Bravo amazing video @lauraBC ! I am a Canon guy been with Canon for 10 years now but honestly I am sick of the price of their Great/pro lenses. I had a Canon 6D for 10 years, wanted an upgrade, tried a Canon R8, fantastic mind-blowing camera, autofocus is a monster, but only one or 2 cheap lenses are amazing for the price the 50mm F1.8 STM but then what ??? then the RF85mm F2 IS is 1.5x the price of most equiv Sony 85mm, now the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS is sharp clinical but the bokeh is almost boring or dull. So I am left wondering what is better then you get the Canon RF 35mm at a whopping 1300 USD about 2x the price of any great sony Mount 35mm !!! And I am like what wait a minute why should blow up my budget or having to use almost sub standard quality lenses compared to Equiv Sony mount ???
    e.g.
    #35mm Canon RF vs Sony E mount 4x price factor: Samyang 35mm F1.4 E Mount : 440 USD ! vs Canon RF 35mm F1.4 3x that 1500 USD !!!! this is madness !
#85mm Canon RF vs Sony E mount 4x price factor: Sony 85mm F1.8 600 USD vs Canon RF f1.2 another whopping 2500 USD !!!
#50mm Canon RF vs Sony E mount THE EXCEPTION same price ! Sony 50mm F1.8 250 USD vs Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM 250USD (now thats a great lens for the price but the ONLY ONE in the RF range !)
I am so torn because I love the RF cameras, and the lenses when you have them in hand, I have EF lenses, Canon Flashes, Canon flash triggers, etc. All Canon but other than than when I see the sharpness and Bokeh quality time and again with friends owning Sonys E mount cams and videos like this times and times again. I just want to go : but why Canon ? Why ? The R8 R6 etc are absolutely AMAZING cameras, and especially the R8 is extremely well priced but then if wanting to use top quality primes and even worse for their 24-70 F2.8 zoom, this is just 2x, 2.5x sometimes up to 3x the price of the equivalent range and quality lenses on the Sony mount.
I also love the skin tones of Canon and would never want to swap to any other brand for that reason too, such natural rendering out of the box, out of those jpegs even, but really can I justify Canon's legendary skin tones for paying pretty much every time 2x or more the price for lenses, and otherwise, revert to using old EF lenses which are great but not as tack sharp and modern as the RF range.
    I am really in dismay.

Yep! You can adapt EF lenses onto the RF bodies. My Sigmas work perfectly on my R6MKII. Most pros swear by the Canon. L glass. Don’t get the RF (L) glass, adapt the EF lenses.
      Best of luck to her

Let me be clear, Canon and Nikon have excellent cameras. Over the last decade I have had the opportunity to work with so many excellent photographers who have shot or both of those systems. Canon has put itself in a very difficult box by not allowing third parties to develop lenses for their mirrorless system. Let's just think about all of the many options that are available on Sony for a 50 mm lens. And they have options that are great quality at almost every price point. There are very unique lenses that have never been made by Sony that are offered by third parties My favorite is the Tamron 35-150mm. It is my hope that Cannon will reverse course on this.
