Loved those dirt bike mag’s back in the day! People nowadays, don’t realize how back in those days that was our only source of information were those magazines we didn’t have Internet and it wasn’t really covered on TV so those magazines I loved them!

Yep!- Respect to S.H. And his original Moutsache many champs twirled for luck.
Still riding at 60 because of S.H"s words and that Wolfman Webb & Dirt Rider mag- i used to pay the newspaper shop to order from The U.S. with my pocket money as a shoolkid!- He made it seem to me everyone in the U.S. went on a dirt bike on Sundays.
Everyone seems to serious today. I still use old worn out Airtex shirts and mismatching gear to piss of the young dudes & dudesses.

Thanks for saving the books and mags, creating the Kaplan Moto Archives. I started racing scrambles in 68 then MX in 1970. We somehow made happen working at a motorcycle shop for near minimum wage. Bike, mods, travel to out of state races.
When On Any Sunday came to our local theater the theater owner invited all the local racers to display our race bikes in the lobby.

In July 1971, I picked up a copy of this new magazine by the name of Dirt Bike at the local pharmacy (which doesn't exist anymore). I was a few days away from turning 15 years. It was the June issue and the next issue was the August issue - the only time they skipped a mass print as far as I know. Rick was the heart of the magazine, although many other editors followed and later he came back - and left again. Any avid off roader could follow him on the several other publications he edited.
God bless this very special and uniquely entertaining man. An icon for all us off-roading bikers!

I used to go with my mom food shopping many times because she bribed me with buying a motorcycle magazine which meant a Dirt Bike Magazine. Early 1970s, I'd just bought my first dirt bike, a Yamaha MX125 in Barstow, CA. Between riding and working, I read Super Hunky's informative and, humorous writings in Dirt Bike magazine. A funny line I remember from him was about a test they did on the way underpowered Honda 4stroke 125 dirt bike at the time. I'll have to paraphrase because it was so long ago, but it went something like this...."the power was so awesome, it could do power 'L's in the dirt with ease." (In other words, the Honda didn't have enough horsepower to do a power 'slide'.) This was accompanied with the photo of the Honda kicking up a little dirt causing a letter 'L' in the dirt.
Super Hunky....an Icon. Rest easy, 'ol sod. You left your mark.
Praying you're at peace with the Lord now. (Hebrews 9:27-28),

Thank you for doing this. Super Hunky, Motocross, and Desert was a big part of my childhood. I went to see On Any Sunday, as a kid and after that, I was hooked. All I could think about were dirt bikes. I relentlessly bugged my Dad about it and after doing some horse trading and giving over my savings, I wrangled a non-running Yamaha 60 from a friend at school. I was 10. I learned a lot about maintenance and care, and a little later some fabrication as I got a friend's dad who built experimental aircraft to help me lay the shocks down. My Dad finally gave in a bought me an XR 75. I saved up for a PK pipe for it and began irritating the neighbors. It only went on from there. Living up against the San Gabriel Mountains, I could go riding any time I wanted right from my parent's house. My friends and I lived and breathed dirt bikes. I almost didn't graduate from High School, because all I cared about was wrenching and riding... Priorities.

When I was 14 years old, I was waiting for my father to finish his business in our local drugstore. I was cruising the magazine rack and I spotted it, Dirt Bike. I was looking at a magazine that was all about dirt bikes, I couldn’t believe it. I read that issue cover to cover a couple of times. I had every issue of Dirt Bike for the first 5 years of publication. What I remember most, is “from the saddle”. Rick Sieman was informative but the reason I read “from the saddle”, before anything else, was because of how entertaining he was. Rest In Peace Rick and don’t pay attention to the other riders chanting Maico-breako.

Great memorial! I remember reading Dirt Bike Magazine cover to cover as soon as it hit the mail box every month, starting with his articles. He had a great sense of humor. He'll be missed...

The world is emptier without Mr.Know it all.
Kinda ironic i just asked you about how many DB mags you have, and this vid goes into depth on your collection story..loved it @!

Thank you for this Ken Sr I will miss Super Hunky, I have the issue of dirt bike magazine with his section from July 1974 and on page 6 and in bold letters it said: "DON'T EAT YELLOW SNOW" He had a great sense of humor, he will be missed greatly, I actually suggested this vid to be made, but I know he is important to you so I knew you would make this.

Monkeybutt is one of my favorite books. Over the years, I've given copies to friends for 🎄 Christmas.

I am absolutely gutted… Rick was my literary idol when I was a kid… From the Saddle was my go-to every month. I am so honored, and glad, I got to work with Rick a few years back. He and I spent hundreds of hours scanning old Dirt Bike and Popular Cycling magazines. I even helped with the editing of his book entitled, “The Last Ride” - even got a “special thanks” credit in the book. I have kept all the emails we sent back and forth to each other - gotta be at least 100-200 total… what is sad, is that I was reading the closing chapter to his book, “Getting Old and How to Deal With It” about the time of his passing… RIP Super Hunky!
