    Given how at the time Trails in the Sky released in the west, we were FIVE Trails games behind and who knows how many Ys games... The fact that even if only for a few months, we will be ONE Trails game behind and only 2 Falcom games behind total is a good reason to be happy. Not even Nayuta left behind. Let us not forget the gargantuan effort over the past 10-15 years it took to get here.

    I sent Xseed an e-mail message asking them when they were going to put their Falcom games on the Switch. The response: "Unfortunately, we don't have the capability of taking on a huge undertaking like that, but if Falcom were to ever create the Switch ports themselves, we would love an opportunity to work on them."

      Yeah, I'm not sure about his assertion that xseed and falcom have a bad relationship.
      From what i understood..Nisa just out bid xseed for the rights. XSeed wanted to localize but couldn't match Nisa in money offered

  • @millasgameroom
    @millasgameroom 10 месяцев назад +9

    12:21 Regarding XSEED and Falcom localised titles, another possibility is that Falcom owns the translations that localisers produce for their works,. This happens with other companies. It really depends on the exact terms of publishing contracts (which varies with each title, whether it's ports, scripts or voiceovers, even between the same parties on different contracts, licensing can be a huge nightmare). Only XSEED and Falcom really know what's going on and they'll likely never discuss it publically. All we can do as outsiders is speculate and help people realise localisation is a lot more nuanced than the "XSEED own the rights in the West" blanket statements you often see online.

    • @CommRio
      @CommRio  10 месяцев назад +5

      It really is very opaque, I wish I could ask industry professionals but they probably couldn't tell me even if they knew. The one thing that makes me lean towards XSeed owning them though is that I think if Falcom owned them they would have stepped in and asked a company to port them already.

    • @millasgameroom
      @millasgameroom 10 месяцев назад

      @@CommRio if a reputable journalist like Jason Schreier was to investigate and interview people in the know (while keeping them anonymous), we'd likely get answers. That said, Trails is such a small, niche franchise that this is unlikely to happen.
      Regarding ports, Falcom have been moving towards making their own ports (especially for Switch), so I reckon they want to put the Sky trilogy themselves once they have the resources. Whether they own the translations or not may be completely irrelevant here.

    Great video!
    A couple things to note:
    1) XSEED’s most recent Falcom release was actually the PS4 version of Ys Memories of Celceta which originally came out in Japan in 2019 and then released in the west in 2020, it doesn’t make that much of a difference timeline wise but when considering that plus the Felghana Switch port was the next Falcom developed port for a game XSEED localized after Celceta PS4 and it hasn’t even been a year since that port’s release, I would say we still have a little more time before I start to worry about XSEED’s willingness with future Falcom ports.
    2) the console versions of Ys Origin from DotEmu are actually not completely the same as the XSEED PC version. The script is the same but the other localized things like the area name cards that flash on the top of the screen seem to be from the Japanese version (they have English name for the areas underneath the Japanese names so you still know what things are called) that makes me wonder if Falcom has the rights to the English scripts for their games but not the rights to English graphical elements that might’ve been made and added in by XSEED themselves. Obviously that’s just speculation from comparing the PS4 and PC versions of a single game but since they were released by 2 different companies, it makes me think.
    Like you I find this topic interesting and fun to speculate about even if realistically we will likely never know the ins and outs of how Falcom localizations happen. Here’s hoping we’re in a better place in the next few years, the pieces have certainly fallen into place for that to at least be a possibility which is kinda wild to say.

      I feel like having a little bit of time to let things percolate between games and play other things is essential to avoiding burnout. Unless we're dealing with cliffhanger endings. @@dragonmaster1500 funny you should mention cliffhangers: I actually started with CS1 as one of those fans who discovered the series on a whim via Steam, and I have yet to play 2. I decided to trek back to the beginning with Sky FC and I was essentially alternating between dev studios for the rest of that year (2021), having played all kinds of JRPGs, from FF6 to Atelier Ryza and Persona 4, all for the first time. What do you know? It's somehow already been 3 years since I started CS1 and I've since convinced at least 7 online friends to give this series a try too.
      Despite being deflated by some spoilers of CS2's plot along the way and not being as big a fan of Sky FC and SC as many of the die-hard Trails lovers, I don't regret going back and playing these games in release order, especially not skipping over Crossbell.

Considering how there have been multiple statements and reports that Falcom releases for NISA have been some of if not the biggest contributor to their profits the last several years, I think it's safe to say they are likely at the top of their priority list outside of maybe NIS's own games and IPs. I think the biggest wildcard are the XSEED and Aksys Falcom games that have been ported to Switch and if XSEED and Aksys will work on them or if there is hangup in regards to the English rights for those titles.

    Nevermind the new titles and the possibility of a new Tokyo Xanadu game, if they are in remake mood, aside from the missing link from the Ys series (Kefin), there's also the Gagharv trilogy, which does deserve a proper remake with all the juicy systems that Falcom has created in recent years.
    Can you imagine that poor trilogy done properly?

    I think this is Falcom's issue. I gotta give NISA credit for once: their output has been consistent over the past few years. A game every year since 2019 is very impressive. Problem is, despite all the releases in the past few years, still being nearly 3 games behind Japan is unforgivable in the current gaming landscape, and the fact that it's unique to Falcom tells the bigger picture, I think.
    This is on Falcom. Something more substantial needs to change with them. Something akin to an in-house localization team or Falcom being more cooperative with the western localization companies, i.e: handing over the script quicker, for instance.
    It's indicative of how Falcom views the west as a whole: an afterthought. There's no english line of communication with them, and that's despite us being a fairly decent portion of their overall revenue, with the JP market inversely proportionate.
    I think with Kato as the majority shareholder, despite Kondo in the president's seat, we'll never see them truly be ambitious, take risks and rethink their priorities to be more in line with the current gaming setting.
    Hope I'm wrong xD

      It used to be MUCH worse NISA butchered Ar Tonellico 2 so much and cut a bunch of the Japanese voices to fit the English voices.
      Idea Factory/Complie Heart had a massive falling out with them over stuff like this.
      Like creating bugs and glitches in Mugen Souls not in the Japanese version. Censoring CGs in multiple games stating "we found it distasteful and thought you wouldn't like it either"
      Adding jokes to Neptunia that would literally be out of character, a glitch that would cause the leader board to crash in Neptunia 1 and DLC causing freezing issues in Neptunia Victory.
      In Fairy Fencer F changing Alyn to Eryn because "I didn't like how it sounded".
      Also if you know some rudimentary Japanese you know that what they are saying in Japanese vs English in Ar Tonellico Qoga is nowhere near similar.
      But NISA has to be more careful with NIS games right? Yeah the Vita and PSP versions of Disgaea 2-4,Disgaea D2 and Rhapsody DS were butchered as well with glitches,freezing and DLC that would prevent you from getting 100% if you bought them one by one...but not if you bought the DLC in a bundle.
      For anyone wondering why Trails fans were so worried, it's not just that XSEED was go good, NISA is just so bad.

    My personal opinion at this point is: They release when they release. I am fine with waiting. I have been binging through the series in the past 2 years and change (started in October of 2021) and am only now playing through CS4 (admittedly, a second time. I originally started with Cold Steel 1 in 2019 and played through Cold Steel 4, then decided to redo the whole thing when they announced the Crossbell localizations were a thing.)
    So as far as i am concerned i still have half of CS4, Reverie and potentially Nayuta to go, and by the time i finish those Daybreak will have probably alrd released. So i can play that too.
    And then i have 3838292 other games in my backlog to play until they get to Daybreak 2.
    If i had the choice, i would prefer faster or even simultaneous western releases for Falcom as well. No doubt. But it's not enough of a problem for me to throw a tantrum over the wait time or resort to fantranslations (if people wanna use them, that's fine by me tho).
    As far as NISA goes, they have their problems but being too slow isn't one of them. If anything they're cleaning up the back catalog that Xseed left behind for them pretty decently. I can believe that by 2027, maybe we'll actually be only one game behind and the gap will be a year or 18 months instead of 3.
    It will never be less than that though unless Falcom starts handing the scripts over to NISA earlier. As it stands i think it has been said that happens around 6 months after the Japanese release, meaning NISA start work with a 6 month delay right out of the gate. So unless Falcom changes that policy, we will never be nearly as fast as other companies, let alone get to a simultaneous release. I can only hope they understand the way Trails is headed (declining sales in Japan, more and more revenue coming from the West) and understand handing the script over earlier is something they will have to do if they want to stay afloat as a company.

    • @CommRio
      @CommRio  10 месяцев назад +3

      I agree with pretty much everything you said. While in the past I heard the 6 month figure too, I do believe that there was a shift on Falcom's end to give over the script closer to Japanese release. Obviously the West needs to make significant progress for us to properly see if that would make a big difference, but Falcom taking even one step towards helping out the West is progress.

    Excellent video. I have three thoughts:
    First, any discussion of Falcom games being localized to the west must include the phrase "getting over the barrier". There was a law passed in the Crossbell Diet to that effect, and failure to include the phrase will get said discussion disapproved by Lloyd Bannings. So, good job on making sure your video passes that legal bar.
    Second, I also appreciate that you said anything Kondo-san says about trails should be taken with a pillar of salt. This is trails; you need a lot more than a grain of salt here. You need enough salt to qualify as a "premature gift from the Goddess"; a pillar is clearly the correct unit of measure in this situation.
    Third, companies exist to make money. Xseed already has all the scripts for the sky trilogy complete. A new port, done by another localizer, using Xseed's scripts, is free money for Xseed for work they have already done. It's pure revenue, with no costs; no company that wants to stay in business passes on that. The only question is: how much money is enough money to convince Xseed to sign on the dotted line? Xseed deserves to be fairly compensated for their work. The more demand for ports of the Sky trilogy increases in the west, the more money three is in the project, and the more likely an arrangement can be made. Pride and organizational slights have to be worked through in the world of business.
    In the end, Falcom games are worth it for me, so I'm willing to wait as long as it takes. How will all of this get resolved and when will the west finally catch up to Japan?
    As they say in Zemuria: only the goddess knows for sure.

    Nice to see a level-headed take on the localization process for the series. And NISA was a little more aggressive this year than you were expecting. Getting 2 releases this year will definitely help the catch up process. I'm curious about who will localize Tokyo Xanadu 2, will Falcom let Aksys have right of first refusal or will NISA take over?

      I hope it's Aksys to be honest, that way NISA could focus on Daybreak 2 and later on Kai. Daybreak 2 might drop next year, and I believe there won't be a new Kiseki/Trails game released next year... so we'd just be 1 game behind - Kai - and it would probably drop in 2026.

    Thank God I can read Chinese so I'm able to play most Falcom games on day one or a couple months later at most. The main thing causing western delays seems to be the dub, which Chinese and Korean players don't seem to care about, as I've never heard any non-English speaker wishing there were dubs in their languages. As a result, they're able to enioy Trails and Ys games the same way we do Atelier games.

  • @SupriceSupplies
    @SupriceSupplies 10 месяцев назад

    To add my two cents on the XSEED situation, there could be other potential factors at play here in regards to Oath in Felghana and CS1/2 that weren't mentioned:
    For Oath in Felghana, that is price. Oath in Felghana's DEFAULT price on Steam in 12 euros. If XSEED wanted to bring it over, there'd be a LOT of debate if they sold it at a significantly higher price than that, even when taking additions and changes into account, and I highly doubt that Falcom's interested at matching the existing prices. I suspect other Pre-Lacrimosa Ys titles will face the same issues, and the Sky Trilogy, too. Aksys got lucky, as the (VERY) recently announced Tokyo Xanadu eX+ managed to avoid this, since it's still sitting at a comfortable 55 euros on steam. If there's no realistic possibility of making good cash on it, why would XSEED bother?
    For the Eastern half of the Erebonia Arc, it's Clouded Leopard Entertainment. In most cases, they'd be a non-issue. Not so much for CS1/2, however. The fact that they're the ones who made the JAPANESE switch ports of CS1/2 on top of the chinese and korean ones has potentially added legal issues that other switch ports such as Nayuta, Tokyo Xanadu, and technically Oath in Felghana don't have to face. We don't know anything about the specifics of the agreements made between Falcom and CLE, but I wouldn't be surprised if those were at the core of it all.
    With all that out of the way, I really enjoyed the video! I'm personally also optimistic about potential multiple major releases in a year. After all, Cold Steel 4 and Ys IX came out within a mere 4 months of eachother, as I recall? Makes me inclined to believe that Ys and Trails loc work are (mostly) independent from eachother, but that's simply speculation on my end.

Xseed localization did seems to take liberty to the script and insert real life references to the games, while NISA confirmed to have change stuffs for censorship. I do think something need to be done to prevent mistranslation and bad localization, since this is an ongoing series with big overarching narrative and world-building.

    Ys V did get a 3D remake on the PS2, so frankly it needs a localized port (it's quite good and is faithful to the SNES original, just more fleshed out and on the challenge level of Expert). It'd be a proper service to Ys players for it to get localized, IF it is considered canon enough despite Taito publishing it. And I know it probably won't happen, but Ys IV: Mask of the Sun - A New Theory, which was a PS2 remake of Ys IV: Mask of the Sun, would be a nice port as well. Granted, it's not considered canon, so slim chance. Not a bad game though and mostly faithful to the original, just in 3D.
    One can still remain hopeful, right?

    As a PC player I haven't the slightest problem playing all of the Falcom games that have been released in the West on the same modern system. What's the deal with new consoles always being incompatible with the games you already own? I mean I love my classic consoles, but how many am I supposed to fit into my room if I need a new one for every new generation of games? I feel like building(and occasionally upgrading) my PC was a better investment in the long run. And I think consoles are already on the way out, since most of the new ones except Nintendo are just heavily locked down PCs anyway and everything else is turning to mobile. So they won't need to do many ports anymore in the future and can concentrate more on localising.

      For Trails it has solid turn based battles but the main draw is something no other series can offer. The sheer amount of interconnected worldbuilding and intricate character writing is unmatched.
      As for Ys it is a classic action RPG series that began all the way back in the late 80's and early 90's and was a defining RPG back in the day. Nowadays it's the smooth action combat plus the stellar music that keeps it in the minds of others. In recent entires the stories have also taken more of a focus in a good way.

    a topic that appears once in a while lately, with falcom lacking western releases, in the communities is the question on how AI, DeepL and the likes could provide Nihon Falcom with a method to release basic translations for rather cheap. there's the obvious trashy translation work in the original english release of Ys8 with some elements being rather bad, yet it still was released as is. and the community project for the crossbell arc als had been used as reference, so it's actually a pretty interesting topic, though whether any sort of translation AI might be able to encompass the whole world building, including it correctly without adding too many flaws stands to reason against it.
    there's even ai for voices, both the classic vocaloid comes to mind, but also some other projects dealing with those, could come in handy. though i'm absolutely clueless in terms of liscensing those tools and products for a game.
