I was always annoyed that Viz only released the Full Color editions for the Saiyan and Freeza saga's in English. They are available in full color for the full series in most other languages, but somehow not in English.... So I took matters into my own hands. I downloaded all of the digital full color mangas of all the other saga's in English (Boyhood saga, Demon Piccolo, Android/ Cell and Majin Buu) And had them all professionally printed into volumes at an online copyshop. I had two volumes printed every month and have been doing so for over a year. I am going by the Kanzenban chapter orders with these. Needless to say they look just like they came from an official publisher! Very happy with them! I will post a video on my collection once it's complete (only 4 more majin buu saga volumes to go and I have the whole series in color complete!)

Amazing comparison! This is gonna help a lot of people.
I'm very happy you mentioned the censorship aspect. It's very sad and unacceptable imo that Viz have not released a fully uncensored version of the Dragon Ball manga in English, I find it insulting to the original creator and to the fans. This type of weird unnecessary censorship is one of the main reasons why I collect manga in Japanese only, I don't want to support English publishers when they make such choices, and this is Dragon Ball we're talking about here, not some weird obscure forgotten manga, it is what it is.
I've mentioned before that I haven't had the chance to get into DB yet, but I'm looking forward to reading it! If I ever collect the manga I'll either go with the regular Japanese tankobons or the beautiful Kanzenbans.

From what I can gather, they ended up having to censor them due to parents complaining and threatening to sue them if they didn't censor bulmas boobies and Gokus Weiner.
I don't mind the regular volume being censored. Gotta do what you gotta do but if I'm paying for a colored version or a vizbig, I want the original unedited, uncensored version. I'm an adult, I'm not going to faint if I see Gokus penis!

    • @kalevipoeg6916
      @kalevipoeg6916 4 месяца назад +1

Agreed. Some people don't get it, and think "you just want to see boobs and blood, it's not necessary" - they're missing the point. The point is that an artist's original work should NEVER be censored for sensitivities of some western audience who live in bubbles and can't handle either of the above like adults without losing their minds. I don't care if it's nudity, blood, or the whole HFIL / Mr. Satan/Hercule thing - if you cannot show it in its entirety, uncensored, then you should not be showing it at all. That's my mindset. This is Akira Toriyama's work (RIP, Toriyama-sensei) and now more than EVER I'm concerned about his work being watered down by western agents. I want every line exactly as he drew it - exactly as he intended - with not one single change aside from translation. If I can't get that in English, I'd rather go through the trouble of learning Japanese - not just for Dragonball, but for ALL Japanese content that either doesn't get brought over to the west or is censored by the west. I taught myself Mandarin Chinese, so it wouldn't be the first time I've learned a language.
You know it's funny, 10 years ago I went to Japan and I could SWEAR I bought a volume of Dragonball while in Tokyo. I either did or I picked it up and almost bought it - if I have it, it's in a box in storage somewhere - but I don't remember at all if I actually pulled the trigger on the purchase or not. I also recall seeing a shirt in Tokyo of dead Yamcha in a crater, and THAT one I should have bought.

@@kalevipoeg6916 I don't mind if there's a censored version out there so parents don't go apeshit that their little tykes saw Gokus Weiner or Bulmas boobs, but can we at least get one edition where there are no edits, no watered down dialogue and presented exactly as it was always supposed to be presented?
I'm an adult, I would like to read the comic as it was intended to be read.

I've been buying the manga the past few months and reading them and I was buying the full color manga, which doesn't end cleanly into a next volume. If you buy the full color manga and aren't just a collector and are actively reading you'll need to buy volume 12 if the singles afterwards since the last full color manga ends part way through 12. From that point you can continue on into the next part of whatever method you choose to take, which in my case I went with the vizbigs so volume 5 of the vizbigs.

After spending some time with large-format, full-color English comics recently, that Full Color edition is looking really nice. I did a comparison, and the 8 Full Color books cover DBZ volumes 1-11 (and a few chapters of volume 12). That's about 43 percent of the DBZ saga, and I think that's a great start. There is one negative: It appears the introductory material (such as character bio's and summary of story) that is at the start of the normal manga volumes does NOT appear at the front of the Full Color volumes. I'm not sure it's included at all!

A thoroughly researched comparison, I appreciate your attention to detail. Nicely done.
I’m collecting the 3 in 1’s because they are most comfortable to read. Poor quality paper is an accurate description, but it gives a retro feel and I enjoy the flexibility and lightness of it. The digitized color editions don’t do anything for me, and the original color pages in the Viz Big, with the watercolor-esque, copic marker aesthetic, are lovely, but too many drawbacks as you stated with the censorship.

Tinfoil hat time: I wonder if the licensing issue is just an excuse, and the full color editions not being released in English has more to do with the original translator being arrested on some pretty heinous charges. The last release of the full color manga was in January 2017, less than a month after he was arrested and days before he was formally charged. Maybe Viz wants a new translation before any further release of the original Dragon Ball manga? I mean, I sure as hell would.

And there's the occasional chapters that have the limited color pages intact, but then are missing the pages with full color at the beginning of the chapter (example: chapter 44).

I've been trying to figure out the differences for hours now, and then I find this. Incredible video. Still super torn between the individual volumes and the vizbigs. The color pages and the grammatical corrections are pretty nice, but I love the idea of the "most true to original."

That synopsis was as precise as a Stanley Kubrick production 😂. So I bought Dragonball and Dragonball Z in the summer of 20 at the height of corona I paid $300 each on eBay oh well now they’re back in stock . I will have to get the VizBigs I love the perfect size and it’s like losing a child when I have to cut open shrink wrap from any new graphic novel or box set 😂

I have collected the German version when I grew up, but since they‘re 25 years old and the translations are really dated (removing Dr. Slump references for instance since the Manga hadn’t been released in Germany), I felt the Vizbigs were an appropriate update. I can take some mild censorship (considering the German version wasn‘t) in exchange for a more accurate translation, better paper quality a bigger format and most importantly a restoration of most of the color pages. In an ideal world, there wouldn’t be any censorship and all the color pages as well as the „new“ Kanzenban ending of almost 20 years now. Maybe even a companion volume that includes Jaco the Galactic Patrolman and Neko Majin.

This is the only series I split between two editions. I have Z in Vizbig and Dragon Ball in 3-in-1 since it’s the most affordable and I don’t mind Z’s censorship where a lot of Dragon Ball’s humor/charm kinda gets stunted by it. The downside is my inner ocd hates that the last 3-in-1 overlaps with the first vizbig

I was really divided with this one. I usually collect manga in 3 in 1 editions so it was between the 3 in 1s or the Vizbigs. I love the colored pages included in the Vizbigs, however I also don't like when some series get censored heavily. I think I'm going with the 3 in 1s, as they're not only cheaper, but overall more portable to me, and they're also not heavily censored. I don't mind the thin pages or print quality, but I did notice the color pages grey scaled in the singles looked darker than the 3 in 1s, so that did bother me. So, yeah, 3 in 1s it is.

I was about to be super upset about the censorship for the vizbigs, mostly cause I already bought a couple and was planning on collecting the entire series through them so it's a bit late to make a switch. But if you look at it this way it's essentially just the more anime accurate version. If you grew up watching the show and still to this day love it and don't mind the censorship you've already seen there, really the vizbigs are the same experience you would be getting watching the show. I of course still prefer least censored regardless but it depends on how you look at it.

I used to collect the ‘Ultimate Editions’ of Dragonball in Dutch, which contain the color pages, have great quality paper and print, aren’t censored as much and even have annotations in the margins which explain certain cultural aspects of the manga (pretty much the most ideal version). Then the publisher Glénat decided to end Dragonball before the Saiyan saga (so basically, only the Dragonball part, not Z), whereas they did do the complete series in the French version. Glénat used to pull that stuff a lot, starting a series for the Dutch-speaking audience and then quitting after 13-14 volumes, leaving the story incomplete. They did the same for One Piece ending at volume 15, whereas the French version still goes very strong.
So not having the full series has always frustrated me, even if DBZ is my least favourite part of the series (after the Frieza saga) and I’m looking for a new version to collect and I already kinda landed on the box sets. It’s nice to see you recommend that one as well (I have the One Piece box sets so I’m aware of the great manufacturing quality, but it is nice to see it’s also the least censored version)!

I've got all the full colour so far, and all the paper back, I did have a few of the graphic novels but I tossed them because I thought they where the same as the paper backs beside being a odd size, so I filled in the one I already had collected, I've just started the Viz big, but I'm thinking I'll just skip the 3n1s, but back to the full colour man I really wish they finish the cell saga it has a ending, what do you think about the super manga, do you think we will get vizbig or 3n1s of them? Lastly thank you for letting me know what the difference between them very helpful.

Just wanted to point out an error, respectfully… the 3 in 1s are the least censored version. Less censored than the single releases. The video makes it seem like the 3 in 1s and the singles are at the same level of censorship, but they’re not.

Smaller volumes with dust jackets, but completely uncensored, with the art in glorious colour.
It also collects the whole thing.
