Stevie Wonder single-handedly made the clavinet the hippest sound on the planet. He made it so hip, that people cant help but play black music on the thing. The earliest german demos of the clavinet were of classical music being played on it as it was billed as an electrified clavichord.
Excellent video, David! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I am a Hammond/Leslie guy, but recently acquired a Honer Clavinet Pianet Duo. It seems to be in pretty good shape with the exception of all the rubber hammers missing from the clav section. If you would be so kind as to guide me in the direction to get parts. I would be extremely grateful. Thank you, Michael
I installed the new Vibanet preamp correctly but am still only getting one sound (two at most)from the selector switch. Now I'm trying to find info on pickup repair. The lower pick-up had no continuity on one of the segments. I soldered a tiny piece of wire to the wire exposed on the side of that segment and the other end of the wire soldered directly to the pickup segment. I now have continuity but have no idea how it's going to sound yet. (I'm about to install the Gel and restring.) The upper pick-up has no continuity between ANY of the segments. I'm hoping I can repair it. Any info you can share is greatly appreciated. Ps Love your playing!
The pick-ups are notoriously fragile and difficult to repair. If you look around online you'll see that original clavinet pickups almost ALL develop hairline cracks near their mounting hole. Good luck trying to repair it, but you may have to purchase new pickups, if you are certain about no continuity. Do you still have the old preamp, switches and cheekblock? If you are in Canada I might be interested in taking them off your hands.
It's crazy what some people will half ass, even when the thing barely works in the end LOL. Thankfully I haven't seen anything this botched hit my bench yet. Well maybe this one Vox Jaguar I had, but at least that worked in the end haha
DR strings through Vintage Vibe. They have since changed their supplier, so when I get a chance to try out the new Mapes strings I'll report on what I notice. But I might also caution against judging the strings' quality through an iPhone mic on a youtube video.
Excellent work! Sounds awesome! I work in a repair shop for a live sound company and I need to restring at least 1 broken string, and potentially the upper-most octave (strings look rusty/corroded). I just found your channel and I am going to check out some of your other videos. I was wondering: Do you have any recommendations for a Knowledge Base where I could learn the process for restringing individual strings, tips and tricks, things to avoid, etc? We used to send all of ours out to a specialist, but they recently went out of business and I am handling the repairs moving forward.
Thanks! Sorry I don't have more content, the repair stuff is really just my side-hustle! There are some facebook communities that have good info, and over at ep-forum.com there are several years of good threads. The trick for replacing an individual string is to use a little cocktail straw to weave through the yarn, and then push the string through the straw.
Thanks for showing a properly cleaned and revived D6! :) I recently found one, and it's in a pretty bad shape... Upper pickup is missing, as is the dampening system, the preamp PCB is rattling loose in there, some strings broken, and the hammers are all completely worn or broken off. So it'll be a job and a half to get that baby back in working order again ;) Any tips are very welcome!! (I'm in Europe too, so no Radio Shack style shops on this continent)
I dunno. It's like someone did these things wrong intentionally to the instrument, for whatever reason. Anyhow... great video and presentation. Yet another Canadian luthier subscription.
Great explanations camera angles playing...everything AAA. God bless you for sharing another awesome video
Thank you!

Look to Vintage Vibe and clavinet.com for parts. Good luck!

Just….excellent!
Explaining the botches is probably more helpful than vids that try to show you how to do it--without explaining the pitfalls...
Thanks! One often learns the most from mistakes; but it hurts less to learn from someone else's mistakes!

What type of new strings? Seems a little thin sounding.

Excellent wish you could do mine over. Problem I'm in Australia. Great Job.
David, thanks for posting this. It's very helpful as I am hoping to restore a D6 this winter. Your work looks and sounds great.
Thank you! Good luck with your D6!

Hi, how do I get on touch about clav repairs? Thanks !
I'm based in Toronto, but am currently not taking in new repairs. Happy to answer any questions you might have.
So just curious, how much would you charge for a job like this?

Nice video! Good tips as I take on a C in the near future.
Thanks - how's the C job going?
Excellent!!!
Many thanks!
Nice work
Amazing video!!! How did you go about cleaning the keys?
Just a mild soap and water solution and microfibre cloth.
Brilliant Video! Bravo! And thanks!
Many thanks!
