Op.25 no.5 : @ Sharing a reply from another thread, on why 25#5 is so slow! The word "Vivace" is generally associated with "fast" although it more accurately means "lively." I hope my interpretation has life and quirkiness in it, enough to qualify it as "lively." I wanted to choose a tempo that would allow attention to the myriad rhythmic details in the score, particularly how the 2-note motif is expressed differently in almost every single phrase: 2 eighth notes barred together, 6 eighth notes barred together, with and without accents, sixteenth note and dotted eighth in the right hand while the left hand is either rolled chords, single quarter notes (with or without grace notes) or sixteenth/dotted eighth slurred differently, quarter note with grace note, 2 note chord vs 3 note chord, etc. You get the point - if it is too fast, all of those details start to blur. So balancing "lively enough" with "slow enough" seemed to end up here. (Also, the middle section is only "piu lento" so its leisurely unfurling can't be too much of a slow-down from the "Vivace." So many weights and counterweights, and the scales settle down at this particular tempo (on that particular day of recording!!). Thanks for asking!!

This explanation is very good, and the recording even better! I hope one day I can see you perform live. Also would you ever consider recording Liszt's B minor sonata? Your virtuosity and musicality would work with it perfectly in my opinion. These Chopin Etude and your Dante sonata are some of my favorite recordings of all time.

      Frederic,
So true! Michaelangeli's Scarbo is so much better for being slower. Try the young pianist George Harliono; his tempi are so on the mark. Let me take this moment to thank you in general for your artistry. Btw, your rendition of the Rachmaninoff transcription of the Bach Preludium is one of the most loving things I've ever heard.

Ohohohoho, an absolutely fantastic recording of two absolutely fantastic sets of etudes! Also I just love that fact that Chopin's dedication of Op.10 reads "to my friend, Franz Liszt" (sure their relationship had its ups and downs, but they were friends indeed). And to consider that these two actually used to hang out, get drinks together... and for a couple of months Mendelssohn (and Heine!) joined them in Paris for a few shenanigans. I would love to see a joined biopic of them, just focusing on a week or a month of life in Paris in the mid-1830s...

No wonder there are so many great pianists today and greater ones appear every generation! Listen to Seong JIn Cho, Katia Buniatishvili, Yuja Wang, Danil Trifonov, Kate Lui, etc etc etc etc etc. The best way of learning the piano or any musical instrument is by listening and watching superb pianists perform. I think Franz Liszt, Rachmaninoff and other great pianists of the past would be very shocked by and even envious of the players of the 21st century! One last word: Who is this pianist "Chu"? I nearly missed him because of his name! Why is not his full name given? He is absolutely superb!! Simply and just great! Well, not to diminish Liszt's capabilities, but the late John Ogdon can sight-read pieces terrifyingly well. You can hear about anecdotes of him in The Living Pianos channel. A good portion of his studio recordings are sight-read and it includes monstrous pieces from the likes of Scriabin and Sorabji.
