    I had two pieces of paper offering an apprenticeship to become either a millwright or an electrician. At the time, I held a position of labourer/machine operator and had good opportunity to see what each trade did and how machine operation relied on both mechanical and electrical components to function properly. I was quite uncertain which to choose based on that, as both seemed to require a varying (but different) level of expertise to do well at. Before choosing one or the other, I spoke to Journeyman of each trade at my place of employment. The deciding factor was having over a dozen certified Millwrights telling me to become an Electrician. The old timers told me that while their trade was interesting and fulfilling, it had destroyed their bodies (with many scars, broken bones and other workplace injuries to emphasize their stories). I chose to heed their words and become a certified Electrician. They continue to have my respect for the shit they have to deal with day in and day out, but I'd much rather be responsible for automated machine control than have to destroy my body fixing it when that machine breaks in half.

    • @johnverney
      @johnverney Год назад +6

      I'm a millwright and although I suggest to young folks to become an electrician , it's not due to wear and tear on the body but rather job opportunities. I can build or rebuild anything on an automobile, including electrical. Not too many electricians can say that.

    In 2021 very few industrial trades people aren't well versed in multiple skills(trades). Industrial electricians and Industrial Mechanics (millwright) build and maintain the same equipment albeit different aspects. I love working with our electricians and they love helping us millwrights out. We bounce ideas and knowledge off of each other and are part of a bigger team. Having multiple trades work together and share workload and ideas is the best way to keep your plants and team doing its job and happy. Happy machines happy workers happy life. And yes we joke around about which trade is god but at the end of the day we're all workers pulling a wage for a company that would replace us as fast as we can say covid. ;)

    As a retired sparky got a kick out of this. As an apprentice had to help our 2 great millwright mechanics some times. Taught me the proper way of using tools. Neither.one owned or used what they called a nut rounder ( adjustable wrench ). Hate to admit it but a few times we we tied up they wired in motors and did a great job. Millwrights probably the best trained in numerous trades. Can weld solder pipes do sheet metal work minor electrical work rum milling machines & lathes and do precison work. We still got more overtime then them and broke there balls about it.

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer 8 лет назад +1

      Gary Mike I get the point. Although it`s only implied the point is that millwrights are superior to electricians maybe in terms of work ethic. I get the joke. (Besides, that`s also how construction workers worked every time I checked in my village at home.)
      Below is some food for thought connecting spelling and grammar and logic to troubleshooting and trades tasks. It is not meant to be disrespectful to any trades, or any comments posted or persons. This all is just linking ideas across seemingly unrelated academics and trades.
      Millwrights, electricians, auto service technicians, plumbers and a lot of other trades do troubleshooting in finding fault in electrical circuits, hydraulic lines, mechanical linkages, etc.
      Now technically, the counter-argument to correct spelling mentioning book writing is invalid because it changes the subject. Book writing compares length of text vs. length of posted comment, a topic also featured in my post besides spelling correctness. Side-by-side mention does not mean connection or logical relation. "I ate a banana and I like fixing things" is listing 2 things, it does not mean that I like bananas, just states the fact that I ate it and its quantity was 1.
      "I welded the hinges in the morning, now I`m in the hospital" doesn`t mean welding caused a serious injury or I`m injured at all. I could be delivering the fixed hospital equipment.
      "The service limit length of chain is 150cm, size 5/8 inch" doesn`t mean a 1/2 inch chain will ever work as long as its it`s the right length.
      The other technical issue is the point is actually never made, we only have a single-time observation about the number of people on task and the number of people present. A single observation is neither a tendency nor a universal truth. "I saw a Chinese guy causing an accident" doesn`t mean all Chinese are bad drivers at all times. "I had a Dewalt drill, it blew its battery in a month" doesn`t mean Dewalt drills are bad, Dewalt batteries are bad, they have always been bad, ... etc
      The third logical glitch is cross-attributing. The qualities of the product (inferior light bulbs, stinky sewage, slow students, rusty metal) does not extend or become the qualities of its user or maker (electrician, pump operator, teacher, forging press operator, respectively. GM doesn`t make the tire for the car that blew its wire belts 2 times in a month now, or its lights that keep burning out. Dunlop makes tires and GE makes the bulbs, both are unrelated to GM`s design of the vehicle.

    Having experience in both field, I can safely say that electrical work is much MUCH easier and cleaner. It's also been my experience that most electricians are whiny pussies who lose their shit if they have to do something that varies a tiny amount from their trade.
    A lot of the millwright work I did could be performed by a laborer (bolting up flanges,etc...) but I would love to see the results of a laborer or electrician trying to rebuild a simple Dodge gearbox.
