      Agreed... its amazing how many people fish a couple of foot in 5ft to 6ft plus of water and wonder why they arnt catching 🤣 I was between 5 and 6ft yesterday fishing tight to the bottom of my local canal on pole. Its the shallow section of the place I'm at too! People need to realise if you fish up in the water you gotta keep feeding regular .. try catch on the drop and bring the fish up in the water

    Hi Jon what a wonderful
    video. These early morning sessions with the birdsong as background are unbeatable! For many anglers this type of waggler fishing is what they like and while the pole gives great presentation many still prefer using a rod and reel. I do hope you will post a whip fishing video as that is fishing at it's most simple basic form. Bill

    Brilliant vid ! So underused nowadays. I still love fishing the wag on the Glos canal, not many do these days. I knew exactly what Dave Berrow float that was , still have one, and yes, it came free with the Mail :) . I commented a while ago on a James Robbins bodied wag fishing vid about how good it would be if float/wag only series/matches came about, similar to what has recently happened to feeder fishing ? It would be great to see a renaissance of the art . Tight lines !

    Last year I hooked a fish on the Grand Union canal Greenford which after a fight snagged me on a sunken tree.
    The next day I went with stronger line - still only 3lb and managed to get it in. Was really surprised to see a big eel! It was really thick but managed to slip out of the net and back in the canal while I was faffing with the scales.
    Both times the swim went quiet before it bit. Can't say it was the nicest fish I've caught and impossible to hold!
    Great video by the way.

    Just what you want on your last cast, an eel to make your landing net stink to high heaven! Great video. It's great fishing waters with hardly any carp in. You can fish with the finesse you need to catch quality fish without getting smashed up. Even if you land carp on light tackle, they frighten every other fish out of a swim you might have been building up for over an hour - and for what, another crappy four pound carp, just like a thousand others you've caught!

No gudgeon left any more in all my local cuts and too many bonus perch and bream about to risk using a whip on most canals I know anyway, unless you're just catching very little roach. But whip fishing on the river is something else and I still do that a bit!

    My son, Simon, used to fish Leamington Anglings junior evening matches so quite likely you were around as a sprog in those days. Maybe you also remember Ian Heaps who would come around encouraging the juniors and present the prizes for the Leamington Liberals. He was great with the youngsters some of whom were taller than he was.

      I only fished the Liberals matches with Phil and Carl in charge, but once fished the Police Junior National further up at Crow Wood and Ian Heaps gave out the prizes. My brother got a DAM reel for a bream assisted 3rd! Also went to an Ian Heaps' roadshow at the Spa Centre!

    A fun session that. Bit surprised to see you plumb up using the plummet, why not a big shot on the hook which might make less of a splash when you cast out? Like the home made peacock wagglers. Enjoyable video watch as always.

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur  7 месяцев назад +1

      Cheers, I deliberately used the plummet as it gives a more positive reading and is much easier to swing the short distance and 'hold on to' plus it was a quick short session with minimal gear with me. If it was a bigger and wider expanse and more time to prep I have a pot of larger shot that I use instead. I actually pop a bait band in the slit of a AAA, SA or SSG.

    As a Grand Union (nr. Leamington) local guy canal angler, you'll love this true story =
    I got drawn on a mediocre peg in a 200 pegger open match
    I was near the viaduct , just above the lock on the Offchurch/Radford Road .. I thought I'd done ok, and maybe would win the section.
    But, 2 pegs away from me, a fella hooked & landed a 4 & a half pound Brown Trout! I saw him do it. He didn't cheat 😊.... a Brown Trout ffs! It might as well of been a Great White Shark, to be credible believable! ... The bugger done me in my section, and came 2nd in the match. But the stick he got then, and forever after, wasn't worth the cash in the brown envelope 😂. ... the good old funny days lol

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur  3 года назад

      Now that is very lucky for the guy who caught the trout and even unluckier for you! Most unusual thing I've caught is a kettle while lure fishing down Welsh Road! :-)

  • @laurieharper1526

    This is lovely. Its not always practical in a match, but waggler fishing is a great way to fish on a canal. I've still got my free Dave Berrow balsa waggler (with its tip intact). I like the old Drennan canal crystals. Btw, remember to tie your camera to something next time out.

    Great to see, how I was taught, I haven't coarse fished for years but when I return I will be fishing this way. God knows what they do now and if I can even buy the tackle. we would fish for double Carp this way and did well. Im told fishing is very different these days? all bells whistles and catching paets in ponds? I wonder who can trot a sick float on a river for big Roach these days?

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur  4 года назад

      There's lots of good canal and river fishing sport to be had, but most of my rivers are too sluggish to run a stick float down most of the time, but a nice narrow pace river is still worth a bash. I like to mix things up so I like canals, lakes and rivers. It's all fun to me!

    Great video Jon, nice to see an old traditional method being used, can you tell me when you plumb up on a waggler where on the float is it best to work to for your bait to sit stable on the deck, top of the body or on the float tip its self?

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur  4 года назад +1

      'Dead depth' is when you can just see the float tip, so I tend to plumb up to that but fish an inch or two over depth to begin with.

    Why is your clutch set so loose for little silvers? It’d be great to get some shots of where the float is and the bites but you’ve given me a bit of encouragement to dig out the old puddle chucker and have a go on the river or local canal. Nice cheap, fun fishing.

    • @JonArthur
      @JonArthur  2 года назад

      Soft clutch makes a soft rod even more forgiving with light hooklengths. You’d definitely need it with a puddle chucker as they’re a bit pokey.
