tonight in Oakland: the a’s begin their final home-stand at the coliseum…. not just of this month, and of this season. but … for ever.
it’s something that has obviously been on the calendar for a long time, but arrived so quickly. and now the tragedy that some have been anticipating since april 2023, is the reality that all will be experiencing come thursday, september 26th… once that final home game is over.
i realize there are still actual baseball games to be played. final scores to be tallied. and some milestones to be reached. brent rooker aiming for 40, langeliers & miller shooting for respective 30’s.. i hope gelof and butler both get to 20-20 campaigns.
i literally love all those guys as players, and i truly wish them the best. but no offense, right here right now… none of that… is on my radar this weekend. or the rest of the way. i really couldn’t care less about anything from a baseball sense. i do care about something that was a living, breathing passion for so many.. that will soon become extinct.
actual baseball became the sub-story long ago for the supporters of Oakland. and now, this is entirely about the fans, the journey, the experience, the love, the hurt, and the end.
i plan to make one last trip to the coliseum in its baseball configuration… scoop up some dirt, take one last glance, and walk back out the tunnel. quite honestly i’d rather remember that place with the orange seats, and going to my first ever games of the 80’s, and being innocently excited about learning baseball… rather than whatever these last couple years have become.
it’s also amazing how much green & gold stuff… one can acquire over the decades. sadly, all those jerseys, shirts, posters, stickers… they have either been tossed, or assigned to their new home. a cardboard box, in our attic.
people have asked… will i still make videos about the a’s after this season is over?
to be honest, my brain hasn’t even got that far yet.
considering that… i’ve already lost the team I covered.
then lost my job connected to it… i’m not sure how much i need all those vibes in my life.
    however…
i certainly will never lose my connections with sports fans of the east bay… the bay area, and NorCal. and i do intend to respect the legacy of what this franchise was for more than 50 years locally.
also… painful as it might be… i will continue documenting the important history of relocation unfolding, right before our eyes.
i wish i could say something that made anyone feel better.
but here are some general pieces of advice for everyone. if you’re overwhelmed… give yourself some space… this isn’t supposed to feel right. if you’re not from around this area… just leave us alone. and if you are attending any fo the final 6 coliseum games… please be respectful and considerate of others.
this is… after all… the conclusion of a year-long funeral for major league baseball in oakland.

I think you have the right Idea Brodie! I was gonna go to a game to visit the Coliseum one last time while I was down visiting my family but never made it. Largely bc I feel like I should remember it as it was. Not the dying dilapidated state it is now and the sad situation the team finds itself in. It's going to be a sad moment indeed, an end of an era. To outsiders, it may be seen as a dump, but it's our dump. So long, Coliseum. Thanks for the memories!

Josh Donaldson hit a walk off homer against Zach Britton, one of my best memories of my life. Its so sad for me even if I dont live in the Bay Area. I will be there next wednesday and thursday, cheering for the A's one last time. 😭😭😭

My first ever baseball game was an A’s game in 1988 vs the Mariners at the coliseum. I was 7. I can still remember sitting in the upper deck looking at the Oakland hills thinking it was baseball heaven. What a special place.
I’m sorry A’s fans. It is total BS they are being taken away from you. Hopefully someday (soon) they will return. Enjoy this weekend and take in all the memories of that beautiful place.

As a Yankees fan, I'm sorry to the passionate A's fans, for losing your team. From a far,I was rooting, for Oakland to keep your team in Oakland. I actually thought they would stay when I heard that the A's would have a new stadium near a waterfront near a industrial area, and the new 🏟️ look nice, but was shocked that the deal fell through. All my life I've only known the A's as Oakland. I know they were in Philly, and Kansas City before, but will be very strange to never have NYY-A's(Oakland) again. Damn Oakland has no teams,I feel for all of you.

As an Arizona Coyotes fan and game night worker for years with the team, I feel for you folks in Oakland. If you're attending... and I hope many of you will be, do yourself a favor. Try to take in EVERY moment that you can and, when you do, try to do as much of it as you can withOUT your phones. Have a good look around and absorb it with your own eyes. Smell the grass, the air, the peanuts & popcorn.... hell, even the beer. Use your human senses. Sure, you're going to take some pics & video, but try not to have your faces buried in your phone all night. Don't ignore the human element of it all. When it's over, and some time has passed, you'll want to know how you really felt in those moments.

April 1968 Yankees vs A's was my first time to the Coliseum as an eight years old. My parents first date was an A's game at Shibe Park in 1948. The Oakland A's have been my Summers for 57 years. My brother worked for the organization for a decade. I snuck into the 88 Worlds Series by going through the Front office shaking Sandy Alderstons hand along the way. And made the first two games of the 89 WS. I raised 2 A's fans by taking them from Alaska to Phoenix for spring training every year for at least a week, during their ball playing years, for ten years straight between 98 to 08. The highlight being Muhammad Ali patting my son on the head and giving him an autograph while he attended an A's game at Phoenix Muni. These next six games are going to be rough. Even though I have lived in Alaska for 45 years, I'm still Rooted In Oakland unlike the A's.

The A's were in Philadelphia for 54 seasons and won 5 World Series in Philadelphia before relocating to Kansas City and then Oakland , so they are a franchise that has relocated multiple times. Yes it sucks as they had many great seasons in Oakland and a bunch of World Series titles but this franchise has continually broken the hearts of their fans. Terrible ownership has been a part of this franchise since its inception, I wish they stayed in Oakland but because of the inept ownership and terrible stadium once again they are moving, ugh!!

Well said! Growing up in northern Cali I was fortunate enough to listen to bill king, ray fosse, and lon Simmons on the radio. Those teams of the 80's and 90's (both good and bad) is what I grew up on. As an adult listening to glen and Ray was still and amazing thing to share with my son. My son's first game was opening day 2023, and even though shortly later it was announced that the A's were officially leaving, and Ray fosse passing, and glen being fired, I'm glad we went when there was still a little magic left. The magic is gone in the John fisher Oakland A's, but my love for the team name, and green and gold lives on as I coach my son in little league and remember the voices of lon, bill, and Ray as they told an amazing story that was real, and not just in a book. Good luck brodie, you have always been a class act and i wish you the best.

August 21, 1982 was the day that I became a true A's fan. That was the day that my 8-year-old self attended his first baseball game. The A's overcame an early 5-0 deficit to win 12-5 over the Boston Red Sox. Tony Armas hit a Grand Slam and Ricky Henderson stole 3 bases that afternoon (on his way to a record setting 130 that year). Getting to see players like Henderson, Armas, Dwayne Murphy, Davey Lopes, and Steve McCatty in person was awesome.
When I heard the A's were leaving Oakland I told myself that I needed to go to one last A's game at the Coliseum to say goodbye, but now that the time is actually here I can honestly say that I just don't care enough to even want to go. I'll probably watch the game on TV, but any love that I had for the A's is long gone and killed by this current ownership group and their complete ineptitude at running a major league team and complete indifference towards the fan base.

The Coliseum is where I first became a sports fan. My mom & grandma took me to my first A’s game in the Billy Ball era in Sept 1981, a 5-1 win over the White Sox who were managed by Tony LaRussa who by the end of the decade would lead the A’s to their fourth & final World Series title in Oakland. For my mom it runs much deeper: she once shared Raider season tickets with her old boyfriend, in 1968, two years after the Coliseum opened.
I paid my last respects to the Coliseum back on September 8th, at the end of the A’s last homestand. A large part of my childhood & adult life will perish when this park goes away.

My final game at the Coliseum will stand as the 13-1 blowout loss to the Angels on April 1, 2023 last year. And even after my Uber passed by the Old Oakland Arena that use to be the Warriors' home prior to the move to San Francisco, it gave me a surreal feeling that the Coliseum won't be the same after the A's leave like how the Raiders did in 2019. I cherished every moment of that day, even cracking some jokes with some other A's fans around me. Really wished I could of been able to come by here one last time for my soon to be 2 year old Daughter, so she could experience what I felt as a kid going here with my grandparents and parents back in the mid 90s.
Thank you for being here for all of us, Brodie. It's been fun to see you on NBC California for many years covering both the A's and the Sharks. Will still be supporting you and watching all that you cover.

This is giving me a fresh perspective on both the importance of the A’s and just having an innocent and beautiful love of the A’s.

Everyone has to do what is right for them. My memorabilia is staying on my walls, they are attached to great memories. The little one who is almost 9'and went to games from the time she was a baby moved on quickly and I'm glad. Her response to the move in her most curt and condescending tone was simply "that's fine, I have the RiverCats and they have a cute cat mascot." In other words, head on dude, you are not required for my happiness or joy of baseball. She won't wear any RiverCats stuff with Giants on it but she's not mourning the loss of a team that is leaving. I wish I was more like her because she is so far removed it is refreshing. She has sports in perspective, it is the same as any other form of entertainment and that is a lot healthier than most of the world.

As a Yankees fan,I send condolences to the A's and their fans. No fan base should have to go through losing their team, and while our teams have had quite the rivalry over the decades, it's part of what makes sports fun. It doesn't feel right when a rival isn't there anymore. Baseball doesn't feel right without Oakland. You guys deserve so much better than John Fisher (and we can't forget Mark Davis). I recall a double-header in the 1980's from the center of the bleachers, when Keogh, the DH, hit a homer in the ninth, caught by my friend, Pete, to send the game into extra innings; it went 18 innings and we lost. I went home, but we won the second game... at one o'clock in the blessed AM.

I will "book end" watching the A's by being at the Coliseum to see the Yankees on Saturday night. My first A's match at the Coliseum was against the Yankees in 1984. Next season instead of driving 90 miles I can drive the 9 miles from my home in Sacramento to West Sac. The Coliseum is a beautiful "bowl" if you ignore Mt Davis. the view before that over the bleachers and scoreboard was nice of the Oakland Hills. Won't ever forget that. Sad for the end of an era. Will enjoy seeing the A's in my backyard for a few.

It's just so depressing as a sports fan to see real communities have their teams taken away. How many teams currently play in transient cities where people only really go because they are "there"? Most Clippers fans admit the Lakers are their main team, no one in LA cares about the Chargers at all. The Raiders used to have the most rabid fanbase in the NFL, now they are regularly outnumbered in their home stadium.

At least it isn't the end for the Coliseum, we have the softball game in October and then we have the the USL moving in next season. Hoping they maintain the relationship with the community volunteers that set up the garden and are talking expansion of that space onto the backyard sized mini baseball diamond area likely to be removed that's next to it (even if they can no longer call it "A's team farm" they can keep it). I know I'm not the only one that loves the stadium garden and feels it gives OCo some charm other stadiums could never hope to match.

You fully understand how I felt back in April (and still do) when the much more sudden news came down that the Arizona Coyotes hockey assets were going to be sold off to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith. And the hate that opposing fans dished out at that team, including certain trolls that came onto here (whom will never be forgiven). The frustration boiled over that month and lots of anger over how the franchise fate was decided.
So the same time, I'm sure this is beyond heartbreaking and frustrating for you because not only did you grow up with the Oakland Athletics, you covered them during your accomplished career. That should never ever be questioned by anyone that does not understand how you are feeling. Like Coyotes fans, we sadly see a highly unpopular owner who did a terrible job in operating this franchise and alienated the loyal A's fan base. While they were looking for a new ballpark longer than the Coyotes were for an arena, it was no secret that John Fisher failed to deliver. He had an obligation to A's fans to provide stability and put out a competitive team. Plus give A's fans belief he had them in their best interests. Clearly, like Alex Meruelo, he did not.
I'm so sorry, Brodie. You deserved a lot better than this. The Bay Area clearly can support two Major League Baseball teams. I remember watching the 1989 World Series. I was at an SAT class when the earthquake happened. When I got home, it was all over the news even in New York. I know the excitement that surrounded your region, similar to when the Yankees and Mets squared off 11 years later. This is even worse of a fate knowing that only the Chicago White Sox are worse than the A's on the American League field this season. I cannot blame A's fans staying away in droves more so against Fisher.
I would not blame you if you did not cover the team after the A's depart Oakland. I'm not following the Utah Hockey Club. I know in your case, it is different where you cover sports for a living. One thing I do know, you will give the A's the best goodbye anyone can. Just sucks you are losing your team.

I understand how you are feeling and there is always hope for the future. My dad was a die hard NY Giants fan. When they announced the move to SF, he and many others were hurt, sad, and angry. NY wanted another team to replace the Dodgers and Giants. William Shea threatened a new league, the Continental, in order to bring another team back to NY. The fear was many top players would move to this new league. As a compromise with MLB, NY, Houston, Anaheim, and DC were given expansion teams. That is where the Shea Stadium name came from. He brought National League baseball back to NY.
Though nothing that drastic will happen, I feel Oakland will eventually have another team, (either the A's if LV falls apart or an expansion team). Wishing all A's fans the best and hope you get a replacement team soon.

Once the history of the Coliseum has its' final chapter, final page, final period--that's when it will hit every fan in the gut. Savor these final games, even if the outcome isn't what A's fans are hoping for in the end. One small suggestion, midas well sing the New Year's Eve staple "Auld Lang Syne", especially if the players are smart enough to roam the field after the final out. It is a sad time, but what a run it was. What a run it was.

Going into this season, there were 3 MLB franchises I had to see play a game in person. I took the time to see those teams and said my goodbye this past May. I'm glad I got to reach that personal goal having watched all 30 franchises at least once in my life. Felt like closure. Since then, I haven't watched a second of a MLB game, and I haven't missed it. I've had a lot of UFC, boxing, Olympics, WNBA, Sharks off season to keep me preoccupied this past summer. I feel like I've moved on already, and so I think that has helped me significantly in dealing with this.
