Wow. I grew up going to this mall multiple times a week in the 90’s. I haven’t been there in at least 20 years so the history lesson was really helpful! I had no idea so many stores closed. It’s just a wall where Sears was…. It’s such a shame…. Thanks for the video though! It really brought back many memories.
This brought back so many memories. Grew up going to this mall in the 90s and early 2000s. It’s really sad seeing the decline of it. I have such vivid memories of the place being so packed for the holidays and I would always visit Borders and Sam Goodies. I’m a pianist now but as a kid I would always walk by the piano store and longingly look at the grand pianos. I even saw HP Sorcerer Stone for my 12th birthday at that Carmike. And I absolutely agree with the other people this mall was so much better than the citadel - it was so much safer.
Probably not last another 10 years would be my guess, although, theres still a decent amount of businesses in there, there just not of the largest scale and brick and mortar retail stores are having a helluva time trying to stay open in a lot of cases as has been the trend due to big-box retailers and ONLINE SHOPPING.. I AM GLAD I LIVED THROUGH THE ERA AS A LATE GEN-X THAT I DID, SAW A LOT OF GOOD TIMES!! I moved out of state in 2011, so i appreciate this video to see what it looks like more currently! Thanks again.
this was the mall i would go too i used to live in colorado springs it was the better of the two malls and much safer than the citadel mall. thanks for the memories
I'm new to your channel, and I've grown up visiting both Chapel Hills and the Citadel malls. Both are nice malls, but going downhill, especially since Namdar took over ownership.
Unfortunately this is the first year they have gone very minimum on Christmas decorations. Only the fountain area is decorated with a area for santa and a huge tree. I remember when the mall used to be decorated with large banners and lights everywhere. The neons were gorgeous! Too bad they never turn them on, there’s way more neon then whats on in your video, and as of recently the food court is the only one using neons still, and its not even real neon it’s been replaced with cheap blue strip lights. They fixed most of the escalators and the elevator for Black Friday but now they are mostly in dis repair again. For a few weeks the elevator, a staircase in the back of a long hallway, and the escalators in dillards and Macey’s were the only way to get downstairs. There’s constantly rain buckets everywhere because they wont repair the leaks, and its so sad to see this mall decline. I was happy on Black Friday because it was almost an image back into her glory days, halls littered with people, smiling children, music actually playing for once, etc. the way it stands as about a week ago, its back to the same old depressing decline. The huge empty parking lots are becoming torn up, and one is used for a motorcycle school ran in the mall. None of the food court businesses except gyros are seen anywhere else but this mall, dairy queen is gone not like in this video. However, the food court seems to be the most active area still with only 2-3 empty store fronts. It’s definitely got a few good years left, but unfortunately when the mall does die it will likely be demolished immediately after closure to make room for apartments, like they already did with the old sears. At 9:17 you can see the walled off area where sears was where apartments now exist. Also you can see the lone staircase i was talking about. I definitely believe citadel will go first, due to the crime rate and safety of the area. Thanks for making this video
As someone who is lived in Colorado Springs born and raised here and have been here more than 20 years I have to say the citadel is definitely the worse of the 2. I mean you're lucky if you walk out of there not being shot. But chapel hills unfortunately is very much going down hill as well and I'm sure honestly both of them are going to die out pretty soon. I think the ones in Denver are here to stay for a while, but colorado springs is eventually going to lose their spots I think.
@TheBrickLord for real, why was the citadel so dangerous? I lived in the springs when I was young and went to one of the two malls with my brothers and parents. I think the citadel, but I don't remember I moved up to Denver from the springs in'98 and was born in 90 in St. Paul Minnesota. I never knew the citadel was so bad. I guess I wouldn't have known as a kid, though.
@TheBrickLord Same here, i was born n raised in Colorado Springs, and I grew up with this mall being as I lived just a few miles away but it's sad to see what's become of my former occasional hangout as a youth. I was there from 86-2010. The state of this mall is kinda depressing at this point, it's definitely cozy as far as malls go, but believe me in the late 80s this place was bustling!! I found this video and wanted to check out what's going on in the modern day. I used to frequent the movie theatre and food court, we had a great movies place in there. I used to check out the stores too if I had some money burning a hole in my pocket lol 😆. This is awesome that this video was made thank you for doing this, I am feeling homesick and this helped take the edge off. - Colorado Springs native 4evr lost in Illinois
What are your thoughts on Chapel Hills Mall, and which Colorado Springs mall do you think will be here to stay?
Both of them probably. Colorado loves it's malls. Same could be said about Minnesota.
Thank you for sharing!

This was the most depressing mall I've ever been to. No point in it being open.
