i think the machine just generates or gains a sentience or self consciousness of its own. after all, blood is fuel. the machines become alive in a way, but a human being has a soul inside a vessel. angels and demons are essentially souls manifested without a mortal vessel like a human being normally is, with prime souls being the closest to how angels and demons manifest their essence
From what the community could gather the excavator or sadrobot was probably building the tranches of the war to help the humans hence the warrior of man in the flag
