Keith Richards has inspired on a traditional instrument from Brazil called "Viola" wich has 5 pairs of strings, played in, guess what? Open G! At the time stones had been touring in Brazil and he got impressed with the traditional country brazilian musician.

Hey Pedro - thanks for that snippet of info. Never knew that and it's classic Keith to be inspired by music from all over the world. Also, as he's got older (like me) it get's a lot easier to play rock and roll using the 5 string open G method. Wish I'd known it when I was still rocking and doing drugs and booze as a young man. Can't go wrong haha :)

Absolutely love your analysis at the end. "He's a guitar player doing something that benefits the sound of the song and the sound of the band"
Exactly. It's this organic thing where his playing just is a natural part of the flow of the band. He doesn't try to stand out. But precisely because of that, he does. In my list of favourite guitarplayers, that is.

The bit about removing the low E makes sense to me. I love death metal (where runnings such as D standard have given way to C# standard, or even A standard on a 7 string), but in a *live* context, it's so easy for every song to end up asa sludgy mix of snare blastbeats, barely distinguishable riff progressions, and invisible bass just reinforcing the root notes.

Now tune your B string to a just instead of equal-tempered major 3rd! That can clean up the dissonance of 3rds played with distortion, and since in open-G you’ll mostly be playing your thirds on that string, the way it throws other things off tends to not matter as much. Also, Rob, get a capo. The ability to change up voicings that use open strings is worth playing around with.

    Thanks so much, Rob!
Like they say, "When the student is ready, the teacher appears". About 20 yrs ago I fell in love with "Orkney" tuning. CGDGCD. The low C string can't go much lower. Perfect for me and my writing. It's my bass. My music is mostly acoustic and tends to use minor a lot. I know now because of your explanation, that if I remove the low E string, then tune down my high C string to B, I'm there with Keith. I'm curious to see how my music will feel.
Normal tuning in my case was very limiting. Orkney tuning works for me because I run into new things all the time. It keeps on giving and fits my style. I'm self taught and lazy.
This simple tuning addition will be quick and easy to change back and forth from where I always play. I think I'll try keeping the low string on my acoustic and remove it on my electric. Maybe even start recording again and see how this change helps in the mix.
I just now subscribed here and I won't be at all surprised when you present us with another gem. Thanks

I discovered open E tuning, right after I started playing guitar, with The Black Crows' "She Talks To Angels".

I totally agree, can't beat Keiths' Rockin Roll rhythms and the Rolling stones influence on Rock music. My favorite were the Keith Richards and Mick Taylor years, not to take away from Ron Wood a great guitarist himself especially when he was with Rod Stewart and the Faces, those were the days my friend.
