If the Zoro actor pulls off the emotions Zoro showed in his first encounter with Mihawk in the manga/anime, then this is gonna be one of his defining roles ever I'm sure
If you actually look at how oda described each character originally, Luffy was Brazilian, Nami Swedish, Franky American, Zoro Japanese, usop African, sanji French, Nico robin Russian, etc so it actually follows what Oda saw his characters as. And oda said he wouldn't let it release unless it was perfect
@minchi_the_aoigirl yes exactly the casting choice is actually canonical. It's because we're used to either all Japanese or all white sounding voice actors in the anime that it feels weird that's what I thought at first so the first thing I did was Google what are their Canon ethnicities
I agree. Something about Nami's hair looks a little too much like a wig in a way that it shouldn't since like you said, orange hair is a natural possibility
I dunno man, as far as all of my friends who have dyed hair, the roots growing out after not being able to dye it again for a while is pretty damn realistic
Regarding the eyebrows, if this show ever gets far enough to get wanted posters for everyone, it'd be really funny to see the curly eyebrows on Sanji's sketch. It sounds even funnier when the original doesn't have them... (and imagine the guy with real curly eyebrows showing up way later, comedic gold)
LOL- absolutely! Honestly, that gag might be even better in live action if they give him the shittiest, most unrealistic, and most inaccurate drawing possible to get pissed about
I would have wished there would be a slight curl to his eyebrows. Maybe just some outstanding hairs on top, but still natural looking. But the idea with the wanted poster is wonderful xD
I agree I’ve seen so many people on here hating on them for not keeping the curly eyebrows or the long nose but I’m also convinced those same people would complain if they did keep it for being to tacky. I feel like a lot of anime fans came into this just wanting to hate it and I believe that if you aren’t willing to give something a chance you will hate it regardless.
@@eastonvaughan5631 yeah I'm more concerned about the writing than the overall look of it. From what I've seen so far, the cgi looks decent. I honestly wouldn't mind a cg chopper, but 1 season with him in it feels like a rushed story. We'll have to wait and see.
@@eastonvaughan5631 Sanji's brows would not look tacky and they are actually necessary to the story. Lots of ppl have handlebar mustaches, so they could to something similar for his eyebrows. Usopp's nose doesn't have to be too long, just a bit long to signify that he's a liar. What you don't seem to understand is that what makes OP unique is the strange characters. Without those strange characteristics, it will look like a high school musical production or any other teen movie. Sanji for example has no identifiers that differentiates him. No stubble, no eyebrows, no cigarette, even his yellow hair had very visible black roots. Aside from him wearing that black suit everywhere, nothing about him tells us he's Sanji. It's like if Buggy didn't have any makeup. These are not complaints, but accurate and easily doable fixes.
That would be too costly for a series, there are three possibilities: 1. they use a costume and puppets, that they could do really really really well as it is reutilizable. And also make chopper feel shame or something letting them wrap him in bandages or a coat to obscure 95% of his body. 2. They completely remove chopper from the story (a sad but real possibility). 3. They do mid to bad CGI, and avoid showing chopper the most they realistically could (the most likely choice).
I mean some proportions you just can't do realistically without it looking funky/weird,human bodies just don't have the bones and muscles to do so in normal situations.
Little fun fact: For the German version of this movie, they got the original German voice actors to dub this so the voices are 1:1 as in the German dubbed anime. This gives it more of an anime feel.
I think Luffy's actor looks PERFECT and has incredible energy. He cried while watching the trailer, the actors are all so excited and that gives me hope. Also, as a dub watcher (i've watched parts in sub as well) I can see how this would be more jarring for sub only watchers of the anime.
I grew up with the german dub and after thriller bark i had to grow on the japanese dub but the english just makes me puke but this trailer didnt do that bad
The cowboy bebop live action was not that great but I do have high hopes for one piece the acting the costumes look accurate to what they are like in the Manga and with Oda in the project and him overseeing the live action of his Baby we are looking good just trust oda and his vision
If I had to wager, I think the trailer already showed us where Season 1 will end. Particularly the scene where the 5 original Strawhats have their legs up on barrel, proclaiming their goals out as they prepare to enter the Grand Line. That scene just feels like a natural stopping point for the narrative with the added benefit that the chaotic ride up then back down the mountain would be a great way to start season 2 with an action scene that could reintroduce the characters to viewers (example: Sanji and Zoro's bickering while Usopp panics). Also I dont think Chopper would be the end of season stinger reveal, as they stopped off at the island where they picked up Vivi before hitting Chopper's island
I think they casted arlong tho so I think maybe after they beat the Fishman and get nami completely on their crew then it'll end. They also casted kid and adult versions of namis sister
I think that their interpretation of Buggy is OBJECTIVELY correct. While yes, Buggy is a comedic character, he is still "in world" a at least slightly intimidating pirate captain. While Oda's design makes him seem more silly, there isn't a realistic way to make him look the same way in live action without pushing it over the edge into uncanny territory. Same goes with Sanji's eyebrows, and Usopp's nose. Though hopefully the Gum-Gum attacks aren't too cringe with the yelling, cause it seems like it could cross that line.
I like they specifically mentioned why Luffy calls out his attack names, otherwise it would be very weird for a non anime audience. Maybe he just does it a few times as an homage.
If they can capture the contrast between Buggy's scary appearance with the reality of how weak he is then they'll knock his portrayal out of the park. If you think about it, he would have to be incredibly intimidating to fool so many people into thinking he's powerful.
Its still hard to say, put a Japanese man in a room full of Western people producers/directors, you cant just act like boss dictating this and that, even if your the author....Considering japanese culture and their perspective towards westerners, hmmmmmmmmmmm

@@Vandy-- depending on success or failure, one piece fan expectations are quite high because oda intervened although the basic rule of live action anime manga is don't get your expectations too high
I think the biggest difference is that the original Cowboy Bebop is a very short, highly episodic show that they tried to turn into a serialized long running narrative, so they had to add a bunch of stuff to expand the story. Some of this stuff was pretty good. Jet having a kid was a great addition. But man they destroyed Vicious. One Piece won't have this issue. There's so so much story to adapt. They won't need to add anything. In fact, they'll probably struggle to get everything important into the 8 hours they have.
@@meciocio this, its why im struggling and practically hating the wano arc, i LOVED wano for the first time, but once they reached onigashima, BRUHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, in fact 99.9% of one piece is like wano, even though the story is good, theres just too much bloat
The Netflix crew responsible for Cowboy Bebop didn't have the slightest respect or regard for the original material. From John Cho saying he wouldn't watch the original to the writers talking about "updating" Keiko Nobumotos script, it clearly came for a place of snarky contempt rather then reverence and respect. Also, regarding the story, all episodes are crucial to the narrative since they characterize the crew and are all imerse in the theme of "the dream", which is where Spikes nihilism comes from. The events from the "main story" are all experienced in contrast with this aura, this feeling that all their lives are already over. The melancoly in Spikes voice (something the american VA absolutely missed) was replaced with this stupid, snappy delivery, and if all of the netflixz version writers came together, they wouldn't make 1% of Watanabes skill as a director. I think theres a beautiful, masterful live action version of the show that requires a very talented crew to pull off.

From the bits and pieces I've seen of the actor's excitement and general vibes, I'm looking forward to the live action. They've been genuinely happy and proud of what they've put together.
For us in German countries its the best. Because the German dub of One Piece is freakin iconic and they are going to use all the original voice actors to sync this show. So for us the One Piece experience is even more real. I wonder is this happening in Japan too? And honestly the best live actions so far are all the Kenshin movies and Casshern (which is till to this day one of my favorite movies in general)
Is that actually confirmed? That's actually huge! Rip old Zoro though :( Edit: actually, I've just realized that means we'd get german chopper in a potential season 2 as well :(

@@terimummy2449 What? The cast are passionate and look like they are having fun. The writing crew care. They even did the unthinkable and actually listened to the original creator as Oda has given this his stamp of approval and is working with them.
I'm so excited for this to come out, I'm not a One Piece fan, but a Mackenyu's fan and I'm really excited to watch his performance. He's a great actor and puts everything in his characters, I'm sure at least Zoro will be accurate to the original. For those who don't know him, he has been working in Japanese entertainment for almost a decade now and his characters are always well portrayed. He started to go international recently, you can now watch him as Seiya in Knights of the Zodiac!
Oda is heavily involved with the production. The producer of OPLA, Matt Owen, said that Sanji will be more of a flirt than a womanizer. His goal is to make the adaptation natural irl while not losing the essence of what OP and the characters are all about. The outfits are based on Oda's OP color book. The producer himself is a real weeb and a huge OP fan btw. He will add some Easter eggs for the manga/anime fans (there's actually some in the teaser). He's caught up to the manga actually. Nami actress is a huge Nami fan, so it's like her dream come true. As you can tell, I'm a big OP fan lol The OP community in general feels good or ok about the teaser. I'm at least a bit relieved that the people working behind it understand the series. I won't have high expectation, but it's a win if the live action turns out decent.
anime in general doesnt translate well to live action, restrictions of LA vs Animation is the largest factor imho. that said, as you stated, if the director is a huge fan, and Oda the mangeka himself was involved heavily in this the ESSENCE of it can be captured. i am not a One Piece fan, just couldnt get into it, but theres a lot of hope that others could be adapted well if this one is. Of course with the mangeka as well.
unfortunately passion won't save live action adaptation. animation is what makes anime anime, and removing that is a guarantee that it's not gonna be good
i feel like one thing that Joey didn’t really mention is that Oda was involved in every single part of the show, even the producers said that if Oda wasn’t satisfied they wouldn’t go through with it until he was. So the fact that we are seeing the trailer means that Oda has given the thumbs up to release the trailer. As a complete 180 with Cowboy Bebop, that was more of a Fan project, while this Live Action has been in production for the last 6 years. Also, there will be 8 episodes and each one will be about an hour long I hope people see this comment so they are informed 🙏
This is a base level take. He was not involved with every decision. He wasn't even a writer. He basically emailed "yes" or "no". Nothing about this show will translate to live action over time. Idk how you translate 80 percent of the visual comedy that is exclusive to manga as a medium. This whole trailer just felt like a fan made cringefest with some decent cgi.
I find it strange that the anime I thought would be worst for live action due to that iconic art style is the one with the most care put into it. The actors actually look similar to the characters they are playing and the cgi doesn't look bad.
I grew up with the German voice over and they were my childhood. The same people are returning for the voices for the German synchro! Now I am thinking of watching it in German, simply for the nostalgia of it. When I watched the German trailer I literally got goosebumps.
@@tonylcv5658 you're welcome! I think it's really neat the original voice over speakers are coming back for the live action. I felt like a kid again watching the trailrr
After watching it a couple of times, the way “Gum-Gum” was said in the trailer sits well with me. It had the right energy. CGI didn’t look half bad either.
I have to agree. After I watched it a few more times I realised I pretty much had the same reaction with the Anime the first time I heard Luffy call out his attack and now I don't even notice it that much.
Inaki nails Luffy’s energy. It’s just his voice that’s gonna take some getting used to. I’m so used to Luffy’s Japanese voice actress that it’s weird hearing anyone else, but I’m still sold on his energy. This is just 1 named attack too, so I assume it gets better.
I really think they would like to avoid the big mistake they did with Cowboy Beebop, hence the reason on why Oda was so much involved in the project. I'm optimistic!
@@pudinkeviar4151do adaptations have to do the exact same thing the original does? Wont change much tbh, theres a lot of stuff in the older manga chapters and characters that wont fit a “modern audience” so we’ll have to see the netflix censorship first hand lmao
don't give Netflix too much credits. They are doing what they have always been doing, which is exactly nothing, and let the directors/ producers do whatever they want.
This trailer honestly gave me a lot of hope for this series. The actors feel like they portray the Straw Hats pretty well, the character interactions felt pretty cute
@pruitv3Do You have enough proof to call it garbage yet? At least wait to see one episode man. You shouldn't jump at conclusions like that just because most live actions are bad.
Buggy was never very scary though. He only took Zoro out because he was seriously injured. While he did give Luffy a challenge I think Luffy would have still beaten him without Nani's help.
Exactly, Buggy was the first real villain in the series. Him becoming a joke was a way of showing the crew's growth. I'm almost certain the point of Buggy looking so menacing in the show is going to serve the same purpose. He'll probably look scary then get beat and made to look like an idiot.
Doubt you'll see this, but Luffy and Usopp's different outfits are ones that are from colorspreads Oda drew back in east blue, also it'll be 8 episodes and will end around Logue town which is practically around 100 chapters, meaning the cliffhanger thing and all should be no problem.
IMO it will go like this Episode 1: Romance Dawn Episode 2: Orange Town Episode 3: Syrup Village Episode 4 and 5: Baratie Episode 6 and 7: Arlong Park Episode 8: Loguetown and it ends with the crew entering Reverse Mountain
100 chapters? My guy, you should look again, 100 chapters is where arabasta is ending dude😂 logue town is around chapter 30-40 in the anime, if you talking about the manga then more or less you are correct
@@DK-haze I'm not gonna delete it, my comment is still valid, if he refers to the manga chapters then he is correct since reverse mountain arc that we see in the trailer is chapter 101-105 in the manga so it's past logue town, if it's the anime then it's not 100 chapters
I'm excited to see how it all turns out. Creating a live version for an anime is always a tough thing to pull off, especially a show like ONE PIECE, but I know the cast and crew put a lot of passion into the creation of this live action show, so I'll be rooting for them as we approach the release date.

I’m not caught up on the anime, only in Dressrosa, but I love the cast so much they’re perfect at embodying the strawhats and passionate, I’m still wary but I like how it looks so far and the changes for Sanji and Usopp. But I really really hope this live action is successful so we can see the rest of the cast like Vivi, Crocodile, Ace, Robin and would love to see them give Chopper the Detective Pikachu treatment. I’m nervous yet hopeful it will work out
I am afraid it will look too "clean." It is often the case with most Netflix adaptations. Not grainy or scruffy enough, even when in battle or wounded. That is a huge reason why most manga adaptations look tacky in live action.
That's the only nitpick I have with this. the environment really feels like a set. but other than that it looks okay. the casting is definitely the greatest thing on this
i agree with you, but also keep in mind they are using the very start of one piece and alot of early one piece manga also had that issue when you compare it to later chapters
Why does every live action adaptation start from the beginning?? Why couldn't they make a separate plot in the current story and have a new character and story in there and make them appear in the current manga later on? Wouldn't it be cool? Isn't it just like the other One Piece movie?
@@carronline1 Then why not improve upon those aspects instead of making the same mistakes? They've got 20+ years of hindsight to have better production quality

Seems like anime fans don't know about the concept of "Camp" and this looks very campy, One Piece is already very campy, ridiculous and over the top. Camp is when something knows its silly and plays into it deliberately, its great to learn how to not take things so seriously and enjoy the silliness. Im hopeful about this, the cast and crew really put their hearts into this and if Oda is involved im not that worried.
YES THAT’S THE WORD I WAS LOOKING FOR! one piece is literally one of the most campiest animes to exist that it’s funny there’s sooo many people nitpicking and expecting it to follow each panel one by one when the show is so outlandish.
No. . .campy just means exaggerated to the 'nth degree. You have a serious misunderstanding of what "camp" means. If this was campy they would have given Sanji the eyebrows and Usopp the nose. This is just cringe. Not camp. The Adam West Batman is campy. This is cringe.
@@DandyAndy23 No. Camp isn't inherently about exaggeration, exaggeration just happens to often be a part of it. Camp is about embracing intentionally tasteless, gaudy choices in a semi-ironic way. I genuinely can't wait for this. Ignoring the stigma around live action anime This one is done out of pure passion and you can tell. I think more than anything, we should appreciate that one piece is being given this opportunity. A team that truly cares about One Piece is behind it. I love that more than anything we get the chance to see something produced by fans of the series
What I like about this adaptation is that everyone who is working on this is a fan of One Piece. And nothing gets past without Oda's approval. I still have my doubts and reservations about this show and even if it does end up being a flop, then I atleast give credit to the people for trying. I don't think One Piece works as a live action series and this doesn't need to exist but this is a really good effort.
As a One Piece fan for almost 15 years and also Western tv show/movie fan, this is a perfect combo for me. I don't mind the english call out moves although I'm a sub guy. I'm open to all of it and not gonna judge before even seeing the whole of it. LETS GO ONE PIECE NAKAMA!
Literally means nothing. While I’m not saying that makes it bad, him having his hand in the series can literally mean anything. As far as we know he only actually visited the set for promotion, once the show was already filmed. He’s also not a screenwriter and it’s not even in his language.
Big One Piece fan and I've been following the live action news for some time... If the looks don't bother you (as it did with me ngl) that much and you're more worried about how the story is going to go, you can actually be optimistic. Oda is highly involved in every creative choice, plus the writer is genuinely a huge One Piece fan that had Oda's personal approval. So out of everything, I have faith they're going to deliver in that aspect. But the dialogue, acting, hmmm that could be another problem. Overall I'm actually surprised a lot of people seem to like at as much as the people who don't!
@@troneenort7304 The actors look great and I know about the nationalities. It's my opinion only but some of the costumes don't look too good. Nami's hair for example looks like a bad cosplay in some scenes.
I think the voices are the only thing that makes me shake my head and they’re not even the teams’ fault, cause that’s just how things work with live actions so it’s just a case of getting used to. That’s why I’m super happy about this! I’ve fallen out out OP and never finished the show, but I’m getting excited again, man!
Please tell me you've at least kept up with the manga, because Oda has been spitting fire for a while now and let's just say things are coming out and to light (Will of D, Void Century, Gorosei) that are making the fandom go wild. Yea im positive they'll end at Reverse Mountain. What better cliffhanger for a second season than that? My thoughts are we gonna see the scene with them saying their dreams with their feet on the barrel and it will end with them at the very base of the mountain. I doubt we gonna see them going up the mountain as thats a very hype scene plus they will keep the mystery of what the Grand Line will look and be like
I'm very, very excited about this adaptation. What they need to do is what Arcane did for League of Legends. It put League in front of people who had 0 interest in League. One Piece fans will watch this adaptation (for better or worse) no matter what. They instead need to hit both audiences very carefully.
Exactly. I know Joey is taking it from the perspective of a Japanese watcher first, but many viewers of One Piece or people I have gotten into One Piece watched the dub first. So it'll appeal to an English/Western Audience more. Like you said, the goal of these projects is to expand the reach of the IP to broader audiences. I could then see something like a very high quality animated movie come out for it later on and do even better because of the developed fan base(next One Piece Movie).
I am absolutely watching. I've been following this since they announced it. The cast alone is so passionate and has so much love for the project. The actor that plays Luffy full on cried watching the trailer. The actor that plays Sanji trained so much to get Sanji's fighting style right. I have seen all the outpouring of love that has gone into this so i will watch. Even if it flops no one can deny that they actually did try and do justice to our beloved series, and as a One Piece fan i am so very grateful for that.
Just cause they "like it" doesn't mean they've read it. If they don't get the characters its going to show. Budget that big should have a certain level of quality
I'm going to give this a watch. Hopefully better than other live action anime shows. I really want to see Mihawk vs Zoro. I'm wondering how the special effects will be for Buggy's Devil Fruit power.
Buggys will be very simple, it just needs a green suit and clothing where the body parts end. It is Luffys stretching that is going to be hard, especially when it comes to the face.
I honestly loved it! The casting couldn't have been any better, the costumes and scenarios are detailed, and the CGI looks pretty pretty decent. That combined with Oda's input and the fact that the directors and cast are really passionate about one piece and we could have a really good adaptation. Of course, we will never know until the full show actually drops, but hey, it's still one piece in another format, and I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it
Don't agree with the casting. Don't get me wrong, they probably do a great job but they look too old and if we will get several seasons they will be old as hell.
@@littleDainolfhere all fairly young but I see where your coming from. It would probably take them about a year or even two to produce a new season and going off of how much this is producing it would probably be 10 seasons. There is deaging stuff nowadays though.
I'm mainly concerned about how they've written Luffy's character. All the others I was like ok yeah that's believable but they gave Luffy a lot of typical quips that happens in American comedy and I'm concerned they couldn't let go of traditional American show traits that it's gonna ruin the show.
Luffy's character is really hard to get honestly. He's the embodiment of freedom. From the trailer he sounds too childish. While Zoro looks dope af he seems too serious here. One of his best traits is his loyalty to Luffy.

Dude you are the first one to say you're glad they kept Sanji's eyebrows normal, there are actually people up in arms about that. I'm on your side though, I think there was no way they were going to be able to make that look as natural as Zorro's hair.
yea people are bitching a lot about Sanji's eyebrows and Usoop's nose, but it would look ridiculous. I guarantee if they stuck to the original design the very same people would complain about Sanji's eyebrows and Usopp's nose
Okay, now we need Joey to react to the actual released One Piece series - either on this channel or on Anime Man. Season 1 was fckin awesome ngl. It's soo good that I can't wait for Season 2
I feel like the made Buggy scary intentionally since this was the one point in the story where he was a threatening villain. Also, maybe they could have slightly curved Sanji's eyebrows up at the ends. It would have felt distint without being a visual disaster.
the guy playing Luffy is so good and such a sweet guy. I highly recommend watching the video of the cast reacting to this trailer, he literally bursts into tears of joy and breaks down
Mackenyu who’s playing Zoro was also the actor who played Enishi from the Rurouni Kenshin live action films and those were good! He also knows a few different martial arts/fighting techniques, and the son of Sonny Chiba. So as far as his acting and fighting action ability he’s sound. We’ll have to see how the others hold up when the One Piece live action is released, but I have high hopes.
Agreed, Speed Racer it's the most Anime like Live Action to date, super nich and underrated. I think this OPLA it's going to be in de middle with the wacky stuff and the drama combine.
The main thing I'm worried about from this trailer is how Luffy is written and going to come across as. The trailer leaned pretty heavily into his goofy/comedic side, but most of that comes from how unhinged and aloof he is. Hopefully that comes across. Other than that, it doesn't look that bad, the sea king looked really good.
It's funny because my main concern with the live action before the teaser was the visuals, not the story and character writing. The lead writer for this project is Matt Owens, who's been on a few one piece podcasts talking about his role. He's a huge fan of the series with an enormous amount of respect to the source material. Obviously there will be changes, there has to be. Not all of One Piece's humor can translate one to one into live action without seeming too tacky. There will likely be some tweaks to characters (Sanji probably won't be as perverted for example) but I have faith that they'll accurately capture the heart and essence of the characters. From the teaser, the visuals look solid! Obviously, One Piece is a fantastical series and we'll have to see how the full product looks in action once it releases, but it certainly could be much, much worse.
I heard this was going to be 8 episodes each being 1 hour, i think its going to end either at Logue Town or Reverse Mountain since we get to see the scene where each crew member puts there feet on the barrel. Each actor from the main crew looks dope really excited for Zoro since i know what the actor has played in. My biggest issue is what the fishmen are going to look like but besides all of that it looks great.
Could be wrong but they have not cast characters like Dragon and Smoker, so I think they're going to change it so the dreams/barrel scene happens after Arlong Park but before Logue Town. Or maybe change how Logue Town goes, but I cant see it without Smoker as he was such an important part of that arc.
The actor who plays Arlong has said they used make up and physical additions for the fishmen, but considering what they did with Buggy's make-up, that could be pretty cool. At least they're not using CGI - I like the idea of it being more physical than not.
They'll probably end just before or after going over the Red Line. Before even mentioning Chopper, they didn't show Vivi and shes introduced immediately after the Red Line with Laboon. It's pretty hard to believe that they wouldnt include her in the show if they are going to go that deep into the story.
Episode 8 (the final episode ordered to be made for this season) is titled Grand Line, so if vivi appears at all this season, it might be in one of the final shots of that episode.
@@iansommer1046 i cant imagine how theyre gonna cgi the grand line lol, I feel like itd be cool to end it looking at the grandline, so that the next if ever movie (i highly doubt) can start with them flying down the water, maybe 4 kids can remove laboon again
The head writer Matt Owens is a HUGE OP fan, I think he did his best to do it justice. He mentioned when he started he thought if there was going to be a live-action for One Piece he knew he had to be the one to do it so he knows it will truly be the best it can be with the budget and resources available. Oda is also extremely involved in the whole production, and not involved as in given a random 'role' so they can say he's involved. Oda was one of the people who made the final decision for the Strawhat's casting, he also reviewed the storyboards and scripts of every episode and gave them feedback on it before it got the greenlight to be filmed and he had the final say on when they can release the season.
Thank you for saying the bits about sanji's eyebrows and usopp's nose! Tiktok is driving me nuts about the hate hype bandwagon even though it looks like oda and the crew really made their choices consciously. I really hope this series will work out and be fun to watch. That's all i want after all, to simply enjoy it for what it is.
After seeing the director appear on many different streams, i can see that this guy knows what he is doing. I have high hopes for this, i'm not asking for a 1 to 1 recreation of a story i already know, all i ask is that the spirit of the series is represented to the fullest.
I watched Nuxtaku's interview with the director and he seems like a genuine fan of the series and fully understands why so many live-action adaptations fail. He's fully aware, and I'm just glad to see that is holding true.
There are definitely some comedic vibes (and certain scenes) that are sort of anchored to the characteristics of their original designs that will have to be omitted, unfortunately, like with Usopp's nose. Will be interesting to see their take on a more "realistic" version of the crew. Personally the only real gripe I have with the trailer as a whole is how much the serious tone clashes with the first season, which seems apparent that this is where it'll take place. Went from "Lets make friends and have a grand adventure to obtain the one piece!" to "TONIGHT... WE DINE... IN HELL!"
My only issues are Nami's wig, which looks really unnatural, the color grading which I thought would make the colors pop up more, and the Gum Gum Pistol at the end. Luffy looks too stiff, it seems like his arms just elongates on its own while he's supposed to give momentum to his arm (dunno if it's the right word), like he should have used his whole body to swing his arm backward to make it look more powerful. I'm still pretty satisfied with this teaser tho, I'm genuinely in awe with Buggy's look, he's so terryfying omg. He was the character I was looking foreward the most in this series, and I don't think I could be more satisfied
I feel like many "anime" fans didn't like this first look because it doesn't look serious. But as a One Piece fan for over 20 years, One Piece is campy and about the adventure. Yes there are serious themes and undertones, but Oda works to ensure that it's still a joy to read every week. The costumes and looks for the main crew look good so far. For people that prefer the subbed anime, all you would need to do is watch it with the Japanese audio and translated subtiles(which are mostly expansive across language offerings and good quality from Netflix). Finally, I liked the CGI. Everything we saw looked right for the setting of One Piece with the blend of live action. For people that don't like it.... please share an example of better CGI that would fit the narrative of One Piece. Oda made a public statement confiming that he was hard at work on this project and that he had final say for when it was ready to be released. Oda only agreed to doing this if he had significant involvement and if he got final sign off. So far I'm hopeful for the project. I just hope that people's expectations don't go sky high for no reason.
I don't know why anyone would want a serious and grim Onepiece. Though I wish they reduce the cringe. It works in animation but is terrible in live action. Onepiece should be a comedic action adventure about a group of friends much closer to a family
As Eiichiro Oda is directly involved with this i dont think the story would be that bad. And another thing the costumes are all canon they have taken a lot of Cover Story images. There's also a lot of things to see like you missed Garp's ship. They added some sbs stuff too. So hopefully they will be very considerate of the fanbase as Matt Is a One Piece fan. Hope it does well.
I love the chemistry. I love that they all seem to kind of hate each other and that they lamp-shaded the attack name thing. Because I think they had to. But I don't think the stretching looks good. I have to see on a big screen when the VFXs are finished. But I also saw a reactioner make the point that the pan and slo-mo we see in the trailer is probably the best look we will see of it. Because of the elastic of Luffy's rubber, it will probably be so fast you can barely see what's happening. My biggest concern is how theyre going to fit the whole Saga Blue into 8 episodes
I dunno , the whole unwilling at first allies thing , is overdone in any holywood movies (especially even more since the success of Avengers) ... i could do without it . I could see yeah Nami and Zorro not vibing at first , but they are pretty much supposed to be charmed by Luffy's candor and good nature . Of course , it might still be there , it's a teaser edit , so who knows how those scenes actually truy unfold ... but i hope it's not gonna be the tone for that starting crew for multiple episodes
@@helck1153 Except then , she was not already on a boat with him , and had not joined the crew yet . Everyone had either a bit of friction with Luffy or a priority quest before joining , but when they were in, they were in . This is not really the same as those overdone and generic “ We can't stand each other , but gotta work together “ vibes from the usual live shows and movies . Which is what i get from the teaser . Granted i'm passing judgement on a few seconds and just a teaser , but that's all i can react to , for now .
Showrunner has previously stated that season 1 will encompass only the East blue saga. Also I think jarring is the best way to put it for my first watch through. I think the best way to think of it as this is an adaptation and not a live action remake, which means certain things like some of the humor, attack names, and stuff like that will be definitely changed a bit to better suit the wider audience while keeping the spirit of the story intact. Highly recommend checking out Matt Owens talking about it with some of the big one piece RUclipsrs like rogers base and Randy Troy
Honestly looks pretty decent. Zoros design is killer, they definitely made the right choice casting wise but im a bit worried about being able to express things the anime did in the same way witj live action or how they are going to do it.
the cowboy bebop tragedy not all anime fans know about it because in some countries there is no hype for anime, if one pice live action becomes a tragedy then the damage can be close to the dragon ball live action tragedy or even avatar the legend of aang tragedy because of the hype
I have a feeling zoro and sanji will be the determining factor whether this series will be ok/decent or a flop. I legit perked up when zoro was on screen. Plus the fight choreography looks good from that snippet. Since it is one piece I'll check it out. Hopefully it'll be good
I am so happy that zoro going to have a decent choreographed fight. because most of his fights in the manga is just him doing cool poses and looking like a badass
I agree, going from the iconic Japanese voices to unknown English ones is strange as hell. Hopefully it's something we can get used to, but I'm not gonna be bothered if the live action fails
It would have been so, so much worse if he spoke Japanese. It would feel way more off than this. You'll get use to English, it's not like Japanese is inherently better somehow.
I agree but let that be the problem. We are all used to the japanese voices, but this has really nothing to do with the live action in any way , shape or form
For the German version they actually managed to get all the German anime voice actors to voice these actors. Which is actually pretty hype and now I'm able to at least give it a try and might even prefer to watch it dubbed.
I think a lot of people overlook the fact that these characters aren't all from the same place. they are recruited from different islands. Oda himself has even said what their nationalities would be, and that's what they used as reference for the characters. of course they dont look like the anime but they did a good job with casting imo
I think I heard it's gonna end somewhere around them reaching Grandline, I'd say maybe Reverse mountain arc. Which would be perfect as it would end something like "Our adventure has just begun, stay tuned." kinda thing. I even think that could be better than starting to adapt the whole Vivi multiple arc and ending it midway through that. Which would be another smart move than ending it before Drum Island arc.
We are all nervous- expectedly. But let's be real here: this is the best chance to get an actually good live action adaptation of this manga. Netflix has the ressources for make decent cgi and with oda looking over the project, we just have to pray and hope for the best 🙏
If the Zoro actor pulls off the emotions Zoro showed in his first encounter with Mihawk in the manga/anime, then this is gonna be one of his defining roles ever I'm sure
The dude who plays zorro brought so much emotion to Enishi in the kenshin live action
I have faith in him
Trust the plan, brotha 🙏🙏🙏🙏
But sometime producer and director just amke it bad, with their direction of acting, he also stared in knight of zodiac which is dumpster fire
In dub ? Nah it’s gonna be bad especially in live action
Love that they are wearing outfits inspired by Odas color pages e.g. Luffy and Usopp wear the outfits from the cover of Vol 11
I love that it looks like they're not gonna stay in the same outfit all the series, wardrobe is a great and subtle way to expand on their characters!

Ohh that's why they cast Luffy a Mexican/South American actor for this? That's great. I'm hoping this is good
@minchi_the_aoigirl yes exactly the casting choice is actually canonical. It's because we're used to either all Japanese or all white sounding voice actors in the anime that it feels weird that's what I thought at first so the first thing I did was Google what are their Canon ethnicities
Brook Austrian, Chopper Canadian, Jinbei Indian

I think it’s a little strange, how they made Zorro’s hair look more natural than Nami’s, when you can have red/orange hair in real life.
Shanks has red-red hair in this
I agree. Something about Nami's hair looks a little too much like a wig in a way that it shouldn't since like you said, orange hair is a natural possibility
I dunno man, as far as all of my friends who have dyed hair, the roots growing out after not being able to dye it again for a while is pretty damn realistic
the trailer is supposedly over a year old, in the new screen grabs her hair looks really good
Yeah. Her hair bothered me the most in the entire teaser. The texture doesn't look right.
Honestly, that gag might be even better in live action if they give him the shittiest, most unrealistic, and most inaccurate drawing possible to get pissed about
And then Zoro can still call him curlybrow because of the poster

@@Isaac_eins looking at the cast list, season 1 wil probably cover the entirely of east blue

If ever chopper is gonna be adapted I hope they would make him look as good as the live action pikachu
That would be too costly for a series, there are three possibilities:
1. they use a costume and puppets, that they could do really really really well as it is reutilizable.
4. Bring in Nora Gitsune as Fake Chopper.
i hope they could figure this out
I LOVE Usopp and Zoro’s look. They are exactly how I’d imagine a live version of their character to be

Yeah there’s like three arcs between where this season will end and when Chopper is introduced

The more "scary" buggy also fits a lot with how he was when he was introduced
I like they specifically mentioned why Luffy calls out his attack names, otherwise it would be very weird for a non anime audience. Maybe he just does it a few times as an homage.
If they can capture the contrast between Buggy's scary appearance with the reality of how weak he is then they'll knock his portrayal out of the park. If you think about it, he would have to be incredibly intimidating to fool so many people into thinking he's powerful.
I would have liked to see a subtle swirly eyebrow and a restrained prosthetic nose.
Not as crazy as the anime but distinctive enough.

That's what turned me off when i first watched the anime. Why watch a 26 eps long series when only 4 episodes are relevant to the story?

I get the impression that the calling out of attacks will be a Luffy specific trait that characters like Zoro will roll their eyes at. If that's true, I think it's a good call.
Nah, i reckon after Zoro shuts him down, that will be the only time he ever says it in the series. Just a little easter egg for the fans.

After watching it a bunch of times, you get used to it and honestly I'm even excited about it. I'm still not expecting TOO much from it of course. All I want is the humor, the emotion to be there. What?
Yup, given that Matt Owens is a huge one piece fan, I believe he can atleast capture the essence of one piece in the show.
anime in general doesnt translate well to live action, restrictions of LA vs Animation is the largest factor imho.
that said, as you stated, if the director is a huge fan, and Oda the mangeka himself was involved heavily in this the ESSENCE of it can be captured.
i am not a One Piece fan, just couldnt get into it, but theres a lot of hope that others could be adapted well if this one is. Of course with the mangeka as well.
Sounds like copium
unfortunately passion won't save live action adaptation. animation is what makes anime anime, and removing that is a guarantee that it's not gonna be good
The key thing that will make or break this is the writers
i feel like one thing that Joey didn’t really mention is that Oda was involved in every single part of the show, even the producers said that if Oda wasn’t satisfied they wouldn’t go through with it until he was. So the fact that we are seeing the trailer means that Oda has given the thumbs up to release the trailer.
As a complete 180 with Cowboy Bebop, that was more of a Fan project, while this Live Action has been in production for the last 6 years.
Also, there will be 8 episodes and each one will be about an hour long

The voice is nostalgic but what Luffy is saying there is what Luffy would never say in any universe
That's the only way I imagine it to be right too, so I agree.
Agreed, it's still weird to see the stretching, but i'm hoping it's one of those things that as you watch it you get used to it.
@@flochforster6892 I imagine they will use the og voice actors to dub over for Japan, so if it really bothers you that might be one way around it.

Always remember, when Buggy was introduced he was a SAVAGE. A real threat who got beat by Nami's quick wit in combination with Luffy's strength

Doubt you'll see this, but Luffy and Usopp's different outfits are ones that are from colorspreads Oda drew back in east blue, also it'll be 8 episodes and will end around Logue town which is practically around 100 chapters, meaning the cliffhanger thing and all should be no problem.

The main cast being super excited abt it is definitely a plus for me.
Don't worry even if it is completely terrible it will at least get 2 seasons. The IP is to big to fail outright.

Seems like anime fans don't know about the concept of "Camp" and this looks very campy, One Piece is already very campy, ridiculous and over the top.

I’d say that the best live action adaptation for anime was the Speed Racer movie. If One Piece live action can do that, then it will be amazing.

What kinda reasoning is that..
gintama?
Gintama and Rurouin Kenshin live action adaptions were the best I've seen so far, but Speed Racer was really good, too
The main thing I'm worried about from this trailer is how Luffy is written and going to come across as.

@@xmugiwara528That would be the worst take they have since Logue Town is one of the iconic Arc in the One Piece
@@dandanranah im pretty sure they said the entirety of along saga which includes lougetown so its prolly gonna end at lougetown
Low-key hoping they end with a teaser to Vivi, like show her blue hair or something, and then it cuts. Literal red line cliffhanger
I think it ending at the grand line entrance would make sense
@@iansommer1046 the info is about the 8 episodes that were released
@ZarathosDaimaoh If you rewatch Buggy arc, Nami really really hated Luffy because he was a pirate.
I'm nervous because of the Cowboy Bebop tragedy but optimistic knowing how involved Oda was behind this.
the cowboy bebop tragedy not all anime fans know about it because in some countries there is no hype for anime, if one pice live action becomes a tragedy then the damage can be close to the dragon ball live action tragedy or even avatar the legend of aang tragedy because of the hype
I havent seen one piece at all but this looks pretty cool. At least i can hope it ends up being good so all the one piece fans can enjoy it.
Luffys actor is mexican. So he has the slight accent going on. The kid is sooooo happy to be playing luffy.
I have a feeling zoro and sanji will be the determining factor whether this series will be ok/decent or a flop. I legit perked up when zoro was on screen. Plus the fight choreography looks good from that snippet. Since it is one piece I'll check it out. Hopefully it'll be good
Yeah same, and the short clip of Sanji kicking also looks good.
I’m sure Mackenyu won’t disappoint you with his performance! 💚
I am so happy that zoro going to have a decent choreographed fight. because most of his fights in the manga is just him doing cool poses and looking like a badass
Sanji's actor is a martial artist and a chef. We getting a real Sanji here
@@EM-ju4yy Wait fr? Thats so funny and perfect
@@aaaaaa-gq3dv I didn’t say Japanese was better. It’s just a bigger change going from know Japanese voices to unknown English ones
Ha das wusste ich nicht. Das ist ziemlich nice :)
I am in love with the cast, so I am really rooting for this to turn out at least okay
11:15 i feel like you can sense the actor's passion for the character in the way he says the lines
