I've been looking forward this video for weeks! Just about to start it now...loving the first 2 mins already 🙂 Just finished watching it. This is such a beautifully put together video...informative, relaxing, ... I could watch this style of video all day long! Well done!
@@docteurmoteur I've got a 1996 DR650SE myself as well as a '07 GSXR 750 for track days so quite a similar set of bikes to you. My DR650 is currently in bits having the frame re-powder coated. I've watched all your videos so far and I must admit that the things i keep wondering about that would be great to know are: a. What happened to his DR650 engine that required it to be rebuilt? b. Will he be rebuilding/restoring the rest of his DR650? e.g. Carb, frame, suspension, building new wheels, etc c. Who is this guy and what is the rest of his channel going to be about? Love the idea of seeing you do other engines but equally it would be great to see more on your DR650 if they are of the quality you've been doing so far... 🙂
@@OVB_NL Gsxr 750 is one sweet ride😉 My dr650 is an 01’ model; the carb and air box are stock and I don’t plan on “upgrading” that aspect of things. I have custom TFX suspension (front & rear). I’m tearing down the engine to install a NOVA gearbox. As to what’s next on the channel; I’ll only be rebuilding engines. Mainly super sport engines; think Yamaha r6 or r1. However, you guys will also see a fair shareI of smaller CC 4 stroke and 2 stroke dirt bike engines.
Exelente video amigo bendiciones, tambien estube eesperando esta cotinuacion gracais por compartir todo tan aldetalle .💪 me los vere desde el comienso 😅 Dr650
Quick question- are you removing both sides of the plastic bearing shields or just one? Awesome video by the way, I’m sure I will watch it 1,000 times or more when it comes time to rebuild my DR.😂 Also, are you cleaning out the grease they come packed with?
Haha, thanks for watching. Remove one seal only. For the grease, it's hard to remove all of it. I don't bother changing it as engine oil will flush it away, however you can decide to wipe the accessible grease off the surface of the bearing and adding some bearing specific grease. Use heat and cold when installing the bearings. Bearings in the freezer one hour before installation, and heat the bearing hole a good minute before dropping it in. Make sure to drop them in flush, especially the OEM bearing with the pin.
No special tools needed for the re-assembly apart from a clutch basket holder. For the disassembly you'll need a crankcase splitter tool and a fly wheel puller along with the clutch basket holding tool. You'll also need a ring nut socket for the crankshaft if you plan on replacing the bearing on the ring nut side. Don't attempt rebuilding the engine without JIS (japanese industrial standard) screw end bits and an impact screwdriver. Apart from that you'll be able to rebuild the engine with regular sockets, allen keys, wrenches etc. A breaker bar will save you some time and a good set of torque wrenches are essential. You'll need additional special tools to measure engine components.
Mate thank you so much for this. I'm about to buy a dr650 with 50k km on it and figured I'd be up for this soon. How much did you spend on this rebuild mate?
Thank you for watching. 50k kms or miles? The only reason I rebuilt the engine was to install the NOVA gearbox. The rebuild cost me roughly a grand euro. That's new springs, washers, seals, bushings, bearings, gaskets, OEM piston and rings. That grand isn't taking into consideration the cost for tools and the NOVA Gearbox. All in all, if you buy well and you don't change the gearbox you're looking at 1K euro for the rebuild.
@@docteurmoteur Its 50k km! The engine sounds ok and no noticeable ticking when starting. Just thinking I'll be up for a rebuild soon and came across this researching it! Thanks for the breakdown mate! Really much appreciated on that!
@@OddClancy You're OK for another 50 k kms. With that being said, it can't hurt to open the engine up and check inside. Especially the transmission; my gears had noticeable pitting. It could be a fun winter project. I can answer your questions if you have additional ones.
@@docteurmoteur Incredible I can still take this one for another 50k Ks Id love to do it over winter and get in there and tinker with it. Great idea! I'm just worried in buying into a tired engine when compared to something with 20k KMs. It's got all the bells and whistles and extras that an adventure bike needs. just that hanging over the sale. Ever considered a bigger bore kit as well? Appreciate the replies once again.
This will be my background tv for the next year or so now. Thankyou for uploading, very satisfying and informative
Thanks for watching!
