After 8 years, the RUclips Algorithm had decided that I'm finally mentally prepared to learn the truth about square watermelons. While my heart is heavy from the disappointment, I take solace in knowing that eggplant-shaped plantains are real and taste wonderful.

A couple of weeks ago it showed me the truth about bananas. They are all clones from one that had no seeds...the thing is I wasn't mentally prepared to know that and till this day I can't stop thinking about the nightmarish pictures of the old bananas with seeds 😂😂😂

@@dineshkumarshukla8173 yeah but not tasty like round watermelons. We eat fruits so taste is the real matter or real beauty here. Packaging is not the main purpose and general people don't waste money for such watermelons which have just good shape but don't have any good taste.

I wonder what would happen if they let the watermelon keep growing after achieving the shape and taking to metal form off. Would it grow to be completely round/oval or retain some squareness?
I think it would become a mix of square and sphere.
So *"SQUPHERE"* .

They mentioned the watermelon can easily crack. I’m thinking they cut it off the vine as soon as it has become cube-shaped to minimize risk of cracking. Almost like you’re blowing up a balloon too large and it could pop. However, I am curious what would happen if they changed the size of the cage little by little to get a larger one. Would it be more ripe and less of an ornamental plant? Would it keep its shape or crack?
@@seanmcpherson2801 They also mentioned @ 0:41 that because of low rainfall the harvest wasn't that much. So I guess increasing the size would obviously be a gamble.
@@neiltsakatsa the harvest has more to do with the number of watermelons rather than size. The size they picked was so that it would fit perfectly in refrigerators. Any bigger, and they won't fit.

Square watermelons were a novelty back around the late 1970s. Some grocery stores stacked them on top of each other. The novelty died out, and today, as this video points out, not many Japanese farmers are willing to go to the extreme amount of labor to get square melons.
They look awesome!

"Ordinary watermelons are 3-4 times cheaper" - so $25 for a watermelon? Unavailability of fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the bigger downsides of Japan
I just spent over 30 USD (4000 yen) for a watermelon in Japan. Fruit is so expensive here. But you either pay or just miss out.
@@samiamagainagain but why tho it’s not like it’s 30$ for the best thing ever it’s just a watermelon some cheap fuit that taste nothing. Seriously at 30$ you get tenderloin + all you need for a sauce and veggies why spend that much on a fruit that taste water
@@bobmorane2082 Because that's our only option here in Japan. That, or growing it ourselves, which we are doing by the way. But with one large watermelon, I make about 30 smoothies so it's worth it to me and my kids to buy one before our garden watermelons are ready.
They are like $1.7/lb, a $25 watermelon would be quite large. That's the same price we pay in germany for off-season watermelons from south america.
@@samiamagainagain Definitely if I lived in Japan I would to the same thing the US Army did during WWII and set up a hydroponic system to grow all my produce. Considering how technologically open Japan is, I'm surprised they don't do more hydroponic stuff like here in America in the north.

I don’t think most people in this comment section understand that fruits(along with a range of other items) in Japan don’t serve only the purpose of being fruits/food. They are often a sign of status and appreciation.
A status sign because they charge *so much* more for the best looking fruits, like perfectly shaped vivid-red strawberries and the square watermelons. And not everyone has the money to spare on something like that instead of buying something that is useful(actual food, clothes, etc).
An exemple on how it’s a sign of appreciation can be noticed if you look at the end of the video, there’s perfect looking melons with ribbons on the shelf, their purpose is to serve as gifts to show someone you appreciate them.
Minecraft: Get my lawyer on the phone.
The Japanese way, "How to turn an abundant and cheap source of food, into something expensive and inedible."
I take offense to this. Sushi was fast food in japan. Until AMERICANS (which I am) drove up the price of it. Also think about Japan. Do you see tons of space to grow produce? So land to grow is very expensive considering there is almost no free land. Japan is very tiny. Which is why the prices are very high.
magebotjz2 That's my point exactly. They already don't have a lot of land, yet they waste it by growing watermelons that cannot be eaten for ornamental purposes. Oh yes, sushi is still considered fast food, that doesn't mean it's not expense. Btw, how much does a Mcdonald's Big Mac cost in Japan now? Last time I was there I seem to recall it was about 900 yen, which was about $9 at the time.
Better than Debeers: How to turn a worthless rock that's only good for keeping saws sharp into the most iconic symbol of love in the world, then use that value to fuel war.
The Japanese aren't the only ones trying to inflate the value of objects in food. All you've proved with your comment is that you are a racist by tying this act of wastefulness exclusively to Japan (which is dumb in itself because just because a few people in Japan thought it was a good idea, apparently it means all of Japan thought it was a good idea)
Btw, beef is expensive in Japan, which is why big-macs are so expensive, and its more of a novelty food of "this is what American's eat". Which makes me questions why the hell you were in a Mc Donalds in Japan anyway.
Wait, they normaly cost 100 dollars and the round ones are 3-4 times cheaper...so a normal round watermelon is still 25dollars???!!
Apparently, lol
4$ here in Iraq :)
Lol 2.50$ here in saudi arabia , plus noodle is 0.25$ , chips 0.25$ , pepsi n coke 0.50$

yes, we all know that dollars are worth more in other countries with worse economies.
less than 5 dollars in supermarkets here in México, around 3 in the farmer markets
If you make one in a pyramid shaped mold, the melon will have mystical healing properties.
Honestly I think it may be one of the best sarcastic fancy gifts to give someone, like wtf is someone supposed to do with a fruit that will eventually go off and they can't even eat? but they know it's expensive af and it was meant to be a gift so they have to pretend to like it lol.

Tourist: Japan ain't that weird
Japan: hold my square watermelon
If you cant eat it because its not ripe enough, Then why not build a bigger square box so it has more time to fill the space and get ripe. $100 bucks seems kinda steep for some damn square fruit. no matter how rare it is. It's one of those things you see like "cool" now what lol.
just a made up theory but i think its because if the case is to big it might not fill because watermelons dont grow bigger that certaint size. and letting it rip may let melons be prone to crack.
Shinron Vaynex yeah, I had that in mind as well. seems to be correct, well to each his own and if that's what some are into then who am I to judge. thanks for shedding a bit of light on this theory any how. take care
That was the first thing I thought of... make the box bigger you nimbwit... but hey, I dont think im artistic enough make that decision lol.
Because you can't justify a $100 food item, but you can justify it for an item for decoration.
Jordan Smith well why do you think they made it a square then? i dont think a normal water melon would fit, even if it does it will roll. if it were square it will fit easyer and wont roll. cant use a norm to justify something abnormal. besides i dont know about you but i like my melons cold ad refreshing.
