  • In this video I show an inexpensive method of etching glass. The materials that you need are a piece of glass, a box and quartz sand.

This is the kind of stuff you want on youtube, not the "ok now buy this and this glass etch material" stuff. Yeah I know I can buy that, I want to know a diy method, like yours. Thank you.

Thanks! I continue the topic of glass and in a few days I will have a video on how to cut pieces of glass with equal size.

Wow, such a simple AND cheap way to do this. I must try this with my Tessa (11)....awesome idea for our homeschool projects. Do you think she can shake for like 10 min, take a break, shake for 10, another break, shake for 10,,,lol Not sure she'd last 30 total min..... BUT, hey, we could hand off the box to other family members! This could be fun. :-) Thanks Edward

Yes this is a good home school project, learns how to be patient, because it takes time. You have to be sure that all the holes on the box are closed because it gets very dusty. You only have to use quartz sand, only quartz can scratch the glass. My sand was with large particles 2-5 mm, I made it from broken quartz stones. If you use fine sand with smaller particles, it may take more time to shake, but etching will be more precise. I think it's best to use plexiglas instead of glass, the glass has very sharp and dangerous edges! If you still want to use glass, scrubbed the edges of the glass with sandpaper in a bucket of water.

Instead of hand shaking for "very long time" I wonder what the result would be like using a tumbler. Im sure a tumbler can be made easily with a motor :)

Large pieces of quartz sand. It is important to be quartz, other types of sand are softer and it becomes even slower

considering what he did, with what he used, the beautiful even distribution of the micro chips in the etch, the fact that he implied it was a simple demo, i consider the work "top." fine, even, relatively, and a fine art technique to advance concepts through, or get wealth.
