    For the record I bought the OI cd when i was 13 in 2003. It used to motivate me so much, I listened to it skiing and would fearlessly fly down the mountain. I loved the messages of love in the songs and so fined tuned. Tim Armstrong is still in the game and still sounds amazing all these years later. Hats off to OI and Rancid.

      I agree. A few people keep talking about Tim is affected and fake, I think both Tim and Lars are great. No tough guy or too-cool attitude... They just seem sweet and real. Sure they wear the punk uniform, but they were a huge part of popularizing that uniform and are punk AF to this day. They are part of a subculture and at that time and still in some places now, that subculture is real and important to lots of people. Here he is still doing his thing- they were the first band I ever saw in 1995 and I would jump to see them now... ruclips.net/video/C_l2xuL3F8A/видео.html

    I remember being this little 13-year-old kid all lost and seeing this interview. It was so awesome to listen to music and look like I didn't give a f*** all the while that music was giving positive messages that resonated all the way to where I am today. Somehow I went from living in parks doing drugs traveling all across the country joining the army going in fighting for my life let alone the country I just wanted to survive. To having a home in the suburbs and becoming middle class. But I get to go see these Legends finally in August at the palladium Boston to Berkeley I will see you there and I can't f****** wait. Through all my many miles across this planet I have never been close enough to catch a show and I will see you every year you come here for the rest of my life. That's why I got the out come the wolves tattooed on me 14 years ago. Absolute Legends and I hope I get to meet them in person one day

    Fuck! It hurts so bad to see this. Nostalgia for those 90s. I wish I could just walk back to 95 and hit the mall and just go crazy in the record shops which dont exist anymore.. and just find SO MUCH punk music. I would spend hundreds of dollars. Walk out with towers of cd's. Its hard to get over the punk explosion of 94-95... So much excellent music and even fashion. Before there was a Hot Topic in every mall, you had to dig in to find Doc Martens.

      Dookie helped A LOT. It paved the way for many great bands to be heard outside their cities. Just like Nirvana "Nevermind" did for punk in general. Even though it was and is a great punk album, I always treated it like a mainstream album. I owned it but was ashamed of it, if you know what I mean. I mean, we took pride in being punks and following underground bands. Smash was a different case because it came from Epitaph. And it was, to me, million times better than Dookie. Girls listened to Dookie. I mean it was more pop. And even though we were full of ourselves back then and didnt wanted to accept it, Dookie was a great album and it opened a lot of doors.

    • @nogoodbastid
      @nogoodbastid 4 года назад +3

      @@annasloan2349Yes, which is why they tried to keep it as secret as possible that they had signed to a major label. They also sold their music for use in commercials, which went against the beliefs of many mainstream artists at the time, let alone bands who considered themselves punk. So it's kinda laughable to claim Rancid never sold out. Rancid made some great albums, but it's not like they were taking on the man, bucking the system, doing things their own way. They worked just fine within the music industry like any other mainstream artist. They never took some strong stance or ruffled any feathers. Mohawks and spiked leather hadn't made anyone bat an eye in 15-20 years by the time Rancid came out. It was just a typical punk rock uniform by then. Where exactly is this punk rock integrity?

    • @annasloan2349
      @annasloan2349 4 года назад

      @@nogoodbastid you posted a great agrgument on why rancid is a sell out artist. From what i have gathered reading other comments and a little history info on the band i agree with you.
      Rancid as a whole were a typical "sell out" 90s band..not to say their music is bad, actually i really like their music and i like their sound and i believe that rancids sound is still listenable today. The early albums were some of the best "punk" albums to come out of the era...all my opinion.
      Seperate from the band, what i have heard of tim armstronge comes mostly from a few docs on punk and a few interviews from his ex wife. She claims he threatened her safety after she left him, not directly but through a large following of teens (armstronge fans/armstronge gang/not sure what she means by this but implies he has finatical fans who will do his bidding)
      I dont care so much about his personal life but it would seem he is extremely influential in California to this day if he has such a large following.
      Rancid must have made a lot of money selling their music for commercial use and probably have a small fortune from it. I remember one documentary i watched passed them completly over callling them pop punk and sellouts...it makes me wonder how much respect they get from the older punk community..

      awakeinsd yeah 4 years later, after they did drop another album “life won’t wait” then Tim founded his own label HellCat records. And that’s a sub-label of epitaph.

      I came here to post the same exact message. I was going to say that putting on his whole 'act' must get tiring. The guy tries SOOO hard to be 'different'. It is kind of sad. I've liked Rancid for like the last 20 years and all..but I've always his whole act very bothersome.

      Well, Most artists creates a persona to perform to mass media, probably is the way he found to entertain the public, sometimes you don't have the "personality" that makes you feel at ease. It can be a cool persona, polemic persona or in this case "weird persona", if it came a point that called your attention so that means he did a good job to entertain you since you keep saying that. It's marketing.

      Rancid (self titled) has always been their best album in my opinion. Detroit was the song that got me.
