Jocko, I read Discipline Equals Freedom and did your 4:30 am routine for 4 months, and it started me off on a great path towards discipline. I’ve been bulking up and increased my strength in weights. Now I’m my cutting phase I’ve lost over 6 pounds and my body fat so far fell from 21% to 18.6% Update: As of this month, I’ve lost 30 lbs of fat, body fat is now 12.5% and I’m getting stronger
I would do that except I gotta be up at 3 for work and leave the house by 4:30 😂 That's enough morning discipline for me lol. Evening workouts and runs for me. But good job brother! Keep at it, stay on the grind! Stay hard!!!
This is such a useful practice and it cannot be stressed enough. What I have learned to do is to Physically start doing something Before giving my mind a chance to complain which would otherwise lead to the 'software' freezing as you put it. If I have to do something I won't enjoy, I immediately take physical action to start it because I know that if I think about it I will freeze up and procrastinate - If you don't want to take out the trash, put your shoes on immediately, if you don't want to write a hard email, just start typing right away and don't let yourself stop. It works wonders and saves a lot of time you would otherwise spend trying to convince yourself to do something.
I have a similar understanding of this stuff. It's not so much getting yourself in the habit of doing a specific thing; rather, just doing A THING when you want or need to do it. It's also about breaking the habit of NOT doing the thing.
Haha I'm gonna need to do this at work. Work at a steel manufacturing plant, in the forging department. Driving a forktruck into a giant oven that's at 1,200 - 2,400°F is gonna be rough, but can't think too much about it I guess 😂 Just ignore the clothes burning and meshing with your skin! 👌
That part of Echo speaking on vacations as resets for chronic brain lock and Jocko stating, “Why aren’t you coming up with noble prize winning ideas on the regular basis homie? You should have cured cancer by now.” That was epic 💥😂
For me pro sports play offs are my reset. It's a break in routine for a few weeks, and i always try to come out of it with new energy/a new direction. I find because playoff games are on a set schedule every year, it's easy to swap from the winter rut to the summer routine.
i love that i get these video clips right when i’m about to go to bed every night. best thing to fall asleep too. a lil last minute knowledge before the night ends. thanks Jocko and Echo
Jocko literally just explains that this is the podcast and that he is sitting with echo charles, yet, he somehow manages to describe it as the most serious thing ever in a very dramatic way. If Jocko has a superpower, then this is it.
@Jacob Weeks I think you're the one sitting on a high horse who needs to relax, little buddy... Out here patrolling a youtube comment section and laying down the law regarding what others can and cannot say - Good luck with that! 😆
Setting timers/keeping lists, etc. is very important for me to keep up with my daily and weekly goals. I'm still old school in that I keep a legal pad on my desk broken down with each day and what I need to do on those days, including gym time, chores, etc. and then cross the item off the list once I'm done. It sounds weird, but that sense of knowing what is there to do and being able to have the satisfaction of clearing an item off the list keeps me focused. I know it's probably easier to do it electronically, but there's something about physically interacting with it, writing it down, that seems to imprint it in my brain better so I don't forget things. I do the same for workouts/fitness goals, I have a spreadsheet tracking weigh ins, fat/muscle %, personal bests on lifts/pushups, etc. Just makes it a bit easier to get through life when I have those things in order and know what I have to do later in the day/week.
Chucklehead and Knucklehead are always good for a laugh. Echo's all about that island life, Jocko's all about that timer. Best to aim for somewhere in the middle.
DEFINITELY need a reset. Going under for knee replacement (thanks Army, football and years of manual labor). Hopefully getting that barrier out of the way, and the routine of PT will provide that. I'm just old, broken, tired and sick of it all.
If you're feeling burnt out, stressed, or like you're constantly running on empty, it may be time for a reset. Some signs that you need to take a step back and recharge include feeling irritable, exhausted, and unmotivated, or experiencing difficulty sleeping and concentrating. Remember that taking time for self-care and reflection is not selfish - it is essential for your well-being and productivity. So if you're feeling like you need a reset, give yourself permission to take a break and focus on what you need to feel rejuvenated.
I have been in this situation, they call it analysis paralysis and I have been literally frozen for an extended amount of time trying to get to the correct decision. Very frustrating! Great Topic Guy's
I’ve been battling chronic brain lock recently…jacked my sleep regimen all up doing non-sense stuff. Instead of forcing things (which I did attempt), I decided to embrace what the cosmos was giving me. Before, I was an early riser 4:00am-5:00am and go to sleep 9-10pm. I stayed up way too late (or early rather) and pulled a few all nighters to where I found myself unable to fall asleep until 3-4am. After no luck forcing the earlier bedtimes, I decided as an experiment to embrace the new sleep schedule since that is what’s being given. I sleep like a baby now that I wait until my body signals truly needing rest. Productivity feels just as in-line. Looking back, feels like there’s so much in our heads thinking we need to do this or that, to a point where we get consumed by it all and don’t know who we truly are anymore. Should be interesting here forward, but the liberation that comes with just surrendering to the universe is one of the best deals in life I think I’ve ever made. Just the acceptance of oneself and nature’s forces around, feels very…appropriate.
I’ve had a lot on my mind, and I’ve overwhelmed myself thinking I have to do it all at once. So much that I moved from days work to graveyard shift. Lately I’ve been doing one thing at a time, starting with the most important and it’s been taking stress off of me.
I needed to hear this, I’ve been thinking about moving 2400 miles across the country, but it’s been hard to commit due to moving so far away fro everything and everyone I know. But I know it’s gonna be best for me in the long run.
I want to thank Jocko and Echo for helping me overcome my dentist fear. For 20 years I've taken meds to calm me before seeing the dentist. I would get uncontrollable shakes and go into panic attacks in the chair. Over time I was able to calm down with the regular tooth cleanings but I still needed meds for anything requiring the drill or shots. This last time I had decided that I think I could handle the visit without meds. Today, on the way to the dentist, I was beginning to feel a little nervous that I hadn't tried to get any meds. So I decided to say a quick prayer and listen to a few Jocko videos in the car as his videos always give me courage. I went into the dentist, had two small cavities filled, and I was completely calm. No issues at all. I feel like I overcame. Thank you.
i haven't reset or used Ctrl+Alt+Del in Windows in years, but then again I've build my PC and understand the basics. As long as you have good parts and drivers things just work if you keep them clean, updated and don't mess with thing you aren't supposed to, including in the internet. Good practices when using, help a lot, but yes a lot of that can have a parallel in our own lives. Turning off (not a Ctrl+Alt+Del or reset) is a must for any computer from time to time. Even the constant running hours can limit the years you can use since everything, including us, have a limited lifecycle. So, yes, we also need to switch off, reset, etc. or we burn up early!

I've been through a long list of very terrible things which have left me disabled. The only way I function, the only way... is to time everything and go from one thing right into the next and so on. I don't just function, I shine. However, as soon as I stop and left to my own devices I'm self destructive caught up in my head. So yes, putting yourself on a clock is extremely productive.
jocko was motivated in the same way david goggins was... by fear of being irrelevant. Like dude you're a former seal, go enter and win a shooting competition... nobody's stopping you from collecting from a talent that you used.
Just did this myself. The only caveat is you have to know yourself pretty well in order to pull off a hard reset. It's about knowing your Own psychology. What works for one person isn't going to work for another. If I told you what I did last night to reboot my brain, you wouldn't understand why that would work, and it probably wouldn't for you. I'm in recovery. For 3 years now I've noticed that whenever I would relapse, I would have a sort of mental/emotional reboot eventually and that would restart the process of recovery for me. Over time the lag between relapse & reboot shrunk. Eventually I was rebooting immediately after my relapses. RIGHT BACK on recovery road ! After seeing this process play out a bunch of times, I learned to leverage it myself before relapses. I now intentionally reboot my mind Every once in a while. When I feel like life isn't making any sense to me.
Setting a clock is one of the things that kernels actually do to pull up out of control processes. It's called a "watchdog timer". If you don't check in with that watchdog the kernel can say "you're fucked up" and tear down the process to stop it from affecting everything.
A reset on a PC refreshes your memory which matters less when you have 32gb or more but most people have 4-16GB. For a lot of people they will reset when updating drivers so they’ll feel like they never reset when they actually reset a lot.
That's actually a great analogy. The problem is of course being aware of when you're freezing up in the first place, otherwise how can you reset yourself? Computers are reliant on us resetting them when necessary, but in our case we usually don't have that external switch somebody can press for us. Operating System engineers include a number of precautions for the computer to reset or slow down and "unload" when it's getting overloaded with instructions, and the human equivalent of that could be practicing being mindful so that you're always aware of, and able to respond before your state of mind is about to hit a threshold and freeze up.
Do you remember F5? It would take you to a page behind a page behind a page to a black screen with a blinking box. The box could be blue or green depending on what your preference was and it just sat there blinking, blinking, blinking. That's where I Am Black, nomad's, space, blinking.
i lost all my friends when i stopped attending school during covid and graduated without any of them. I lost my gf of 3 years about a month ago she cheated and left me. I finally got a job after a year of little to no full time work. Now im quitting substance use and going through extreme withdrawals. I 100% need a reset and a proper routine.
Big one for setting timers. Been doing it for years - especially on tasks i will likely procrastinate on and Im easily distracted. The timer gives me a focus point. It also stops getting over involved (unless its really neccisary) and can also turn things into a game. - how much can i fix in the house in 45 minutes - im only going to sit in the office for 90 minutes - how many quotes can i get through? . Ive 10 minutes to get as much firewood stacked as i can. etc etc.
I am at a stage where I need to slam that button. I have accomplished a fair amount so far in my life at the age of 49 but I'm stuck in a poor routine of going work, having a good sense of accomplishment at work, then coming home and doing nothing. My wife and I drink Friday and Saturday night and that's it. I was in the best shape of my life a few years ago and would like to get back to that. I really would also like to do something more than what I am doing but it is so hard. When you talk about your brain freezing at the thought of performing "action" I can identify with that. I am writing this on RUclips right now thinking this is another form of procrastination. I have always struggled with this and somehow did really well with my life but I have never been happy with my level of procrastination.
To further elaborate, it has to do somewhat with the system it’s built on and that system’s memory management. The main reason for program errors(there are plenty others) is either corrupt or overrun memory. The programs running are usually ineffective in handling their own trash and side effects. In this sense restarting is a good solution but we may want to also use a different program mentally. The ones we are using are either inefficient or the system isn’t to spec to handle it long term. I’d be more concerned with having a solid operating system with efficient programs than have to wait until it has to be restarted regularly. So make sure the programs aren’t creating issue with the system so to speak, then a restart will likely never be needed.
I get the over all theme. 100% agree. Also, I don’t remember ever shutting down or restarting my MacBook Pro (M1) in years. That thing still operates at 100%
Man as an 18 year old kid, Jocko’s analogies are hard to wrap my head around. Also Echo’s movie analogies require research (but I discovered some good movies at least). I think these guys may be getting old but the way they go on a tangent to explain is definitely entertaining lol.
Hey Jacko, long time fan and 59 years old jits addict . This can’t be a coincidence… all day feeling crappy with so much to do as xmass is in two days . Decided to do what always works GYM . On my drive to the gym somehow this episode gets cued in … Frickish
I just have to create a playlist real quick... *A few moments later* Day is over and I've gone from two playlists to reinstalling my operating system. Also, the two playlists I used to have are gone. To be fair, I need a great playlist to get anything done, so this outcome isn't a surprise.
How Human Nature Works Human nature is the desire to receive, also called “desire to enjoy,” and it functions by receiving what is beneficial to itself and rejecting what is harmful. Everything in our lives is built upon this calculation where we first try to distance ourselves from harm, and then seek how to draw ourselves closer to what is beneficial. Human nature also includes a multilayering of systems that work simultaneously on still, vegetative, animate and human levels. One of those systems is our bodily one, which operates involuntarily. If our bodies are healthy, then they know what is good for them and draw that goodness to themselves. After the bodily system, there is the emotional system, which also functions relatively according to instinct. From the emotional system, we move to the mind, and from the mind to the intellect, and so on. That is, we have systems over systems that concurrently work on receiving what is beneficial and rejecting what is harmful. Such is human nature and the essence of our lives. Our every desire, thought and action operates according to the calculation, “How can we receive what is most beneficial to us and reject what is harmful?”
The clock thing he mentioned. Setting timers for everything. I used to have issues being late. Even if it’s just 1 or 2 minutes , but since I’ve been setting timers, I haven’t been late since
The first thing I do when I walk into work is something I do every single day without fail: I conduct a NBS-BFA - aka: a "no bull-shit battlefield-assesment." "Are we winning or losing? Do WE control the battle-space or does the enemy? Do we need to throw additional resources at this situation or do we have it handled? Should we order an engagement or do we need to fall-back and recover? Do we need artillery support, air-cover, medics? Are we winning? Can we win? What is the: NO-BULLSHIT situation on the ground?"
There's that old saying: the first step to not digging your grave is to: stop digging. When you're the U.S. Military and movies have taught you that you're going to win every engagement you every fall into... it's important to have someone in a position of command and communication that can recognize - we're getting our ass kicked and we need help.
If you ever find yourself in command of other people - you shouldn't retract, but you also need to remember: there are guys 200 meters down the beach that are getting blasted out of motar-holes by the craziest RPK fire the world has ever heard of... meanwhile, you're collecting sea-shells with Shelly on the sea-shore.
Echo’s orating and vocab is next level from the early episodes. Still love the pidgin accent but his conversation game has improved exponentially. 💪💪💪💪 nice work big fella
"Sleep on it" Phrase exists in every culture for a reason. If you have a problem let a night of your brain reconfiguring and refreshing itself help solve it. Many enterpruers solve problems in their dreams.
I thought Jocko was going to suggest taking a nap or going to sleep to reset. I find that def refreshes my mind/emotions than taking an action unless that action is to detach and take a breath.
Windows, mac and linux all have their own kernel. A kernel is a lower layer of software that boots to control hardware like Memory, CPU etc. Computers are like layers of software on top of other layers, the higher up the layer, the more complex, abstract or human user experience orientated it is. Layers are like a way of not having to start from scratch, every time you build an app. You can tap into or access lower code or processes that are open source (shared). Like an Essay referencing a book in a Library. Computers are basically like library's with 1000's of books (files/code). THE OSI model = 7 different layers.(its a good diagram to visualise whats going on)
I agree with this one hundred percent but I will add something that I do in my personal life because it's actually based on the same idea of a computer reset. The first step is that you have to cut power. So that means for a designated period of time be at 5 hours 10 hours and in some cases 24 hours but no more than 24 hours. Indian store Gathering the information again. In designated periods of time you story collecting the information and moving towards your goal you might even have to break your goal down into 10 different parts and say okay I have 10 hours for this part I have 3 hours for this part and so on. Thank-you Jocko and Echo this is great content
Great analogies here and a lot of great mind inducing, thought processing done here with these two SEALS/gentlemen. Some big things to take in mind here
For a good analogy of why turning your electronics off and on again works in case you're wondering: You know your way from your home to the shop, but you accidentally take a wrong turn and continue to try to correct it but now you're lost and have no idea how to get to the shop, or how to get home. If someone were able to put you back home, assuming nothing goes wrong, you should now know the way to the shop again from here. Turning off the computer puts everything back home so it knows the way to the shop again.
Hes kind of right about this for Opiate addiction. And its so wicked hard because you get so sick and so weak and so depressed. But its true as far as addiction goes. And your brain just doesnt let you go. Doesnt let you out of it.

Regarding intermittent fasting, does the fast have to be a contiguous 8 hours? Can I eat breakfast, skip lunch, have an afternoon snack, and hours later have dinner?
Jocko bought a Mac just to have a command key
Without Jocko, Apple would not have made a command key :)

That is the best thing I've ever heard 😅 good one. So true

jocko was motivated in the same way david goggins was... by fear of being irrelevant. Like dude you're a former seal, go enter and win a shooting competition... nobody's stopping you from collecting from a talent that you used.
It is a grand idea tho
Yes, Yes, Yes!!! You must engage in Effortful Thinking and take control of your mental and physical systems!!!
I Love These Men and have the greatest respect for their devotion to duty! Wonderful examples for young people!!!
“Have you ever even used an Apple?” - Jocko trying to bring our man Echo down 😂
😂😂 when echo says. What are you doing
Setting a clock is one of the things that kernels actually do to pull up out of control processes. It's called a "watchdog timer". If you don't check in with that watchdog the kernel can say "you're fucked up" and tear down the process to stop it from affecting everything.
"Kernels? Is that something to do with kernels?" 🤣 Nice dude.
A reset on a PC refreshes your memory which matters less when you have 32gb or more but most people have 4-16GB. For a lot of people they will reset when updating drivers so they’ll feel like they never reset when they actually reset a lot.
As for stretching, I've been learning that it's more important _after_ the workout, because we tighten up, and that's when we do damage.
Stretch before a workout or exercise and a light cool down after whatever you do is what your supposed to do
Add in restoration yoga for max recovery.
Jocko and Echo you guys rock
'control + R ' on Linux terminal is gonna blow Jocko's mind.
A cmd is gonna blow his mind.
That clock thing is called time-blocking. Great concept
- how much can i fix in the house in 45 minutes - im only going to sit in the office for 90 minutes - how many quotes can i get through? . Ive 10 minutes to get as much firewood stacked as i can. etc etc.
Dude that was funny when he laughed at him for holding that pen😂
Usually, by the time I hit the reset button I probably could have hit it sooner. Every now and again it's important to take a step back and evaluate.
So make sure the programs aren’t creating issue with the system so to speak, then a restart will likely never be needed.
imagine the editor listening to them trying to talk about how computers work
Jocko's voice is ASMR for me. Awesome.
I get the over all theme. 100% agree. Also, I don’t remember ever shutting down or restarting my MacBook Pro (M1) in years. That thing still operates at 100%
Damn we're bringing back the windows vs mac convo from the early 2000s! Hell yeah! I had the imac g3 baby in purple 😂😂😂😂
imagine being Echo and just getting yelled at to wake up almost everyday of his life by Jocko
Sounds like echo’s vacation reset is more like a computer setup, do a little bit, restart, do a little, restart, etc. 🏝️ 😂
so glad this video got recommended to me today, i was having issues with brain lock
Similar to Windows' Ctrl+Alt+Delete Task Manager, the Command+Option+Esc shortcut opens the Force Quit box,
Great talk gentlemen. Would love to see a 5min Jocko stretch routine.
Nate
@5:00 This is commonly called tripping, caught in a loop basically spinning out the tires but not going anywhere
This came to me at the perfect time. Thanks gentlemen
My reset is annual. At least a week long back country hunt in Alaska, no phones or tech.
Man as an 18 year old kid, Jocko’s analogies are hard to wrap my head around. Also Echo’s movie analogies require research (but I discovered some good movies at least). I think these guys may be getting old but the way they go on a tangent to explain is definitely entertaining lol.
Old? They could be my kids.
Amen
@@kennethcurtis1856 well yeah from an 18yr olds perspective these guys are old
This kind of comment makes me lose whatever hope I still had left in humankind
You're just young
The clock thing is amazing I find myself in my basement stretching and meditating 2 hours later never worked out at all
A clear sign of needing a reset is saving this to your watch later
Oof felt this
Jocko leading a meditation retreat:
“Alright you have 10 minutes to meditate. Go!”
I thought this would be helpful. I didn't think this would be about literally resetting a computer
Hey Jacko, long time fan and 59 years old jits addict . This can’t be a coincidence… all day feeling crappy with so much to do as xmass is in two days . Decided to do what always works GYM . On my drive to the gym somehow this episode gets cued in … Frickish
Wow. It's been so long since I have watched Jocko that now he's in color.
For some reason I was surprised to see you here. I shouldn’t be though. I’ve watched some of your content.
I just have to create a playlist real quick... *A few moments later* Day is over and I've gone from two playlists to reinstalling my operating system. Also, the two playlists I used to have are gone.
To be fair, I need a great playlist to get anything done, so this outcome isn't a surprise.
Great Job! Non-Repair!
Been a min since I listened/ watched a Jocko/Echo vid...Echo looks like he ate the camera man! That dude is swoll compared to older vids
How Human Nature Works
Human nature is the desire to receive, also called “desire to enjoy,” and it functions by receiving what is beneficial to itself and rejecting what is harmful.
As someone who has worked in IT, I've always said to people, "Computers are just like the brain, they sometimes the get confused".
The clock thing he mentioned. Setting timers for everything. I used to have issues being late. Even if it’s just 1 or 2 minutes , but since I’ve been setting timers, I haven’t been late since
what do you use to time the activities? like if you are out and about or just home at the pc?
@@ahumanbeing6875 my phone
Haha. I never thought about that until you said that. I don’t use control, alt, delete anymore. Never!!
Jocko off that thc gummy. Love you Jocko
Hearing Echo's voice and then seeing him, always throws me.
My #1 hard reset is to clean. Organize. Wash my car, detail it. The environment around me is super clean, allows me to refocus, then take action.
Jocko with cup of coffee in the morning is best for me.
Echo’s orating and vocab is next level from the early episodes. Still love the pidgin accent but his conversation game has improved exponentially. 💪💪💪💪 nice work big fella
"Sleep on it"
Phrase exists in every culture for a reason. If you have a problem let a night of your brain reconfiguring and refreshing itself help solve it.
Many enterpruers solve problems in their dreams.
NICE WORK!!! Jocko keeping us honest and in knowledge =P
Great advice! I need a reset right now!
THE OSI model = 7 different layers.(its a good diagram to visualise whats going on)
Dude I did not understand what you wrote in that comment your sentece structs confuse me 😂
@@TsoiIzAlive I have revised my comment to make it more understandable, hopefully. 😀
11:30....i've been having the strongest urge to go climb up a mountain. like i need a physical higher perspective to re-set my perspective in life
I agree with this one hundred percent but I will add something that I do in my personal life because it's actually based on the same idea of a computer reset.
Underground Jocko tough dude 😎
Great analogies here and a lot of great mind inducing, thought processing done here with these two SEALS/gentlemen. Some big things to take in mind here
Definitely very mind inducing.
For a good analogy of why turning your electronics off and on again works in case you're wondering:
You know your way from your home to the shop, but you accidentally take a wrong turn and continue to try to correct it but now you're lost and have no idea how to get to the shop, or how to get home.
My son watches you and he just bought some of your pro Tien shake stuff that you promote got the vanilla it’s pretty good. I just wanted to tell you that you got a good product and God bless

Regarding intermittent fasting, does the fast have to be a contiguous 8 hours? Can I eat breakfast, skip lunch, have an afternoon snack, and hours later have dinner?
This video made me get up and do the laundry thanks
