That's an IFF antenna, meant for equipment to identify whether the target is friend or foe. That only works if friendly aircraft are equipped with the proper transponder, which is probably not the case given that the friendly aircraft in Ukraine are also former Soviet types.
It's done in generally the same action. You remove it to prevent damage to the electronics. But during training in the US you're not exactly gtfo after shooting. Just remember to remove the BCU after getting to cover.

There are two expendable resources which the missile needs to track targets, even if it is not actually fired. One is electrical power (hence battery) and the other is compressed argon, which is used to cool the IR detector inside the missile to make it more sensitive. Argon (and many gasses) gets cold when you allow it to escape from a high pressure container through a small hole. This is because there is some attractive force between the atoms and as they accelerate out through the hole the force between atoms tends to slow down the random component of their motion (while the coordinated linear movement is increased). It's called the Joule-Thomson effect. The Battery/Cooling Unit contains both the battery and the compressed argon. It is not put inside the missile because often when you go to use the missile, you end up not firing it and it would be wasted if the battery and coolant couldn't be easily replaced.
