    Please release the entire conversation with Geoff on this. I could watch him go frame by frame on these movies. I learn more about cinematography l, specifically lighting, from the videos than damn near anything else. This video is simply brilliant.

    A pet peeve of mine is James Cameron and his directors cuts.
    In short, since the debacle that was Piranha 2, James has had final cut on all his films, and repeatedly in interviews say that the theatrical cuts of his films are his directors cuts... The longer versions are Special Editions, released for the fans..
    Just because it is longer, doesn't mea it's prefered by the director... :)

    I really enjoyed this format. Must have been annoying to edit but I loved hearing him gush about cinematography.

    After watching this, I want to get my hands on the original version of Apocalypse Now. Just seeing the few shots of it here, and listening to Geoff Boyle's reviews of the shots really conveys the value of good cinematography and framing choices.

      I'm guessing they got copyright flagged because of the soundtrack, so they trimmed it for that reason.

    What does hitting the marks actually mean as an actor?

      Mark Ant actor’s blocking, where each actor should stand relative to the camera,. If they’re walking in the frame, it would be walking from point a to be etc.

    Jesus. Light and DOF - it's just a tools to communicate with an audience. If you're using DOF, it doesn't mean that you *"don't know your craft"*

    • @jmalmsten
      @jmalmsten 5 лет назад +2

      Use the DoF that suits the story. You can have almost no DoF and have to struggle to get single eyelash in focus or go full on deep massive DoF like in Citizen Kane... The simple point is that if you think one or the other should be the "cinematic" choice... You need to rethink your career.

      To be fair, it is considerably more difficult to lead the audience's eye when the depth of field is deep. That takes skill and years to master as opposed to blurring out the image.
