@@logicaldude3611 That is correct. We had no trilogies until that point in time, thanks to George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, who changed all that!

@@PhilMoskowitz Reviews were quite middling at the time. The public didn't really fully embrace Emprie as "the best" until after Return of the Jedi. People were kind of down on the cliffhanger ending when it first came out.

@ryuhayabusa6776 Exactly. We have the luxury of knowing what happens in the next movie. Empire was a bit of a cliff hanger and leaves you wanting more as a bit of tease. I can understand her reaction at the time

Most people everywhere would later on grow to love it as well! It’s just something that have never seen before of the good guys losing and being lift with a cliff hanger with many questions of what’s to happen next so they didn’t know how to feel at all back then as they’ve never seen a movie do that before. Later on more people started to love the empire strikes back’s genius ending from how phenomenal it really is!

I saw ESB as a kid in 1982. I was confused with the ending, because everybody was going like "now let's get Han back !" and then THE END.
What? No final battle to get Han back? No proper victorious ending? Cliffhanger was pretty new in movies, hence the audience reaction IMHO.
