What I love, love, love about music is that I am old, have listened to all sorts of music, have some pretty eclectic all time faves, but until this video I had never heard of Love Junk by The Pursuit of Happiness. Thanks, guys, for introducing me to this band. I'm now going to go away and feverishly find and listen to their discography! Fyi, Green is my hands down number 1 for 1988.

I agonized over Prefab Sprout. Finally decided it's not quite as good as its predecessor (Steve McQueen) and its followup (Jordan: The Comeback, their best imho).

If this was based on what I was listening to on '88, it would have been between R.E.M and Mike Scott (Waterboys), but what I discovered a few years later changed it all... 1 - Game Theory - Two Steps from the Middle Ages (yes... again 😎😎) 2 - The Bible - Eureka 3 - The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues 4 - R.E.M. - Green 5 - Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians - Globe of Frogs HM's - The Feelies - Only Life - The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God - Morrissey - Viva Hate - Crowded House - Temple of Low Men
Iron Maiden's "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son" was a heavy metal masterpiece imo. The musicianship was superb and the band scored four Top 10 UK singles.

Great list Joe! Glad to see 7th Son make the #1 spot. I would have had Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shcoking on my list. I've never heard The Pursuit of Happiness record, so will have to check that out.
Nice job as always! I like the fact that all lists were so different. Being from Canada, I was surprised you guys knew TPOH! I love all the albums below. I'm not saying I like them. I love them. I listen often to them and I consider them an important part of my life...and there are 20 albums!! I'm aware of the subjective nature of the music listening experience and the fact that because of my age, I was 16 in 1988, this is a period of time personally important for me. I was creating my own identity and these albums were playing a relevant role in this respect. But still. I doubt there are many years where I can find so many records that I really love. So, when I hear people saying that the music of the 80s was generally garbage, I have to strongly disagree. Yes, I also hate that awful mainstream 80s production... But that's far from defining the whole decade. Listen to these and tell me if I'm wrong. First class material! 1. Surfer Rosa. Pixies. 2. I'm Your Man. Leonard Cohen. 3. Green. R. E. M. 4. If I Should Fall from Grace with God. The Pogues. 5. 16 Lovers Lane. The Go-Betweens. 6. Tender Prey. Nick Cave. 7. Workers Playtime. Billy Bragg. 8. Daydream Nation. Sonic Youth. 9. Bug. Eddie Brickell & The New Bohemians. 6. House Tornado. Throwing Muses.
Hi Fran. I'm posting my '88 list late this time. Check it out if you get a chance. You have another outstanding list. I'm a Pixies fan, but don't really like their first LP that much. (Doolittle was my #2 album for '89). We both have Cohen, REM, and Pogues ranked up there. 80's music is/was fantastic. Late 80's/ early 90's an important era for me - bought many albums.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Also a huge Pixies, REM, Cohen and Pogues fans. All among my favorite artists of all time. I invite you to check a Top Ten Pogues Songs list I proposed to review to another RUclips channel: Reactions to the Classics, I'm sure you will enjoy it...and coming up this month a Top Ten Pixies list. Take care

Good pick of Lucinda Williams and k.d. lang. I have that THOP album but haven't listened to it in ages. After your placement of the album, I will have to revisit it. My picks: 1. If I Should Fall From Grace With God-The Pogues 2. Slow Turning-John Hiatt 3. Fisherman's Blues-The Waterboys 4. k.d. lang-Shadowland 5. Land of Dreams-Randy Newman 6. Irish Heartbeat-Van Morrison & The Chieftans 7. 16 Lovers Lane-The Go-Betweens 8. Lucinda Williams-Lucinda Williams 9. Green-R.E.M. 10. The Mona Lisa's Sister-Graham Parker
Thumbs up for remembering Graham Parker. 1. Morrissey - Viva Hate - Good as any Smith's record (most of their records were uneven but greatest hits I and II are great) and the best by Morrissey 2. Graham Parker - Mona Lisa Sister - Graham has been so ignored in the US and this was not that good a record but it had ruclips.net/video/OJEvJ8F8FMM/видео.html - I'm Just Your Man and Get Started , Start a fire ruclips.net/video/OJEvJ8F8FMM/видео.html and a couple of pretty good ones. 3.The Church - Starfish 4. REM - Green 5. Sonic Youth 6. Dinosaur Jr. Bug (showing signs of the great band they would become) 7. Neil Young - this Notes for you 8. U2 - Rattle and Hum (I usually dislike the band and this is kind of a greatest hits and I decided to be "charitable") Considered Alice in Chains (not enough got songs), Leonard Cohen - decent album from a guy who I usually turn off, Tracy Chapman - 2 good songs. Nick Cave who i have never heard anything good by is sort of the PJ Harvey of men but with a few goods songs like PJ has done.
@@oppothumbs1 Mona Lisa's Sister did not get the greatest reviews but I think it has a lot of great songs. It was the album that I got my brother into Graham Parker. You are one of the few that have This Notes For You at a positive placement. I like some of the songs but I know it was not well received.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 The Feelies are great, from Hoboken NJ. Big influence on REM and Yo La Tengo. Only Life is my 4th favorite Feelies album. If you like it,try Crazy Rhythms,The Good Earth(my favorite) and Time for a Witness
I watched lots of your artist album listographies before watching these and I was hoping for the same eclecticism here but you're all pretty much into Rock! That doesn't take away from how knowledgable you are across all genres, it actually makes it more impressive. Keep up the good work, I love it
"Hairshirt" is such a great song thanks especially to Stipe's amazing vocal..."I am not the type of dog that could keep you waiting/ For no good reason...."
Totally agree! That one never gets mentioned, but it's my favourite on Green. As you say, great vocals and great lyrics and a lovely feel to the song overall...

Boyz. I’m am very much looking forward to discovering Pursuit of Happiness. #1 will need to be The Eight Legged Groove Machine by The Wonder Stuff (don’t know if they even registered across the pond) and in no particular order House of Love - House of Love (that and the stuffies on constant repeat in all good indie discos) Rem - Green (agree my favourite by them - Hairshirt as I was being a miserable bastard or was it the girl I was dating... NWA - Straight out of Compton cause it’s such an important record So I guess that leave Poh.... It’s a been a week boyz and the ping announcing this video made me smile ...... thank you boyz Immediate takeaway Poh and The stuffies are cut from the same cloth.... would have slotted right into my record collection... and will now
Saw the waterboys in NYC at the Beacon theatre doing their Fisherman’s blues tour in October of 89 great show the same night as the big earthquake in San Francisco
Completely agree with your comments about Mills and Stipe. Also thanks for introducing me to Orange Juice. I was familiar with Edwyn Collins but knew nothing of OJ. I will revisit TPOH as well, Thanks!
The Fall/ I am Curious Oranj Camper Van Beethoven / Our beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart Peter Murphy/ Love Hysteria I'm your Man/ Lenard Cohen Cocteau Twins/ Blue Bell Knoll Billy Bragg/Workers Playtime
My favorite albums of 1988 are: 1. The Wild Swans - “Bringing Home the Ashes” 2. Cocteau Twins - "Blue Bell Knoll" 3. R.E.M. - "Green" 4. The Go-Betweens - "16 Lovers Lane" 5. Morrissey - "Viva Hate" Honorable mention: Book of Love - "Lullaby"
Green was an incredible listening experience. It was my first REM album. I'd never heard anything like it before. It just hit me on a whole other level. It made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. No other album has ever had the same effect. When REM are good there's no-one better. I bought the cassette tape and I used to carry it round with me like a lucky charm. Happy days. No one mentioned 'Spirit of Eden' by TalkTalk. It's a fantastic album as well. Anyone listened to it?
Mike and The Mechanics "Living Years" featuring the classic single The Living Years and rockier numbers like Seeing Is Believing and Blame. Paul Carrack and Paul Young (the other one) sharing vocal duties.
Hard year. It was the year of greatest hits albums at least here in England. 1.Rem green 2. Prince lovesexy 3. U2 rattle and hum 4. Talking heads naked 5. Travelling wilburys volume one. Never heard of TPOH will give it a listen Beach boys album reviews next 😉
Really tough year for choosing the order! 20) Two Nuns and a Pack Mule - Rapeman 19) Viva Hate - Morrissey 18) Life's Too Good - The Sugarcubes 17) Starfish - The Church 16) The Trinity Sessions - Cowboy Junkies 15) Tender Prey - Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds 14) Hairway to Steven - Butthole Surfers 13) South of Heaven - Slayer 12) Now & Zen - Robert Plant 11) Green - R.E.M. 10) Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman 09) Vivid - Living Colour 08) Blue Bell Knoll - Cocteau Twins 07) Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars - Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians 06) Rattle and Hum - U2 05) Naked - Talking Heads 04) Nothing's Shocking - Jane's Addiction 03) Peepshow - Siouxsie & the Banshees 02) Isn't Anything - My Bloody Valentine 01) Surfer Rosa - The Pixies honorable mention: Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk (really just getting into the band and not ready to rank this album) I really wanted to choose Isn't Anything for number 1 but two songs I dislike held it back. I actually created my own version of Rattle and Hum by collecting the studio tracks and adding a few B-sides from the era that had that similar American sound and style. I think it would have been a great album had they released a normal studio album instead of this sprawling mess. I suspect they were intimidated by the prospect of topping the Joshua Tree. Here's the album I came up with: Desire When Love Comes to Town Silver & Gold (studio version of course) Heartland Love Rescue Me Hawkmoon 269 Angel of Harlem Hallelujah, Here She Comes Van Dieman's Land God Pt. II A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel All I Want is You
Green just barely missed my top 10, too. I find a couple-three of the songs too "bubble gummy" and the other songs aren't quite great enough to completely make up for it. I totally agree with you on U2's Rattle & Hum. Had it been a single album containing only the new studio tracks it would've made my top 10 for the year.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I know what you mean about Green but I love those songs anyway and I think most of it is good to great (except "The Wrong Child" although I appreciate that one more now that I understand a bit more what it's about). I didn't want to put it so low but that's just how it worked out. .

Well, before watching this video my top 5 were: 5) Traveling Wilburys - Vol. 1 4) Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll 3) Enya - Watermark 2) Pixies - Surfer Rosa 1) N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton However, based on your recommendation I've just purchased Love Junk, and have a feeling it will squeak itself onto my list!
Checked out Love Junk. It's pretty good. Catchy songs, crunchy power chords and effective background female vocals. Kinda mainstream, kinda quirky too. I like it.
Living Colour are very unlucky not to get in my top 5 because I love Vivid. Saw them live two years ago and they played the whole album. Other honourable mentions are: Steve Earle - Copperhead Road Morrisey - Viva Hate Prefab Sprout - From Langley Park To Memphis The Jeff Healey Band - See The Light All About Eve - All About Eve Fairground Attraction - The First Of A Million Kisses Soul Asylum - Hang Time Robert Palmer - Heavy Nova Talk Talk - Spirit Of Eden Screaming Trees - Invisible Lantern The Dogs D'Amour - In The Dynamite Jet Saloon My top 5 albums for 1988 are: 5. BOC - Imaginos(I know what you are thinking....) 4. Green River - Rehab Doll 3. Dinosaur Jr. - Bug 2. Soundgarden - Ultramega Ok 1. Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man(One of my top 20 albums of all time)
We've got some matches again. The Leonard Cohen album was a contender until I realised how much more I enjoyed the versions of the songs on the Live In London album. That's very much my go-to-album for Cohen.
@@paulsimister944 We should've had three more in common because: Surfer Rosa, Green and Fisherman's Blues would've been honourable mentions for me too. I am not a big fan of recorded live albums, I much prefer to see the artist live myself. Leonard Cohen is one that I regret not seeing in person. My daughter has managed to see him though at some festival in the UK a few years ago(I think it was Glastonbury)
Some very good albums in 1988 but only one has crossed over to excellent. Fisherman's Blues - The Waterboys 9 Big music transitions into fiddle driven folk rock but it's still driven by Mike Scott's passionate songwriting and singing. The Mona Lisa's Sister - Graham Parker 8.5 A more straightforward production and strong songwriting creates the best Parker album for a while. From Langley Park To Memphis - Prefab Sprout 8.5 A fine follow-up to Steve McQueen packed with quality tunes. It includes their one UK top 20 single. I'm baffled why their catchy tunes weren't more successful. Starfish - The Church 8 Another very good album from fhis Australian psychedelic rock band. This album was their most successful in terms of sales. Copperhead Road - Steve Earle 8 Earle steps towards the Americana, heartland rock territory of singers like John Mellencamp but he hasn't lost all his country influences. The First Of A Million Kisses - Fairground Attraction 8 A charming album of folk pop, most famous for the UK #1 single Perfect. Surfer Rosa - Pixies 8 I find it hard to appreciate noisy alternative rock but the Pixies are an exception. This album has the noise and power but is also packed with melodies. I probably should have mentioned the EP, Come On Pilgrims in 1987 but it's often packaged with this album. Green - R.E.M. 8 The first R.E.M. album I bought and still one of my top 3 or 4 favourites by the band. The vocals are clear, the tunes strong and we're starting to see the acoustic songs that will lead them to great success over the next few years. Zilch - Shack 8 The demise of The Smiths left a vacancy as the best UK indie rock band. Shack could have grabbed the title if they'd built up momentum rather than leaving long gaps between albums. Even better albums are to come from Michael Head and his band. Gladstone, Humour & Blue - Martin Stephenson 8 A very good second album by this British folk/pop/rock singer songwriter but I recommend you start with the debut, Boat To Bolivia Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk 8 Tranquil, moody, atmospheric and haunting with much more focus on textures than tunes. Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 - Traveling Wilburys 8 I'm cautious of "supergroups" but this album works very nicely. A good time was had by the players and by me listening. I hope I didn't miss anything out because I moved onto 1989 a few days early.

1. Pixies - Surfer Rosa (by a landsliiiiide, nothing even comes close for me) 2. My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything (gets overshadowed by their masterpiece Loveless but it's a really good album in it's own right) 3. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (not a big sonic youth fan overall but its a really cool album) 4. The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane (really awesome sweet pop album) 5. Dinosaur Jr. - Bug (i think it's a big step down from You're Living All Over Me which is my aoty for 1987 but it's still Dino Jr. doing what they do really well)
When I re-listened to that Dinosaur Jr album I was enjoying it a good bit and was thinking it had a chance to make my top 10... until I got to the last track. I don't know what they were going for there but, holy cow, that "song" almost ruined the album for me.
@@pova-lr6nx 'Thrill' is not the word I would use. "Don't" triggered my fight-or-flight response. Heh-heh. In the future, I'll just end the album after track 8.
Already loved your channel, but now recognizing TPOH all around blew me away. Love these "best album" segments. TPOH is one of my all time favorites, but LOVE JUNK is the absolute best they did. Looking forward to see if Spilt Milk by Jellyfish, another fantastic but overlooked album in my opinion, makes a later cut. Thanks for the feedback too.

Of course, the problem with that Metallica album is the lack of bass. There's a version of the album on youtube called "And Justice for Jason" with bass and it kicks ass.
The "Rain Man" soundtrack was a brilliant mix of artists, like Ian Gillan & Roger Glover's Lonely Avenue and Bananaramas's (popular 80's girl band) Nathan Jones. Hans Zimmer's theme music was really atmospheric.
Agree with you guys on 1988. Not a spectacular year, and I'm with Joe here, leaning towards metal. After all, the best thing about the 1980s was metal \m/ IMHO. Thanks all for mentioning TPOH. Completely new to me, but I sure will be checking it out! I think I only found one 5-star album from 1988 in my collection, so my favorite of the year was quite easy. And to be honest, not sure I could give any of the rest higher than 3 1/2 stars... :( 1. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. As Joe said, their last great album, and arguably their magnum opus. 2. David Lee Roth - Skyscraper. Steve Vai and David Lee Roth were a fun combo. I just like the fun and happy vibe that this album gives me. Perfect for a roofless drive on a summer's day. 3. Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden. Yet another interesting progressive pop effort from my favorite 80s band alongside a-ha and Prefab Sprout. 4. Prefab Sprout - From Langley Park To Memphis. Pure pop sensation! 5. A-ha - Stay On These Roads. An uneven effort from the Norwegian synth pop group, but the deep cuts are great - the singles suck! This Alone Is Love, Hurry Home, There's Never A Forever Thing, Out Of Blue Comes Green and even The Blood That Moves The Body are all stunning pop tunes. And honorable mentions goes to: Yngwie Malmsteen - Odyssey The Traveling Wilburys Megadeth - So Far So Good... Metallica - ...And Justice For All (Would have been in my Top 5 if it wasn't for the horrendous production) Queensrÿche - Operation Mind Crime W.A.S.P. - The Headless Children David Foster - The Symphony Sessions Testament - The New Order Toto - The Seventh One Sandra - Into A Secret Land Slayer - South of Heaven
1988: (Year Average 8.4) 1. Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman (9) 2. And Justice For All - Metallica (8.5) 3. Beelzebubba - The Dead Milkmen (8.5) 4. Spirit Of Eden - Talk Talk (8) 5. Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 - The Traveling Wilburys (8)
I have not heard Love Junk for many years. I did have two singles on vinyl from this album, I’m An Adult Now and She’s So Young. I’ll have to go back and have another listen. I do remember reading an interview with TPOH and was interested to read that they described the album as a mixture between AC/DC and ABBA.
1988 was the year pop or chart music fell off a cliff. It’s never really recovered on both sides of the pond. You could find some good alternative stuff, and some of that alternative stuff would break into the charts (mainly the album charts), but the days of finding pop gems in the top 40 were over
I respectfully disagree. Especially in the UK, plenty of cool stuff was still to be found on the charts. The Pogues were having hits. Neneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance, one of my all-time faves, is right around the corner. KLF had an amazing run. Madonna was peaking. Prince was still happening. Soul II Soul, The Beautiful South, Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night singles...I could go on. Mind you, there was a LOT of crap...
My Top 5: 1. IRON MAIDEN - Seventh Son 2. A-HA - Stay On These Roads 3. TRAVELING WILBURYS - Traveling Wilburys 4. R.E.M. - Green 5. ENYA - Watermark Greetings from Canary Islands
I’ve been REALLY looking forward to this one 😊 Here are my picks... 1 - The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane 2 - Jane’s Addiction - Nothing’s Shocking 3 - The Sugarcubes - Life’s Too Good 4 - Pixies - Surfer Rosa 5 - Dinosaur Jr - Bug

Interesting... the first year R.E.M. makes two lists is a year they might miss out on my top 10 and they definitely miss my top 5. I think I strongly prefer them in “pretentious” mode to “lightweight pop song” mode, but Green is still a solid album. I think it’s basically between 7 contenders as to who would make my top 5 and I’d have to relisten to them again. I’m thinking right now Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime and Jane’s Addiction - Nothing’s Shocking lead slightly, but the others are close behind (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Tender Prey, The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane, Metallica - ...And Justice For All, My Bloody Valentine - Isn’t Anything, They Might Be Giants - Lincoln). I’ll have to listen to Love Junk at some point since you all had it on your lists.

damn.... I forgot The Posies - 'Failure'... that knocks out Robyn Hitchcock of the top 5, based simply on the number of cd spins at home and tape (prersonal copy) playing on the auto tape deck.
Gerry Rafferty's "North and South" was another great record from the year. It only made the UK Top 50 but had a wonderful, laid back celtic feel to the tracks. Like the Proclaimers, Rafferty always had great musicians.on his albums.
Synth pop duo Erasure's "The Innocents" was a classic imo. Think Chains of Love was a hit in the U.S. They were massive in the UK and Europe back in the 80's.

Glaring omission from everyone. Unquestionably, for me, THE album of this year was Talk Talk's 'Spirit Of Eden'.
I like Talk Talk, but this one is a littttttle dense and out there for my taste. - Joe
Spirit of Eden is good but it's a "for the initiated" type of album with lots of weird atmospherics. Not everybody's gonna be into it.
@@TastesLikeMusic One person's dense and out there is another person's spare and beautiful.
Totally agree. Genius!
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Not everyone has to be into it for it to nevertheless be artistically the greatest work released that year.
5. Everything's Different Now-'Til Tuesday
4. The Trinity Sessions-The Cowboy Junkies
3. Lincoln-They Might Be Giants
2. Temple of Low Men-Crowded House
1. Green-R.E.M.

10. The Mona Lisa's Sister-Graham Parker
Thumbs up for remembering Graham Parker.
1. Morrissey - Viva Hate - Good as any Smith's record (most of their records were uneven but greatest hits I and II are great) and the best by Morrissey
3.The Church - Starfish
4. REM - Green
5. Sonic Youth
6. Dinosaur Jr. Bug (showing signs of the great band they would become)
7. Neil Young - this Notes for you
8. U2 - Rattle and Hum (I usually dislike the band and this is kind of a greatest hits and I decided to be "charitable")
Considered Alice in Chains (not enough got songs), Leonard Cohen - decent album from a guy who I usually turn off, Tracy Chapman - 2 good songs.

Pere Ubu, so weird and creative
I like that Feelies album. I never heard it before. It's got a bit of a Lou Reed vibe going on.
I ranked it my number 1 REM song on this very channel.

and in no particular order House of Love - House of Love (that and the stuffies on constant repeat in all good indie discos)
Rem - Green (agree my favourite by them - Hairshirt as I was being a miserable bastard or was it the girl I was dating...
NWA - Straight out of Compton cause it’s such an important record
So I guess that leave Poh....
It’s a been a week boyz and the ping announcing this video made me smile ...... thank you boyz
Immediate takeaway Poh and The stuffies are cut from the same cloth.... would have slotted right into my record collection... and will now
Saw the waterboys in NYC at the Beacon theatre doing their Fisherman’s blues tour in October of 89 great show the same night as the big earthquake in San Francisco
Completely agree with your comments about Mills and Stipe. Also thanks for introducing me to Orange Juice. I was familiar with Edwyn Collins but knew nothing of OJ. I will revisit TPOH as well, Thanks!
Just picked up an old copy of TPOH "Love Junk" on vinyl for four bucks at Record Connection in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Thanks, listography 😉👍
The Fall/ I am Curious Oranj
Camper Van Beethoven / Our beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart
Peter Murphy/ Love Hysteria
I'm your Man/ Lenard Cohen
Cocteau Twins/ Blue Bell Knoll
Billy Bragg/Workers Playtime
My favorite albums of 1988 are:
1. The Wild Swans - “Bringing Home the Ashes”
2. Cocteau Twins - "Blue Bell Knoll"
3. R.E.M. - "Green"
4. The Go-Betweens - "16 Lovers Lane"
5. Morrissey - "Viva Hate"
Honorable mention:
Book of Love - "Lullaby"
Green was an incredible listening experience. It was my first REM album. I'd never heard anything like it before. It just hit me on a whole other level. It made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. No other album has ever had the same effect. When REM are good there's no-one better. I bought the cassette tape and I used to carry it round with me like a lucky charm. Happy days.
No one mentioned 'Spirit of Eden' by TalkTalk. It's a fantastic album as well. Anyone listened to it?
Primo album DEI REM anche per me in cassetta😊 and I love Spirit of eden
Safe to say that every album ever released is represented someplace in the postings below even the Spacemen 3.
1.Rem green
2. Prince lovesexy
3. U2 rattle and hum
4. Talking heads naked
5. Travelling wilburys volume one.
Never heard of TPOH
will give it a listen
Beach boys album reviews next 😉
Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk every day of the week. Forever
Really tough year for choosing the order!
20) Two Nuns and a Pack Mule - Rapeman
19) Viva Hate - Morrissey
18) Life's Too Good - The Sugarcubes
17) Starfish - The Church
16) The Trinity Sessions - Cowboy Junkies

02) Isn't Anything - My Bloody Valentine
01) Surfer Rosa - The Pixies
honorable mention: Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk (really just getting into the band and not ready to rank this album)
I really wanted to choose Isn't Anything for number 1 but two songs I dislike held it back.
Here's the album I came up with:
Desire
When Love Comes to Town
Silver & Gold (studio version of course)
Heartland
Love Rescue Me
Hawkmoon 269
Angel of Harlem
Hallelujah, Here She Comes
Van Dieman's Land
God Pt. II
A Room at the Heartbreak Hotel
All I Want is You
Green just barely missed my top 10, too.
I didn't want to put it so low but that's just how it worked out. .
Obviously I love Naked way more than the typical Talking Heads fan. I'm crazy about that album.
@@179rich Naked is one of those albums that I think is about half great and the other half is forgettable.

2. Straight Outta Compton, N.W.A.
3. Rattle and Hum, U2
5. Voice Of The Beehive - Let It Bee
4. Morrissey - Viva Hate
3. A-Ha - Stay On These Roads
2. The Lilac Time - The Lilac Time
1. Prefab Sprout - From Langley Park To Memphis
Well, before watching this video my top 5 were:
5) Traveling Wilburys - Vol. 1
4) Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll
3) Enya - Watermark
2) Pixies - Surfer Rosa
1) N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
However, based on your recommendation I've just purchased Love Junk, and have a feeling it will squeak itself onto my list!
Checked out Love Junk. It's pretty good. Catchy songs, crunchy power chords and effective background female vocals. Kinda mainstream, kinda quirky too. I like it.
It's very good. Listening to all these quality albums people listed makes me realize 1988 was a pretty deep year.
Living Colour are very unlucky not to get in my top 5 because I love Vivid. Saw them live two years ago and they played the whole album. Other honourable mentions are:
Steve Earle - Copperhead Road
Morrisey - Viva Hate
Prefab Sprout - From Langley Park To Memphis
The Jeff Healey Band - See The Light
All About Eve - All About Eve
Fairground Attraction - The First Of A Million Kisses
Soul Asylum - Hang Time
Robert Palmer - Heavy Nova
Talk Talk - Spirit Of Eden
Screaming Trees - Invisible Lantern
The Dogs D'Amour - In The Dynamite Jet Saloon
My top 5 albums for 1988 are:
5. BOC - Imaginos(I know what you are thinking....)
4. Green River - Rehab Doll
3. Dinosaur Jr. - Bug
2. Soundgarden - Ultramega Ok
Fisherman's Blues - The Waterboys 9
Big music transitions into fiddle driven folk rock but it's still driven by Mike Scott's passionate songwriting and singing.
The Mona Lisa's Sister - Graham Parker 8.5
A more straightforward production and strong songwriting creates the best Parker album for a while.
From Langley Park To Memphis - Prefab Sprout 8.5
A fine follow-up to Steve McQueen packed with quality tunes. It includes their one UK top 20 single. I'm baffled why their catchy tunes weren't more successful.
Starfish - The Church 8
Another very good album from fhis Australian psychedelic rock band. This album was their most successful in terms of sales.
Copperhead Road - Steve Earle 8
Earle steps towards the Americana, heartland rock territory of singers like John Mellencamp but he hasn't lost all his country influences.
The First Of A Million Kisses - Fairground Attraction 8
A charming album of folk pop, most famous for the UK #1 single Perfect.
Surfer Rosa - Pixies 8
I find it hard to appreciate noisy alternative rock but the Pixies are an exception. This album has the noise and power but is also packed with melodies. I probably should have mentioned the EP, Come On Pilgrims in 1987 but it's often packaged with this album.
Green - R.E.M. 8
The first R.E.M. album I bought and still one of my top 3 or 4 favourites by the band. The vocals are clear, the tunes strong and we're starting to see the acoustic songs that will lead them to great success over the next few years.
Zilch - Shack 8
The demise of The Smiths left a vacancy as the best UK indie rock band. Shack could have grabbed the title if they'd built up momentum rather than leaving long gaps between albums. Even better albums are to come from Michael Head and his band.
Gladstone, Humour & Blue - Martin Stephenson 8
A very good second album by this British folk/pop/rock singer songwriter but I recommend you start with the debut, Boat To Bolivia
Spirit of Eden - Talk Talk 8
Tranquil, moody, atmospheric and haunting with much more focus on textures than tunes.
Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 - Traveling Wilburys 8
I'm cautious of "supergroups" but this album works very nicely. A good time was had by the players and by me listening.
I hope I didn't miss anything out because I moved onto 1989 a few days early.
First great year in awhile!
1. It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back - Public Enemy
2. Surfer Rosa - Pixies
3. Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth
4. Spirit Of Eden - Talk Talk
5. I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen
(Honourable Mentions: Frank Zappa - Broadway the Hard Way)
1. Metallica - …and Justice for All
2. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Peepshow
3. The Church - Starfish
4. Talking Heads - Naked
5. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
5. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
4. Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll
3. Rudimentary Peni - Cacophony
2. Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
1. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
1. Pixies - Surfer Rosa (by a landsliiiiide, nothing even comes close for me)
2. My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything (gets overshadowed by their masterpiece Loveless but it's a really good album in it's own right)
3. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (not a big sonic youth fan overall but its a really cool album)
4. The Go-Betweens - 16 Lovers Lane (really awesome sweet pop album)
5. Dinosaur Jr. - Bug (i think it's a big step down from You're Living All Over Me which is my aoty for 1987 but it's still Dino Jr. doing what they do really well)
Good shout for mbv. It's not loveless, but worth mentioning
When I re-listened to that Dinosaur Jr album I was enjoying it a good bit and was thinking it had a chance to make my top 10... until I got to the last track. I don't know what they were going for there but, holy cow, that "song" almost ruined the album for me.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 ah yeah, Don't... Not a song I love but it's a thrill, no?
@@pova-lr6nx 'Thrill' is not the word I would use. "Don't" triggered my fight-or-flight response. Heh-heh. In the future, I'll just end the album after track 8.
Already loved your channel, but now recognizing TPOH all around blew me away. Love these "best album" segments. TPOH is one of my all time favorites, but LOVE JUNK is the absolute best they did. Looking forward to see if Spilt Milk by Jellyfish, another fantastic but overlooked album in my opinion, makes a later cut. Thanks for the feedback too.
Thanks man!
love junk-pursuit of happiness, roll with it-steve winwood, staring at the sun-level 42, provision-scritti politti, vivid-living colour.
Love the diversity on this list. Likely mine is diverse again!
I'll be back later..
1. Erasure: The Innocents
2. The Pursuit of Happiness: Love Junk
3. Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation
4. Camper Van Beethhoven: Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart
5. Soul Asylum: Hang Time
That Camper Van Beethoven record is pretty good. Kinda weird, but good.
1. Nothing's Shocking - Jane's Addiction
2. Sufer Rosa - The Pixies
3. Operation Mindcrime - Queensryche
4. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - Iron Maiden
5. Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth
Love the diversity. - Joe

1 viva hate, morrissey
2 the house of love
3 from langley park to memphis , prefab sprout
4 now that's what i call quite good, the housemartins
5 fisherman's blues , waterboys
Surprised no one has mentioned Wire - A Bell Is A Cup, Until It is Srruck, and Throwing Muses - House Tornado.
Operation Mindcrime is the greatest concept album of all time!IMHO*
🏆 Daydream Nation -Sonic Youth (the kings of noise-rock at the height of their powers... SY turned dissonance into a high art form)
RUNNER-UPS:
▪︎Nothing's Shocking -Jane's Addiction (came within a whisker of winning... a couple songs on this album still give me goosebumps)

LIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR:
▪︎Rank -The Smiths
Stronger year than I was thinking it would be going in.
Of course, the problem with that Metallica album is the lack of bass. There's a version of the album on youtube called "And Justice for Jason" with bass and it kicks ass.
@@179rich I'm a guitar player so maybe I don't miss the bass much as I should. lol ... but, yeah, I'll check it out.
1. Traveling Wilburys - Volume I
2. Living Colour - Vivid
3. Robert Plant - Now & Zen
4. Sade - Stronger Than Pride
5. Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman
And honorable mentions goes to:
Yngwie Malmsteen - Odyssey
The Traveling Wilburys
Megadeth - So Far So Good...
Metallica - ...And Justice For All (Would have been in my Top 5 if it wasn't for the horrendous production)
Queensrÿche - Operation Mind Crime
W.A.S.P. - The Headless Children
David Foster - The Symphony Sessions
Testament - The New Order
Toto - The Seventh One
Sandra - Into A Secret Land
Slayer - South of Heaven
I do like Skyscraper. Fun record. - Joe
1988: (Year Average 8.4)
1. Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman (9)
2. And Justice For All - Metallica (8.5)
3. Beelzebubba - The Dead Milkmen (8.5)
4. Spirit Of Eden - Talk Talk (8)
I find these kinds of sweeping proclamations annoying.
My Top 5:
1. IRON MAIDEN - Seventh Son
2. A-HA - Stay On These Roads
3. TRAVELING WILBURYS - Traveling Wilburys

Great stuff! Didn't expect to see the amazing Fred Frith here. Also love Gravity.
I feel the same way you do about Green- good album, but a tick weaker than Murmur, Reckoning, and Life's Rich Pageant.

Yay.... nice one Kramzer....I think Green is cool for me because it broke into my stubborn grunge and metal phase so well in the early 90s.....
12:20 r.e.m. WITHOUT Michael stipe ?????😳😳😳🤯🤯🤯 this is insane. His voice, his attitude, his vocal melodies, his lyrics, his songwriting.
