I am so late to the party with Sonic Youth. One of the most exciting and innovative bands I have ever come across. Now mining their back catalogue and finding gems with every turn of the shovel.
After mining which albums turned out to be your favorite? I can’t think of one I don’t like but Sister has always had my heart.
It's never too late to discover this band.
I did that also on my 36yo. I used to listen Goo album at my teenage years but now I’ve been opened the chest of they relics. I grew up watching Sonic Youth videos on MTV Brasil ❤
@@ourstarsRstars with me I find I dig their later albums much more than the older. The trilogy of Murray/Sonic Nurse/Rather Ripped are my personal favorites. They have so much music to discover, it’s endless!

We need a sound kings revival tour. Sonic Youth, Fugazi, The Jesus Lizard, Drive Like Jehu and toss in Janes Addiction. And also dream of Nirvana in the dream. Crazy random babble.
Sure do miss the sonic blessings. Not so much thurstons crazy stage dives into us with guitar. It hurt got to strum a few strings on the guitar before he left though.always wanted to meet Kim and thurston. Beyond jazz. Beyond progressive rock. Beyond a monkey that was released for an over-night-stay in a music store... Definitely a streaming, configuring sequence of sounds and thoughts that stand on their own... All that (and more) is what makes Sonic Youth so interesting to listen to.

they were my first "show" when I was 16. Bikini Kill and The Amps opened for them. Hollywood Palladium. Im jealous of myself! Amazing!!!

I feel blessed that I was able to catch 5 of their shows over the years. Always amazing, always unexpected.
I caught four shows including one where Nirvana opened for them during the bleach era. Well before nevermind came out. Must have been around 89 or something, I remember buying bleach cuz I liked them. Then a few years later, when they blew up like that it was just unbelievable! Great time for independent music. Now it's so clogged and clotted out there with mimic bands, it's hard to tell if there's anything at all that's worth listening to anymore!
Sometimes lo-fi, restrained; other shows were 'wall of sound', sonic attack. Diabolically wild.
"Drunken Butterfly" was especially great here; I really regret not having seen Sonic Youth in concert when I'd had numerous possibilities to do so (I clearly remember when they were the opening act for Neil Young.)

It's a shame we don't ear the bass more then that. Kim usually has some cool bass line that drives the whole song. Still was fun to watch tho

I now realize Sonic Youth are, in my opinion, better than the Pixies whom I love too.
i keep trying and trying to get into pixies... i think ive given up. Doolittle is sooooo fantastic but i only kinda like a few songs here and there on their other records... sonic youth, however.... just about everything from Daydream til The Eternal is either great or good. experimental jet set, a thousand leaves, and NYC ghosts are the only sonic youth records that i just cant crack (in that time period).
Both of David Bowie’s favourite bands of the 80s. I too prefer Sonic Youth to the Pixies. Something about it really feels human. It feels flawed yet otherworldly. The best I can explain my love for Sonic Youth is just that their music seems like more than them. More than this specific plain of reality. It’s like they get possessed by some ethereal being. It’s like PUNK PUNK PUNK... WTF WHERE EVEN AM I ANYMORE TAKE ME DEEPER!!!!! Out of all of my favourite bands Sonic Youth is the hardest to express my love for. Because I guess it’s so special and unique. Sorry for the rant I just love them so much.

its a shame people keep thinking they're drug addicts, the biggest proof they're not is how tight they used to play those intrincate songs in all those god forsaken, magic and otherwise virgin, alternate tunings.
+Manfred Ignacio Pérez Alemán maybe they tune this way so they can just play bars and not chords, and then make feedback.
to some degree i can see what you are saying, but their use of harmonics is very unique, they even used certain string calibers to achieve that.
Well, to be sincere i dont really know much about the technical aspect of the band. But i think their songs could be archived with more standar tunings rather to have one for each song. I don't know, they do this And sounds great. But still.
i see no one bringing good sounding quality tabs of them, or either cover bands doing a good renditions of them. please bring me some proof of what you say or i would consider your comment a bit naive
Agustin Fernandez they could not do the things they do in standard tuning trust me. I've found a website archiving the tunings for most of their songs and experimented a bit and realized some of their technique and yeah sometimes they tune so they can bar and do harmonics and chord shapes easier but that's definitely not all of it. these guys reinvented modern guitar playing and no one else comes close.

Hello... They are People Under No King (like many others great bands which have existed at that time: joy division, television, gang of four, sonic youth, etc). What about today? several from their descendence are surviving with their real music , somewhere, lost in the actual big commercial infectious crap
these people are spectators, not revelers, they appreciate art and culture to which they contribute, they are aware of their existence int he best possible way because they choose the best in the world and leave the rest

@@miguelmagalhaes4795she can but i'd rather she not. she shouldn't play a trumpet really badly on a song that she shouldn't be playing it on. and most free jazz players actually know how to play their instruments so this doesn't really fall under free jazz it's more like a little kid playing a kazoo.
Thurston probably wrote the song and that was Kim’s FU. Kim = “I’ve never once played the trumpet but Thurston I think this song needs some trumpet love.”
