5 reasons why I chose the MG HS as my new car!

- A couple of days back I wrote a blog about the 5 reasons I chose the MG HS Trophy as my new ride. But for those who felt it was TLDR, here’s the easier to digest video version!

Love mine, mine is the "Exclusive" model (UK) Tho i love the overal quality i did still dislike the plastic bits such as the plastic on the steering wheel, luckily i was able to find a cheap used one online so i got it, then sent it off, the centre of the wheel is now wrapped to the colour of the car with a better looking MG badge in the middle of it, all complimented by the leather too.. Looks so much better.
I had one of these as a rental a couple of weeks back. The week prior, I'd been given an MG3: I was shocked at how bad it was. That the best part about it was the heater says a lot. So I didn't have high expectations when I was handed the key to an HS: Again, I was shocked. Only this time, due to how good it was.
Cool video. One important thing is the 5 star Euroncap. I own the 2.0 liter 228HP thirsty but lots of power.
I am considering the MG ZS as well to replace my 12 year old Toyota Innova. Like you, the Geely Coolray is on my list; but I agree with you--it's too new. I'm still waiting for long term reviews. Thank you for sharing your purchase decision.
My cousin has one and let me drive it to Tagaytay from QC. It is really comfortable, I might say maybe more comfortable than a cx-5 and tucson that i personally have! Anyway the only thing i didn't like about the car is the transmission in stop and go traffic. When i drove this in Makati the gear shifts are too weird, sometimes jerky. i don't know, might just be me. Other than that the ride quality is verrrrry very good in decent to no traffic. It is also very good to look at! saka na siguro pag may budget na ako hehe
Thanks for this video, James. I've been shopping around for the same lineup of cars you mentioned in your video, however, I haven't considered the MG HS until now. I currently have a Ford and was looking into purchasing a Territory BUT the aftersales service is really holding me back! I've just had bad experience with the service of Ford and it pains me to bring my car to the dealership for every PMS. I will definitely look into the MG HS :)
I have an MG HS Exclusive purchased new have covered 10000 miles not one single problem cost me 26K British pounds the equivalent Ford Kuga was £37k (which the MG replaced) a no brainer with 7 years warranty.
Im looking to get the HS PHEV in the future. Looking forward to getting it

FYI: MG isn't a British brand anymore and is in fact part of the state-owned SAIC Motor Corporation (formerly known as the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation).

Hello James ... Can I get your comments on the driving dynamics of this car. I was considering this and your opinion means a lot. However last month Caco Tirona of Autodeal released a review and he had some concerns with the transmission ... he said ....
Sluggish transmission ... specially in traffic ... jerky
Slips on an incline ... the car rolls back when you stop on an incline.

I dont really care the opinions of other people because at the end of the day your personal perception is what matters, because we all have different kinds of taste in handling a vehicle Caco Tirona is a reviewer of all sorts of vehicles such as luxury ones, when a person drives high tier cars and get used to it unlike the british cars are not the same as other cars they were always driving on it.

@@ljamesretuya sometimes what is inconvenience to others is convenient to some people, all i am saying is if Caco doesnt like the cons he notice in this vehicle which can be nothing to other people when they drive this because some people can adjust or just not too meticulous when driving such vehicles.
Sir i actually owned one MG HS Trophy and I've been using this for 3 weeks now and in each and every time i drove this i fell in love with it even better and for that auto deal reviews sir just read and hear about it because not all units will be just the same or will be like that..for one I've never experienced that "lagging" issues they've been throwing, all I've been experiencing is all "POWER"..for an instance im only using the ECo mode and it runs like feather in the wind when u step on the gas for speed remember thats only on Eco mode but u can run even in 100km/hr or so without any rough sound on it's engine that's absolutely WOW! fantastic! What more if ur on Normal or sport mode..i used that sport mode once and sorry to say guys my nephew who uses a fortuner i beat him easily in an open hi way still i am not using the super sport mode which I'm feeling a bit scared to use because i cannot imagine the power it would bring in my driving if im gonna use that mode? I will never have any regrets in buying this MG HS Trophy! This is a super car for me...and the convenience it givesq while ur inside its really superb it feels like ur in a hi class five star hotel with its air-conditioning running so cool and the engines runs like ur running in a water so quiet and all u can feel is power! Well sir or to others that may came upon and read my comment pls don't get angry with me for it's my own opinion only with what i am experiencing in using my car...i maybe lucky for buying this one without that lagging issues.. thank u guys...
I test drove 3 models yesterday. The cheaper models are gutless rubbish & I honestly don't know how anyone but a first car buyer could stand them. Very jerky, clunky transmission & the lag on take off is scary when you're trying to beat oncoming traffic off a corner. If you get at minimum a 1.5 litre turbo with sport mode it's much much better for the average driver.
I didn't know about slipping 😳 but it does have some sort of anti-slip button, so perhaps that needs to be engaged.
I bought the car despite there being a few things I dislike immensely because I can get used to them, and it's a feature packed car with the necessary things I need for disability modifications at the best price around. Good luck!

Hey James, I am from Australia so I don't know if the HS I got for my wife is available where you are, a year ago I bought my first fully electric car, it was an MG ZS EV & I had plans to get the Toyota rav4 for the wife but when she came to the MG dealers to test drive the ZS EV she noticed the HS & really loved the look of it so we test drove one while we were there & due to the price difference & wait time of the Rav4 we decided to look into the HS but not the normal HS, we ended up going for the HS PHEV. So it's more than just a hybrid, It is capable of driving on full EV mode & personally after recently driving both HS & ZS petrol models, I feel the electrified versions all be it much more expensive, are far better to drive, but that, like most things are purely subjective to personal opinion. One big thing I found with the petrol models is the auto transmission, always changing up gears to be more efficient which fights against performance. With the HS PHEV, it has 10 gears, 6 normal gears & 4 to help the electric motor sync in with the petrol power plant & compared to the ICE variants, it seems to smooth out the gear changes to improve the driving experience. I went for the ZS EV because I wanted to go electric & this was the cheapest EV on the market in Australia, Plus most people can't even tell it is an EV.
Does this car come with the 360 cam? i havent seen it in the brochure or in any reviews. hows the drive with a dual clutch transmission

"parts availability" ? it may not be true or just in my case, I have an MG HS Trophy 2022, it was hit by a PUV jeep on the driver's side the door needs replacement. It has been three months now still the parts have not yet arrive. whose or what is the problem here?, is it the Insurance? or the company who is handling MG (Chevrolet)

...agree. 98% of the time that you're w/ the car is when you're actually driving it. the seats are really comfortable. swaying towards mg (vs geely) because of this.
How is the infotainment? is it really bad as being complained in many youtube blog?
is that an AWD? or does it even a consideration before u decide purchasing it in the first place??

@2:23 you mentioned it had a 360-degree camera. Other YT reviewers, and a salesperson, say it does not. Can you clarify, please.
The 360 camera is for the next versions of the HS T (Hopefully in 2023). Currently, the ZS T 2023 is the one with 360 camera view.
I'm also torn between Geely and MG but I think Sojitz G auto is also a reliable "custodian" of Geely as they held Mitsubishi more than 20 years before taking Geely.

As much as I know this MG HS is a DCT Dual Clutch Transmission and I barely say that DCT can be like a Transformer sounds like when changing gear you can hear the transmission how the gear works. 😆 Plus some says that MG only recommend a 95+ Octane for this type of Car. 🤔 Thus this also equipped with MG Auto Pilot?
I Just bought my MG Zs, last may 5, nothing can say about it. Just enjoy the cAr no complain 👌

Na worried lang ako kasi ang dami kong nakitang reviews na sluggish daw yung transmission at nagslislip siya so medyo kinakabahan lang talaga ako so reading your review made me feel at ease po. It’s not. Crawling in traffic is bad. Take it out on a test drive first before purchasing.

as an owner of MG HS myself, all of these points are spot on, especially number 5, because of the anti mainstream style, but also one of the reason i choose MG is because of it's history!

I test drove 3 MGs yesterday (& bought one). Anything less than the 1.5l turbo is a waste of time unless you're an old lady, and as the models go up in price the transmission improves. The cheapest SUV range is IMO not worth buying because its a clunky ride & the transmission does things that "in my day" would have my car at the mechanics.
I bought the Excite 1.5T & there's a few things about it i really do not like just from sitting in it (like the stupid obstructive box at the rear vision mirror) but the average person won't have a problem with the transmission being so-so on the more expensive models.

I watched caco's review and yeah he really emphasized that transmission concern
I've never experienced that issues on my MG HS Trophy sir.. i tried that in a more uphill road like the one in Batangas going up to Tagaytay proper all i experienced is all power sir..maybe not all units have the same concerns..

That’s why it comes with hill assist feature I use it on hills all the time it never roles backwards

I'm holding my next car purchase on the CS35. : ) I just can't blame meself comparing this with the GCR where u get to experience this daily "exhilarating fun in city driving now and worry about ur bloated gas expenses later" anxiety.

Is this really your car or not? Because if this was really your car and you were really a car enthusiast you would know that this car does not come with a 360 degree camera in our country.
I think for me the Ford Territory is the better choice because with so many branches all over the Philippines. The after sales service and parts availability of Ford is much more improved compared to the previous yesteryear. And for MG HS is just copied design of Hyundai Tucson so there's nothing to like except the interior really really Good.
Also, Ford Territory is a rebadge Yusheng S330.

Funny how different countries have different warranties, we have a 7 year unlimited km warranty on all MG models.

OK I got my fully loaded HS(thailand) and the car feels like a luxurious car like a BMW, Mercedes etc etc inside great 👍 outside looks great and for the price great...but the electrics on the car are so horrible....I've had to download new software on it only after 2 months
I bought an MG yesterday and when I was chatting with thr guy who sells the extras I asked if there was a problem with transmission specifically (bc I'd heard there is) and he said not really (lol) but the software needs a lot of updates. I was surprised he was honest about that. It seems like a simple process though so I didn't fault that.
Can you update at home or do u need a mechanic to do it? I've never owned a modern car until now!

Well …we got one and it has a huge problem with transmission just after 7 months .
Before purchasing please ask Saler those questions.
How long does it takes to repair let’s say Transmission or rooftop?
Do they provide Temporary Car replacement ?
Do they provide allowance/compensation while on repair ?
Guess what … they don’t .
Don’t do our mistakes .
Don’t get me wrong … MG is a great car BUT AfterSale/customer service is a Nightmare. We are very disappointed .
Guess what …? We are back to renting a car .

I think this guy has buyers remorse, he doesn’t tell you how underpowered the engines are or that the entertainment system takes forever to launch and when it does it’s so laggy it’s in another time zone.
You’re wrong on all accounts the 1.5 has 160bhp enough for a family car unless you’re a boy racer who likes to put their foot down at traffic lights. The infotainment systems does take around 9 seconds to load the sat nav after that it’s fine to use and switch between the different features.
Do you own a MG HS Trophy? I do. Yes, there is a lag, but it is almost imperceptible. The engine kicks and I brought the car up the mountains recently with 4 heavy weights in the car and it just kept giving. I'me very happy with the dynamic performance. The paddle shifters are great for in the spot driving and the cruise control is great for maintaining the 60kph on the Skyway. Oh, yes, the interior and the features are great! ("You got me at sunroof")... Great family car, but can also be a dynamic car when I want to feel like a bachelor :)

I can't understand your choice James, you choose a car that can stand out.. but you choose a white one, thats the 70% of SUV color out there.. just like you said "everybody's got one" in this case a white one

All of your reasons can be found in loads of much better cars.
You are correct BUT at £20K more
False advertising. The MG HS doesn’t have a 360 camera. It also doesn’t have all the bells and whistles as you eloquently put it. No active parking assist, no adaptive cruise control, both of which are present in the Ford Territory.
Just don’t get the dct auto gearbox

Looks good but the electronics are crap on it the sat nav is bad I had mine 3 months had so many problems the place I brought it from ordered the wrong colour and wrong colour interior

Am afraid its the worst decision you have made in your in life. It has very bad reputation overseas for being unreliable. Its transmission has very bad review, Lots of head ache later
MG is just a shitly-made and cheaply-copied Mazda.
It’s a terrible car, all current Mg non ev’s are bloody awful. The perceived quality soon shows itself to being just skin deep. Engines is awful, gearbox even worse, you mention economy …it’s really poor, warranty and after sales service from mg is the worst I’ve experienced. Oh and it’s not part English and also there no leather in the car is plastic.
