Absolutely agree, with the exception of the fact that some of these people building FD cars for grassroots are looking to progress to FD as quickly as possible. I've no intention of getting to FD, so I'm fine with my 328. On the other hand, a guy at the track started drifting last season, and this season he got second in the Spec-D Prospec Shootout this season. Everyone's got different needs and goals. But it's great to see people showing the benefits of not having crazy horsepower cars at the track too! Cheers guys👊
I attended a Drift school with DeNofa teaching and took 3rd in our series last year, he knows so much about the e36 and helped me tremendously with setting mine up.
Last year Chelsea came by my house and picked up a car my son stored for him. He was towing his e36 back from California and pulled it off the trailer loaded up the Toyota and his GF drove his car back to Portland from Medford Oregon. The car is just that reliable that he beats it to death and can still be driven hundreds of miles on the highway.

You gotta do it like the Japanese do it, which is what Chelsea is saying to do. Get a car that just runs, and throw the bitch. Once you know what you're doing then you buy more parts, including maybe some replacement bumpers.
Yep that's why the Japanese drifters can really throw down. Cos of their attitude to modification. Less is more. Reliability is preferable to huge Dyno numbers. Time behind the wheel is the biggest performance increase.

If you like chelsea and have a cool down be a lap around the track following instead of drifting then its cool even if the VQ is murder on the ears. It also depends on experience.
I heard NO ONE on the entrance in the begging till he caught it perfectly
I attended a Drift school with DeNofa teaching and took 3rd in our series last year, he knows so much about the e36 and helped me tremendously with setting mine up.
Last year Chelsea came by my house and picked up a car my son stored for him. He was towing his e36 back from California and pulled it off the trailer loaded up the Toyota and his GF drove his car back to Portland from Medford Oregon. The car is just that reliable that he beats it to death and can still be driven hundreds of miles on the highway.
He's building an MR2 :O
Instant-like from me
Lmao when I saw h wearing a welding cap just to wear one I instantly subbed
That first video of pats acers drift is dope asf and it's only 20 mins away from me lol
I need to drift there with my buddy Chelsea soon! Last time I tried it was flooded.
I miss you guys drifting together in Ebisu like years back :D
We used to share the same trailer and travel the country back in the 2008-2009 time period.
This was covered a long time ago in the Drift Bible Best Motoring video. Find a solid FR platform and get seat time.
"Scool of Drift" sounds like an awesome movie where a crazy substitute teacher teaches elementary kids how to drift & then sneaks them out to compete in Formula D. Lmao.
That intro clip HAS to be Pat's! Some crazy events there!
BrownyCakes1 def is pats acres
Chelsea is such a legend!
Got my 1 lady owner E36 328i manual last week, i'll be keeping it 100% stock like the gem that it is
I drift a pretty much stock car and when I have money to spend, if its spend it on an event OR spend it on parts. I choose go drive every single time. I don't have a ton of experience or anything but its pretty obvious to me that seat time improves my driving wayyy more than new parts.
This is what I really want to get into I want a daily drifter/driver but with a 4 seats always been looking at the g35 or e36/e46 I heard they go through problems tho like vanos the g35 oil issues etc
Go with a g 35 bro get a plenum spacer and just when you take it to the track check the oil after every few runs.
Super fun and honest info!!! Great videos
Great interview, also if you guys want to hear more from Chelsea listen to The Tandem Podcast by Mike Farr! He also has great interviews with Nate from Villians, Micah Diaz, Matt Panic, etc.
Where do I find this podcast?
AJ Rubio Spotify or iTunes
Ryan Olson thanks!
Ryan Olson can’t seem to find Chelsea on Spotify
Or check out his RUclips channel, oh wait he hasn't posted in 2 months!
Got to see this guy the other day at fd and hes such a cool guy to be around
Send what I have that's always been my motto. Mine is a stock G35 Sedan 5AT with an open diff. I just built up the suspension as I got better. Seat time is all that matter to me.
Get a diff! It makes such a huge difference that it should really be the first or second mod to a drift car - either before or after a seat.
@@NGNMYokohama I'm getting a 1.5 clutch type from cusco. Honestly it is day and night difference from when I drove friends cars. I've been sending it open diff for 5 years haha. All of my upgrades prior were suspension pieces.
Just got my first bmw e36 m3 gonna be hella fun
Ironic I came here cause my father just sold me 97 318ti for $800. I'm definitely enrolling in your school!
I need that Mapei hat because I have the matching cycling jersey.
so drive by wire is complicated but you swapped drive by wire engine?
This video can’t stop me bec I can’t read
I'd say it would be much better just getting a C5 or C6 and adding angle or a 370Z and do angle, exhaust, tune, and suspension.
The less money and closer to stock you are the better time you will have overall. Less maintenance, less cost, and more seat time.
Look at Adam LZ. Seat time 350Z, Seat time R32, Mild S13, Pro S15.
Cheap drift car challenge accepted! Just did a 3 day event again way under 1000 dollar. Even finished 4th against only 500hp+ cars.
I drive a e36 320i with a ebay turbo 320hp. Only buy new tires for competition, (225-45-17) training sessions on free junkyard tires.
Sleep at the track in the van, so no hotel costs.
A s54 engine is not considered cheap in my eyes even in europe haha.
Awesome video! I have a 330i with is my drifter. Got it super cheap and love it. It deserves a little turbo though.
been following you on multiple accounts still looking forward to one day meeting you in japan @matsuri hopefully one day i can get the money to go!
This is EXACTLY why my Exocet is an NA 1.6 Miata underneath. It has lived on track and bouncing off the rev limiter for a decade plus now and keys live in it at Autocross so anyone can take it out.
@Even Shanks need to watch this video. thinks having more power and a hand brake is going to make him a better drifter...lol
Well a working hand brake could help lol.
My 83 f2t corolla 150hp does fine with no handbrake. Its me that doesn't do fine
That's why he has the 350
You gotta do it like the Japanese do it, which is what Chelsea is saying to do.
Thanks for this information. When I get my first car my goal is to turn it into a daily drifter. So it’s going to be cheap. Thanks for all this information
BMW' compacts have e30 m3 like rear suspension and e36 m3 like front suspention and its light as a feather =D big motor compacts are crazy fun :D
subtract all the "m3" from your comment and you are basically right :D
Great video like always!
Miata 195/50/15’s are less than 40$ a piece.
I too, like the idea of having a good, fun car, that happens to drift as well.
Thx marky mark when’s the next ep coming out.
😍 great interview
5mins in and I already love this video!
Wish we had that money per fun factor, the e36 turbo build is exactly as Chelsea says: "why am I doing this, every time I drive"
so many reasons covered in this video are exactly why I'm not interested in competition drifting
Drifting comps are fun because they get everyone together! You get a chance to drive with great drivers that you normally wouldn't get a chance to drift with, so they have their upsides! I did a season of D1GP just so I could tandem with rad D1GP drivers from Japan with Chelsea, it was so much fun and so cool.
@@LoneStarDrift if there was a comp where everyone had 15" wheels and 200hp or less i MIGHT be more inclined but judging usually just takes away from the individuality of driving style bc you need to be on this line at that angle. i have no intention of getting a 300+hp car with 18 inch wheels anytime soon just to make everyone else excited. i prefer to sharpen my skills with 150hp and u can't compete like that and expect to have fun if u lose before the first corner
I want to see more MR2. What happened to the build???
ITS A VIDEO OF MY BOI TALKIN BOUT MY DREAM CAR!! *NUT BUSTED*
But nusted.
I was inspired by his Ti and now drift a C230 hatch, its literally the ugliest hatch like ever made and I love it
How many times can you be wrong in 60 seconds? Let's find out on the opening of today's episode!
Chelsea used to say the car was 2400 pounds all the time lol! I was just repeating what he said lol.
@@LoneStarDrift He is a god damned liar but man can he chuck a BMW into a skid.
Aaron , keeping it REAL with the Mapei cycling cap!
agree, but s54 is not really good example, for price of s54 (+ reseal, rod bearings etc) in europe you can build m50 stroker turbo...
I love how transparent Chelsea is
I love this channel
this is my favorite video ever
These are the videos I love lmao
So much info! Thanx again
my sons mother hit a tree at 100 (60mph) and just bounced off the tree spinning down the road in an aw11. That was with a RUSTED out reo bar behind the bar . ambos said in a normal car she'd have been dead. They weren't cheaply built back in the day. The snap oversteer thing is a series 1 sw20 thing too.
no, a modern car is safer. You dont want a stiff car when crashing.
@@alexstromberg7696 mustang?! 😂
Where can we find the set up video for this compact?
Jay from Real Street talking about drift cars lol
i watched that first reverse entry about 4 times ... jeez ...
Love his approach to have calculated efficient way of having fun. From car cost e36 dirt cheap to the tire size based on price. Would he go as far as VR and Simulators.. cost per fun factor
Awesome content like always! You got me wondering if my vq 240sx is over built now or if it's right in the middle🤔 tubed front roll cage angle kit etc.. you can see it on my channel.
A VQ 240sx is not over built, that would be a super reliable cheap car to drive long term. It gets my stamp of approval, even if my ears hate you lol.
It all depends on how its done. A vq swap done to make as much power as possible and having to check every possible failure point after 3 laps, then its definitely over built. If you like chelsea and have a cool down be a lap around the track following instead of drifting then its cool even if the VQ is murder on the ears. It also depends on experience. My first year learning to drift, having a turbo kit on my miata was too overbuilt compared to the stock s13 hatch (we have sr20s stock in NZ) i use now and just go through 40 laps an event
I think it’s up to u what u want
Amen, i agree with every reason chelsea delivered in this video. im tired of drifting local comps because everyone has an over built car, anyone else agree?
It was a popular video in this channel, I think a lot of people agree!
9:45 i disagree with you on that. i'm pretty sure that Taka Aono has had his drift school setup for about 8 years now out in California
Team Orange has had one forever too.
This was real, appreciate every word
I used to be one of those guys that used to swear up and down about building big horsepower motors until a friend of mine showed me the way he just kept on buying junkyard Motors Dawson a turbo on them beat the piss out of them till they blow up and go buy another junkyard motor for 300 bucks toss it in there and he's back on the track in a couple of hours whereas you're built motor blows now you're down for five grand and two three weeks of downtime I love junkyard Motors you don't have care about them
How to get seat time
Step 1: buy 350Z
Step 2:
There is no step 2. You just buy a 350Z and you will get ALL the seat time 💪🏻
AK Media great cars, if only VQs sounded better!
lol
@@ryanolson6794 holy shit they sound awful.
@@ryanolson6794 the only car I would put quieter mufflers on.
Yep, everything about 350z’s and VQs make for a great simple car but fuck, I can’t drive something that sounds like an elephant!
i wish i was in america for summer to learn to drift but i need to work in finland and there are no tracks here.
i have a black e30 that is rusty and wont run some electrical problem but dont know how to fix and would like to swap the engine but no moneys
We're going to need to see that MR2
Chelsea is so damn right !
