How rusty can a 32 year old BMW E30 really be?

  • While I have the rear subframe out of the E30, I thought I'd do a small video on how much rust it has - turns out, more than I thought... I think I need to learn to weld.

Don't know how the car is doing todays, but man dont worry, that isnt a lost cause at all. those are quite easily fixed areas and wont be too hard to do if you can hold a grinder and a welder. One area at a time and the best is to grind and cut all contaminated bits off and patch them with new sheet metal. a lot of areas are saveable just by grinding, acid paint and seal, no need to weld. Best i can say is, do one area at a time, dont even think about the other spots before you have finished the area you are working on or it can get overwhelming

+ honestly its quite possible to do in a small budget aswell. only main cost is the welding part, but you shoud do it yourself if possible

Appreciate the comment, the car is still sat on axle stands, bought an e46 which required work, working 5 days a week and British weather getting in the way 😂 hopefully this year it'll be back on the ground!

You should repair it, even though you say it’s “ok“ for it to be rusty just because it’s 32 years old, I don’t really think it’s ok, I mean it will end up being a huge pile of rust and it will be one e30 less on this planet, but rust can be repaired by using several methods like welding or just use a filler for minor rust damage, then paint it to prevent rust from coming back :)

Yeah the plan is a full body restoration eventually, it's just having the time/money/space to do so. I'm going to take up a welding course so I can atleast start sorting things out - for the light rust I've ground it back, etch primed and undersealed everything. The big holes will need sorting before the MOT so someone will cut/plate it for me 👍 don't worry, it won't end up a complete pile of rust 😂

@@Keats.Garage that’s some good news I’m really happy to hear that! I’m soon having my moms e30 320i coupe that she bought back in 1989, a few rust spots but nothing bad, I’ll fix it all this summer. And it’s the same color as yours as well ;) Can’t wait to see 2 beautiful rust free e30s back on the roads 😁. Cheers from France 👍🚗
