My BMW E30 always smelt of fuel, it was worse than I thought!

  • Continuing on with my BMW E30 restoration, I decided to investigate why the car smelt of petrol when you put more than 30L of petrol in the tank. It turns out that it was worse than I thought, it wasn't just a split hose...

Great to see angles on the car not often viewed. Keep it going. Enjoyable watch

I've pretty much seen every part of this car over the past 10 years, and my god is it rusty in places 😂 happy to show people the reality of old car ownership

Commenting and watching in full because that's what the algorithm wants.

Damn, your tank looks very similar to how mine looked to be fair, hole in exactly the same place too with tell-tale paint peeling.
I was able to save mine in the end, but it was a lot more work than I set out to do. 😂 If you can get a new one for a reasonable price, your life will be much easier. Failing that, you'll have to watch my video about soldering a patch on that same fuel tank rust hole. 😅
    Keep at it mate!

I bought a new tank in the end! Wasn't worth the hassle when it's probably knackered and rusty internally aswell 😬 £300 for a tank was expensive though!
It needs to be back on the road soon because I'm hopefully moving house this year 😂

I love that you wore goggles for the first bit then went under without them and started pulling rust off in your face

I tried! It's also very hot wearing full goggles in the current climate 😂 also, they look real stupid - though less than having rust in my eye I guess 🤔

That will need new inner and outer arches. I'm currently restoring a sport and it needed them too. They all rust in the usual areas, front jacking pads, jacking points, rear arches etc. Good luck

Trick to get the tank out without dropping it, is if you spin the jack round 90 degrees, and then you can use the jack to support the far end, and your hand on this end, and just pull it out by the jack handle and your hand fully supported.

Nice video mate, I remember doing my fuel tank, not fun. Had to replace it in the end. Good job tho!

Yeah it's a bit of a pig, but wasn't too bad - in the process of putting the whole thing beck together now, it's been a bit of a mission
