Mondale was a corrupt, evil man with
a daughter who stripped for Playboy.
He was not a patriot, he did not serve
his country, and voters during this time
saw right through him, which is why they
      voted for his opponent.

While I would have probably voted Reagan, I want to give Mondale my huge support. He is a centrist, no bullshit, and ready to fight for what is right, not what he thinks will make him win. I don't think he was ahead of his time. he like president Carter was a victim of the times. It was very hard for him to overcome an economy that was booming and a president who could play the part to the hilt. he was tied to the failures of the carter administration even though he didn't really have much input into policy. I don't think that he was a bad guy at all. he was part of the last group of Democrats who actually gave a shit about the country instead of just playing politics. I now know what you meant by being a head of his time by picking a female running mate which always ends badly. just ask McCain how it worked out for him. I have a lot of respect for the man who took the biggest asswhooping in election history and didn't bitch about how he was screwed over like Clinton. I had recently turned 18 so Fritz Mondale was the first person that I voted, I know that I was right then and no amount of money could persuade me to recant that conviction.
I was heavily involved in Democratic party politics at the time and my folks and I drove out to the airport to welcome him back to Minnesota. There was a huge rally in one of the big hangers and while we were waiting for the 3 big jets to come in the congressmen pumped up the crowd.
When came in it was such an emotional moment for the crowd people had tears in their eyes. Fritz pumped up the crowd giving us the impression that he was going to win. He said "Minnesota has given me so much and tomorrow I will give her a president"
On election day, which was the day after the big rally, I was planning to go to the victory rally/concession speech but my mother would not let me because I had failed to clean my bedroom that day, I love my mother but I still hold that against her.
I was allowed to go to the local party and before I got in the bathtub Reagan was up like 54 to 3(God love D.C.) and when I got out of the tub it was 254 to 3 and I started to bawl.
What we found out later on was that Bond deal was briefed by his pollsters a month or so before the election and he was told in no uncertain terms that it is just absolutely impossible for you to be elected president and Fritz Mondale campaign 18 hours a day for an entire month giving 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 Rally's a day and he kept it up with good spirit and keeping crowds pumped up for an entire month knowing that it was all for naught. There are few men in American Life who could do that he would have been such a wonderful president and Minnesota had lost its second vice president running for the presidency in 20 years. Hubert Humphrey would have been a wonderful president as well the potential that those two men were brought to the presidency was just stunning.
