    I'm not a sailor; know nothing about sailing except what I see on videos such as yours. I think I found your channel by following a news link about a couple that was unaware of the global pandemic. So that's how I got here. Why I stayed is the quality of the content, your determination and perseverance, and quite simply the story telling.
    I started at episode 36, later went back and watched 35, and I finishing up 54 now. I'm now going back and making sure I've liked them all - every little bit helps, right.
    So far I've found the boat work videos the most enjoyable. I'm also binge watching Bums on a Boat and boy, did they buy a wreck. I'd like to say that you lucked out with the boat you bought but I think luck had nothing to do with it; I get the sense you knew what you were doing.
    Finally, I'd like to say, OMG, that Tayana 37 is beautiful boat!
    Safe travels

    It’s a bit late as you have already left to cross the Atlantic, but I use a kettle like this to boil water in heavy seas, to supplement the fixed stove/cooktop. The bars are brazed to the bottom of the kettle, and you hang it from the overhead so it can swing all ways. Gives hot food in a storm.

    • @alanprichard9313
      @alanprichard9313 4 года назад

      I’m sorry the photo didn’t seem to come through. It was a classic Bluet type gas camping stove, with the pot stand rods brazed to the bottom of a classic kettle. This hangs from the cabin ceiling, and can swing any direction. You can heat water, or anything else, that fits in the kettle, in any weather, a great moral booster in rough weather. I applaud your use of the fixed stove/cooker, and deep pots and fiddles. I sometimes wonder if gimbaled stoves were developed by armchair sailors. The spill something terrible when they hit their ‘stops’. PS always wear foul weather pants when cooking in weather.

    Another great one! The tall ship was moored in Portsmouth a few years ago next to me, we spent the evening drinking rum and singing on deck until about 2am, they had a load of musical instruments playing too, such great fun, but my 28 footer that I had then looked like a tender to the tall ship, they wanted me to climb up the mast, which I did (before the drinks) I'll always remember the night of fantastic hospitality!

      @David Kopp It seems the wrong forum for such an opinion, but as you bring it up (and, with no offence to Elena and Ryan, we hope), we feel this needs a response - so here are some facts about "Bromberger Blutsonntag" (Bloody Sunday). On September 1 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland (including attacks on the city of Bydgoszcz), thus starting the Second World War. Polish troops held out in Bydgoszcz for two days, and the local German and Polish (Slavic and Jewish) civilian populations suffered Luftwaffe attacks. On September 3 and 4, fighting broke out between the regular armed forces and between civilians, during which time Polish and German neighbours were killed, sometimes by each other. This was a time of war, in a Polish city (in which Nazi German records show that there were civilian paramilitary groups and intelligence cells charged with supporting German army regulars and the destruction of German civil assets in the city in order to stoke the fires of hatred), during which Poles acted in defence of Polish territory against hostile forces. Please remember that Poland bears no responsibility whatsover for the outbreak or execution of the Second World War. By the way, "Polish", not "polish"; different words, different pronunciation, different meaning :)

    Loving your videos and you guys really are living the dream! Particularly living aboard fulltime. You're both young and doing this at the right time. I spent years touring Europe in motorhomes and my dream was to sell the house and go fulltime but it's easier said than done. At least by 60 i was able to retire and spend more time touring but in 2018 after a long tour, decided to sell my van and look around for something with more space....but mid 2019 i was diagnosed with prostate cancer and my world came crashing down. My motorhome was sold and i've given up ideas of going back to touring as i'm 70 now and scheduled to have surgery. So yes, make the most of your lifestyle as you just never know whats around the corner as i found out! Hey i sold one motorhome i owned to a sail boat guy like yourselves. He sold his house in Lancashire, then sold off everything else and bought an ocean going yacht. Spent the next few years crossing the Atlantic back and forth, met his wife in Bermuda, and they bought my van to do some touring when the yacht was berthed in Holland.

We got our work done over winter and started out heading East a week before lockdown. Only got as far as the Mar Menor and are now trapped in here by the bridge which isn't manned. It's okay though as it's a good safe anchorage and Spainish lockdown is very strict so theres no pleasure sailing allowed. Hope you've found a good place to sit it out and you have some freedom to get on shore.

    Ils Tabac 11 mile Sw of Alacante , had a charming little fishing in the 70’s ( long ago) we sailed their from Alacante, that was my first time experiencing clear water where we could see the bottom the whole way , 100’ derp ( hope it’s still like that???). We tied up to the harbour wall for a couple of nights. We were woken in the middle of the night by this noise we had been hearing for an hour or more ,Donk, donk,donk. Finally a big wooden fishing boat show up and tried to moor along side so we had to move to avoid getting crushed . They had a one cylinder semi-diesel engine , they did not turn it off ! Left it running for that night , Saturday and thru Sunday then off early Monday for another week fishing! They just came back for Sunday mass and to unload them off for another week!
    I hear there is now an expensive resort on the island and no anchoring .
    A different era .( and I’m only 61!)
    You can hear what the semi-diesel engine or hot bulb sounded like here
    ruclips.net/video/jBOJ779LtBM/видео.html
    It requires a Straight exhaust to avoid bogging the engine down

    Hey guys another great video, have you ever considered longer watches say 6 hours. As a shiftworker the last 40 years I find that short sleeps do not help and fatigue studies show that minimum rest periods of 5 hours should be observed if fatigue is to be avoided, it would seem to me that barring incident requiring all hands 8 hour shifts would see you each getting a meaningful sleep say 7-1 and 1-7 with the obvious ability to fluff if neccesary

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  4 года назад +1

      We've thought about it, but the problem at sea is sometimes you have a shift where you can't sleep - squalls, issues that need two people, so we find it best to hedge our bets and have more shorter sleeps.

The latest speculation on holiday travel is we could be unable to leave the UK for possibly up to a year. Other than travelling by boat I can't imagine holidays being possible for a long time - getting in a plane would be a scary prospect in the post corona world.

      On the day you claimed to have set off, the emergency powers act had been passed for 7 days, and UK lockdown was imposed the day preceding your departure.
      In Italy, over 9,000 people had died, the country had been in lock-down for almost 2 weeks. The army had been tasked with policing and medical assistance roles for over a week.
      It didn't escape my notice that you mentioned the name of your youtube channel on the radio.
      You claimed that on departure the virus was "dying down", and confined to China, there's no point at which both of those things occurred; China reported falling cases AFTER Italy had suffered massive casualties.
      Next time you're planning a marketing stunt, get your diary in order, and make sure the story actually makes sense.

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  4 года назад

      We set off on 28th February. The UK went into lockdown on 23RD MARCH. The figures you're reporting are from March, not February, when we set off. Just look at this graph and tell me HOW you think there were 9,000 deaths in Italy when we set off, on 28th February: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/italy/. The UK cases start even later: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/. And in China, in last days of February, the graph goes flat, just as the news reported when we set off: www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/china/.
      We put on NO STUNT. We had ZERO control over the media twisting the news and spreading it all over the world. We do have proof of our crossing, though, and of the REAL facts reported on The Guardian. This is our GPS track, can't make it up! share.garmin.com/skua. (select "view all tracks" on the top right).

      Hi Alex, this video is from October 2019. We’re a few months behind with videos, but they’ll catch up to the Atlantic crossing soon because we were in the yard for 3 months this winter and only filmed 4 videos out of that 😊👍

    • @SailingKittiwake

      Cheers. It’s just a Canon EOS M50 - the cheapest we could find. We’d love to upgrade but the salt just destroys cameras so it’s not worth it.

    Hi guys, missed the BBC report as I don't watch fiction programs. You missed nothing by being out and free. If you get the chance, get going again. This world has gone crazy, nobody asks questions any more. Waiting for the first opportunity to get off of this rock. Fair winds.

    What sort of cost is it to stay in the marinas at places like Denier and Cartagena? I live near Puerto Banus (Marbella) where all the millionaire's yachts go. I am sure the prices there are astronomical!

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  3 года назад

      Cartagena was €26 x night for us (37ft). Denia was €21 x night. This was in October. As you can tell, we’re no millionaires 😂

    Hi Guys, hope all is well in the Grenadines. I saw that you changed your batteries during the re-fit. I only saw you install two pairs of six volt, effectively just two 12 volt batteries but if you have or plan to add more in the future and you find yourselves with some spare time have a read of this piece on interconnecting batteries; www.smartgauge.co.uk/batt_con.html
    Until I stumbled across this I had no idea how critical the method is for charging and discharging multiple batteries.
    Really enjoying your well presented videos and have nothing but admiration for your determination and hard, methodical work. Brilliant achievement.
