    Loved the video. Thanks. As a photographer, I am sometimes approached on the street by people who don't like the idea of being photographed (for some reason they are suspicious of real cameras but not smartphone cameras). It can be a tricky situation to respectfully but forcefully inform them that while out in public everybody is fair game to be photographed (here in America). So, it's not necessarily just a class issue, as suggested in previous comments, but just people trying to assert what they think are their rights. As videographers/photographers it's our duty to kindly inform them of OUR rights. We shouldn't be jerks about it, as that reflects badly on all photographers/videographers. Nicely handled on your part.

The silly little 'guard' is desperate to please his master - watch any of the auditing channels on RUclips and you'll see plenty of these desperate 'little tin gods'. I'm like that with supercars now. Nothing impresses me. They all look the same, they attract too much attention and they're all useless on public roads. If I had all the money in the world, I'd want to be anonymous, not stand out.

    • @kylem324
      @kylem324 2 месяца назад +4

      I find sailboats more interesting as pieces of design and the harmony of design they need. And functionally more enjoyable. These mega yachts are often the McMansions of the sea. Their mechanical systems are often impressive engineering but the primary design principles often are gross tonnage and opulent finishes. Which is kind of meh.
      Then consider what life must be like onboard. 60 crew. 28 guests. That’s a lot of people. I’m sure many of the crew aren’t visible as they run the boat and provide five star service. And discretion comes with their roles. While that’s great, I’ve always found the personalized luxury tends to become tiresome after a few days. What I want more than access to a personal chef or drink service is privacy and autonomy. And I can’t think why I’d want 28 other guests for any amount of time. That just sounds like public transport or university housing.
      So these ships stick out wherever they go, and get lots of attention, so you lose an element of privacy and anonymity and freedom that you might have with a sailboat or smaller motor yacht. And because they’re so big, where they drop anchor is further away from shore. And to get there you need to drop one of the 30’ tenders in the water. And maybe the help of six deckhands. As you get to the beach, you better be ready for a bunch of eyeballs at the spectacle of a 500hp “dinghy” dropping you off. So they’re great if you want to impress or outshine others… but it comes at the expense privacy, autonomy, and greater freedom of movement… which are luxuries I wouldn’t trade away.

      Boats for Middle Eastern owners often have that 'cruise ship' look because they're set up for maximum interior space. Very minimal outdoor areas, for a climate where spending time outside isn't a lot of fun. I'm not a fan of the aesthetics either, but that's why they do it.

Some gorilla dude, on one of the vessels, with a gun, took offence to my innocent attempt at repair. Needless to say, we wanted photographs of our aircraft together with AF 1 and were standing back with our cameras clicking away when two very serious security guards hurried over, one with a large German Shepherd, we were told in no uncertain terms that it was forbidden to take photos of AF1.. I couldn't help but start laughing.. .. Hey guys.. this is the most photographed aircraft on the planet ! But, these guys were trained not to think or question, just obey.

    You have to know that these boats are rarely used by the owners. Max three weeks a year. Most of these are not ocean worthy, so you can straddle along the coast a bit. The people that live there are the employees, who form a loosely knit community. These crews actually get to enjoy the boat the most as they have inspect all items regularly for proper functioning. That means taking out the jet skis or zodiacs.

    • @YachtReport
      @YachtReport  2 месяца назад

      Most of what you said is incorrect. Some owners use them rarely some a lot. And all the vessels are absolutely seaworthy. They have strict surveys and are built to Lloyds/Rina etc standards. And the crew live in the crew areas, they don't live in the guest areas when the owner is not onboard. We are all either active or retired crew who work for the channel.

    If they don't want you to film their super yacht, don't moor it in a marina which has public access then. More than likely, the owner does not want you to inadvertently film him up to something that he can't do in his home country.

There’s a lot to see in Monaco, in the water and out. The boat is interesting but the owner? Who? Nah, not so much. Stand down, men.

    Katara isn't a yacht. It's a privately owned and operated cruise ship. When she is in a public space, the public can take photos. As for the life rafts, they are 25 man. Under the yacht rules the number life raft places required is the number of crew + guests + 25% per side. Thus 60 crew + 28 guests + 25% = 110, which means 5 x 25 man life rafts. QED.

    As a "street photographer" you should carry a yellow ticket that explains to the reader that their objections have no legal basis or validity. In general, in Western societies/jurisdictions.
    If you go abroad, verify what applies there.
    Anything in public space, anything visible from public space (at least with the naked eye), can be photographed without permission. People have no title to object against being photographed. They can have a temper tantrum, but that should not impress you.
    While this is also based in freedom of press and news gathering, in my country there is an option for people who have been photographed, to object against publication. This would require a special high-speed court case where the judge must agree with the matter's urgency before the trial. The essence is that a "reasonable personal interest would be damaged/harmed". Without such a case the photographer by default has the right to publish and needs no consent. In recent decades, some countries may have made an exception when minors (children) are involved. But rendering a child's face unrecognisable may be enough in that case.
    The question is what laws apply in Monaco. Considering the magistrates in the legal system are French, the differences with France will be small.

    On the little row boat Katara: first, it only has 1 helipad. And no hangar to store helicopter. Too small a boat for me 🙂
    On the tender boats with davits: makes for more space in the lower decks for other types of accomodation. And easier to deploy an individual boat without others stackled and in the way. They do hinder the view, but I assume the room(s) next to the boats don't value the view that much (home theatre etc).
    What would have been nice if if the guard would have said "come back tomorrow, the emir and its 4 mistresses will be gone and you will be free to take images from outside but today, the emir has asked that nobody find out he is here with his 4 mistresses 🙂

    Since ships use water for ballast & that water contains marine life native to that location, why not recirculate the water in the ballast tanks as you are under way? This way you are continuously changing the ballast & not bringing invasive marine life with you. It wouldn't affect the amount of ballast since the level would be maintained in the tanks. Could even use the same pumps etc. that are used to fill the tanks.
