    I appreciate this organic and slightly less technical approach (compared to lying on the floor and mobilising limbs using props etc.). I find this more accessible and practical

    My physio has started a mobility class. It's the best thing ever. He had us doing silly walks, really flapping our arms from side to side with every step! I find I'm moving my arms more when I walk now

    I never realised I don’t use my arms when walking due to bad arthritis in my ankle. Last year I had subtalar fusion and I pretty much needed to learn to walk properly. After watching this I tried it and it made a huge difference. I had to consciously think about using my arms. My lower back thanks you!

    I totally have what you describe as locking the knee and lacking rotation of the left pelvis where also my knee pain is on the same side

    Thanks Conor for this excellent tutorial of arm swing walking method. There are similar ideas in TCM walking exercise too however with arms swinging differently in order to target different organs. Like Travis’ demonstration too, precise and accurate all the time.

    This is definitely me. Twenty years after breaking my neck and jaw, and I’m having lower back problems now and have a hard time walking. I’ve been walking for years now not being able to swing my arms due to the neck injury. But I’m gonna try to let my arms move more. I stashed my right paralyzed arm into my pockets to keep it safe until it finally came back to life, but I’ve still been putting both hands in my pockets to help with the neck pain. My arms have felt too heavy for my neck for years.

    Thumbs up! Tried adapting as a running cue for distance running. Always knew, was lacking something, kept searching. At last, I seem to have managed increasing my stride length significantly. The watch doesn’t lie. Ran into cardio limit and need to practice further. Complicated dance..however, seems I’m at something to improve my running form fundamentally. 2 steps forward this time. Thank you, very much😊

    Excellent! This info is super helpful and is a necessary link for me in my current state. I have noticed that when I walk with arm movement my rib cage and shoulder feel better than when I walk in a rigid protective way. My shoulder has hurt on and off for over a year and somewhere along the way I stopped swinging it as much. This disassociation is good to know about.

    Yet another Spot On video from Connor & Trevor has arrived on my RUclips feed!
    I went to PT yesterday and didn't get much help, but this video addresses exactly what I need at this moment.
    Information is clearly given and audio/video is well produced.
    I truly appreciate the way these guys time Connor's explanation & words with Trevor's movements to demonstrate what to do and what not to do as Connor speaks.
    This matters!
    Even subtle things, such as Trevor showing how fingers are laced, and how our head might turn a bit too much is important information for the viewer at home, who might try these exercises without supervision, not feel any beneficial stretch or possible feel more pain, and thus decide that this therapeutic modality is bunk.
    It's not!
    This Stuff Works!!

    My only wish is that you film the exercises being demonstrated from the front or back as well so viewers can see how our hips, shoulders, feet, etc., should shift or remain still during exercises.
    I'm learning that every little twist and turn makes a big difference as I learn to rebalance my entire body after multiple muscular & skeletal injuries, and 13 abdiminal surgeries.
    This Humpty Dumpty gal is learning quickly that the toe bone truly IS connected to the head bone!💯💯💯💯

    The body is crazy. I always noticed my right arm doesn't swing much at all and figured it was due to my right hip being tight, shortening my stride. BUT... couldn't for the life of me figure out why my left abs are so underdeveloped compared to my right side. Wild lol thanks for always putting us up on game🙏

    I have hyper mobile joints that weren’t dxed until I’d completely wrecked my body, shoulders especially, pushing past my pain limits all day every day bathing dogs. At 20 I could effortlessly heft a 60 pound German Shepard into a bathtub. Now my shoulders are constantly subluxing and I held them rigid to protect them, messing up my trunk rotation and further twisting and doing weird shit to my ribcage trying to feel where I was in space. I’ve been working on trying different tips for arm swinging to find a method that works for me without causing my left arm especially to flop around loose and drag me off my balance if I try to just let it swing normally. This video is another useful little goldmine of things for me to try and incorporate as I figure out what works for my weird messed up discombobulated skeleton.
    On good pain days I just fold them at the base of my spine but if I’m fatigued I can’t move with the grace that usually gives me and I just hurt my wrist. Tried a cane but again wrist got mad.
    Winter weather means coats again though and I’ve found gently holding the hem of my sleeve immediatelt makes me feel more secure in space and lets me tell how long my arm is, and I subtly mime the movements I’d use if I were doing stepthroguh walking with a cane and just five minutes of that and my whole ribcage twiiists a little to the right and lets go.
    Your videos have been invaluable to me- nothing is one size fits all and I’m dealing with a lot of weird fussy physical problems that often have contradictory needs to manage and make most standard exercise routines dangerous. I’m prone to injury and dislocation, and have to compensate for years of damage from abusing my joints. All the advice about good posture and isolating and activating muscle groups that I followed dutifully just got me stuck in a hyperextended position where it feels like I’m being pulled back into my own spine.
    People often say “push until you feel pain” or “go as far as you can” but when you’re autistic, hypermobile, and have a chronic pain disorder and a lifetime of being told your own senses are lying to you… yeah I ended up following advice to move “correctly” and gradually lost any ability to get my body to move together as one unit. I knew that was my problem but finding that groove again and retraining my brain when I can’t access in person PT is slow, slow going. Right now I don’t even do the exercise parts of your videos- I will eventually but I’m not there yet. It’s the anatomical explanations that make things click for me. Once I understand what’s happening I can stop trying to isolate the “right” muscle and feel how things glide again. Once I heal up more from practicing moving in the ways that work for my body I’ll start some of the strength building but it’s the breakthroughs you’ve helped me make in balance and getting unstuck from a painfully folded posture that really blow me away.
    Sorry this is long and not strictly limited to shoulder movement but everything’s connected lol- and my arms and ribcage not fighting each other anymore is one of my first goals. I have cough variant asthma that almost killed me. I survived the years without access to inhalers bu learning to consciously control my breathing so strictly that I could disable the cough reflex. Trying to imagine breathing around my own trachea. I then got advice on diaphragmatic breathing that made it worse because I still need to climb down from top of the neck breathing to chest breathing.
    I’ve been struggling with that for so long but whenever I start feeling stuck and the panic sets in I remember your explanation of how everything works together to breathe and I’m able to climb down from my own throat and feel my ribs expand.

    EDIT: and by the by for anyone curious this kind of shit is just one small example of the harm of “therapy” trying to make autistic people act more “normal”. “Quiet hands” was so aggressively drilled into me, and my movements were mocked nonstop from the day I first went to public school, I started holding my arms so rigid it’s like I’m trying to retract them into my body. I’m relearning to let my hands dance when I walk and surprise surprise, it works
    When we move funny it’s probably because we intuitively feel when somethings wonky and are adapting around it. There’s so much emphasis on “fixing” our movement but it’s quality of movement that counts not aesthetics.

    Another great video! What if you can't feel or don't really know if you feel your "side abs"? Also does scapular position matter like should they be protracted or retracted or any of the other scapular positions when performing the exercise? Love all the great info you provide!

    I have to consciously walk every step since I have knee pain after a toe injury and try avoid apt bad movement patterns, activate glutes toes arms

    5:00 I find this really difficult due to an inability to sit on my heels. I'm not sure if this is a me thing and I just can't, or if my quads are too tight or there is something else that can be corrected to improve that level of mobility. It's been this way since at least my teens and I'm now in my early 40s. I've done a fair bit of hockey, rock climbing, hiking etc so I've always had strong legs, but they're certainly not great on flexability. In the past I've written this off due to my height (6'7") as even after a year of yoga/pilates my mobility didn't really improve beyond the gains I'd already made in rock climbing.
    Also with regards to my quads, there's no pain under pressure, so it doesn't feel like there is knotted or problematic tissue that needs to be worked out.
    2 months late but maybe someone will see it and offer a direction to look into.

      Toe sits are painful. I’m doing it barefoot and I need to rest and tap my feet in between. Maybe better with shoes?

    I'm a 45 year old trick driver with bulging disc's in neck and back. I've retrained myself to walk with abs tight and less stomping of my heels. Helps some.

    Does the ribcage itself actually twist, or just the thoracic spine ? Mine has about as much twist as that skeleton dummy, even though my rib flare is settling down as I keep working on this .... Thanks for the vids, I really appreciate these more simplistic type of exercise with fewer moving parts!
