The guillotine became the preferred method of execution during the French Revolution as it was believed at the time to actually be the most humane method of capital punishment because it was fast and over quick.
But as time went on, more evidence accumulated that the death was not as quick as previously thought.

I'll never forget the story I read, reported by a U.S. Army veteran who had been stationed in Korea, who watched his friend get decapitated in a car crash and apparently understood what happened to him before dying. I actually tracked down the story to make sure I didn't get any of the details wrong here:
In June 1989 the taxi he and a friend were riding in collided with a truck. The man was pinned in the wreckage while his friend ended up being completely decapitated. Here's what he reported happened:
"My friend's head came to rest, face up, and (from my angle,) upside-down. As I watched, his mouth opened and closed no less than two times. The facial expressions he displayed were first of shock or confusion, followed by terror or grief. I cannot exaggerate and say that he was looking all around, but he did display ocular movement in that his eyes moved from me, to his body, and back to me. He had direct eye contact with me when his eyes took on a hazy, absent expression... and he was dead."

So apparently the man who was decapitated was unlucky enough to have his head fall between his own legs in such a position that he was able to look up and actually see his own body and understand what had happened to himself before he died...
True or not, I'll never forget it.

Marlin Brando described his death in a seen from the Movie "Apocalypse Now" after he had been fatally sliced up by a machete attack and was about to die as; "the horror...the horror." I think that pretty accurately sums up how a person would feel or what they might say, if they were able to talk, in the brief seconds following decapitation by a guillotine. Actual horror I believe, is truly indescribable!

If you die from blood loss you're aware you're dying, but after a time you cannot seem to summon the will to care about it. It's kind of peaceful. I almost bleed to death about 15 years ago, it was only 4 units of packed red cells that saved me. Much of what happened is lost to me, but I do remember realising I was dying but surprisingly didn't care. It was bloody odd.

I fell to the floor, remaining conscious for a few seconds, not exactly sure how long but somewhere between 20 and 30 seconds. I remember feeling comfortably warm, the stone floor felt soft and I felt perfectly calm and content, fully aware I was dying and that these were my last seconds alive. Woke up in ICU a week later. I have lost all fear of death as a result.

We are truly lucky to be living in an age where we'll likely die at our own volition because of disease or immediately in a nuclear hellstorm.
But what if life isn't the end, and reincarnation is the truth? We could have been some of these people (possibly even one of Vlad the Impaler's victims). We could have been aliens who lived even worst lives, and feel even more suffering than what humanity has ever experienced. Really makes you think, and gives you very strong panic attacks. I really hope I'm born into a post-scarcity alien race in my next life and hope I have the option to choose when I die. I don't want to end up in another "Dark-Age" race thousands of light-years away, or be another victim of religious doctrine.

Would they just feel the senses that were still running as the blood rushes into their nose and falls out their brain? The cells in the brain will have residual oxygen to respire with for a short while, but I think the drop in blood pressure will have a significant effect on consciousness and therefore lucidity. In other words, you may be conscious, but probably not fully aware. This can be seen in intensive care patients, where their conscious state seems to run in correlation to their arterial blood pressure, visible on a monitor. So it may not be as bad as is first imagined. It's just my opinion based on circumstances I have witnessed, but I hope I'm correct for the sake of the victims. It is a very different set of circumstances, so there may be mechanisms at play which I haven't considered. Great video, very interesting. 😀

The only reason that some people that ride those things stay conscious, is they don't feel there is any real danger. But when you under a huge blade, there is real danger. The second the blade hits you, the brain starts the process. It is the same reason that when they use local anesthetic, they keep you on monitors during surgery. They need to know when you go into shock because you can loses consciousness and die very rapidly from that shock. Sorry to ruin your fun... but facts matter.

FWIW, I experienced a cardiac arrest a few years ago. The first sensation I had that something had gone wrong was dizziness, and I passed out within a few seconds. The doctors told me that my heart had probably stopped 30 seconds or so before I felt dizzy, because that's how long it takes for the oxygen levels in the brain to drop enough to lose consciousness. So, I have experienced this shutting down of all the different parts of the brain. My memories did not all play back. In fact I was completely unaware that my heart had stopped. During those 30 seconds, I was talking to my friends and gathering my belongings as we had just gotten out of the ocean, as if everything was normal. Of course, someone being executed would be painfully aware of what is going on, so the experience would be completely different. But I can say from experience that memory playback is not automatic, at least in one instance. And, just in case, no, I would not like to compare the two experiences, thank you.

    • @sphinxxxx9898
      @sphinxxxx9898 Год назад +5

I think it depends on the length of time one is dead. I also experienced cardiac arrest years back and at first it went exactly as you described. However, it was only some time later that I kind of woke up in what I thought at that moment to be a cinema, because it was dark all around me a part from what I perceived as being a big screen in front of me. It was only as I watched what was obviously my own life and saw me collapsing while on the bus, that I realised that something was not okay with me, though I still did not feel frightened, because I never actually heard of death experiences before, so I still did not comprehend my experiences as something so dramatic. After the life review was over I was in the complete darkness again, but I felt cold, so I began to pull myself together, as if I was pulling myself out of cold and wet clothes, starting with feet and then hands, though I weren't struggling as one would if it was really just the clothing I was coming out from, so it did not take too long before I was out, which was the moment when I suddenly saw the medical stuff above me and heard all the noises of the emergency room. Then came the great force that threw me back into the wet cold darkness. I tried to escape again, but the second powerful blast came and after that I went completely unconscious again. I came to some time later in recovery room, hooked up to all kinds. Took me a while to recover and finally realise (learn) that what I experienced was death.

This is interesting because it also seems to speak to how Alzheimer's patients go! They almost all return to dreamlike versions of their childhood, often muddling them up with more contemporary, but significant episodes of their lives! Bizarre? Certainly! Unexpected? Of course!
But in retrospect and how one has dreams, maybe not so much...
I've gone through dementia with my mother, and then full-blown Alzheimer's... She had episodes at 2:00 every afternoon where she had an uncontrollable urge/need to get home to babysit the 'twins'! She went to High School in a Catholic Convent overseas. She never babysat anyone as a teen, but DID have twins as her first kids! She would panic every day at almost precisely at 2:00 in the afternoon, no watch, nothing to make the time, and when she experienced this, she was living in the Caribbean and nowhere close to LA where she actually was!
Before we'd found her this home, we were checking out suitable places in Nor-Cal, and my brother and I went to see the Activity room for the folks. There were wedding dresses for the ladies to do needlework or whatever in prep for their imaginary upcoming marriages!
A tall guy standing next to me, starts talking about our last mission and what a bitch it was! It turns out that he was a Mustang Fighter pilot in WWII and somehow thought I was his wingman or something!!!! Now, I hardly look like a WWII pilot! I look like a guy with a ponytail who rides a Harley!
I just went along with him because... what else are ya gonna do?!? "It was brutal, man and those fucking Krauts were giving us hell!!! I'm glad we got home though"! He shook my hand...!
The mind is a lot stranger, and there are so many aspects about it that there is no AI that can outwit us! That's my belief! AI mat get intent on doing evil to humanity, but it can never match the human mind. IMHO...

Reminds me of the Challenger accident, because they're fairly certain that the cockpit blew away from the tank explosion (there's footage where they zoom in on it) and at least a few of the astronauts rode it down for almost two minutes. Then they died on impact as they struck the ocean. It's also thought that they have audio of them screaming, but the official NASA statement is that they last words heard from the crew was, "Oh no."

@@MasterJediDude I don't think any space agency would release audio of their astro/taiko/cosmonauts screaming till death

@@iamrightoutsideyourwindowhello yeah, they’d never release it, but I have a sick feeling that it exists. Same with the Columbia.

He just broke physics in the first 30 seconds.... ACCELERATION due to gravity is 9.8 m/s^2; that’s not the speed. Joules are a unit of energy, not force... all that was pretty bad...

Ben Wilson you are absolutely correct. I had a defibrillator implant at one time in my teenage years and the energy to jolt me was measured in joules. I caught that myself.

Llama Boi I would advise you to be careful of who you call a nerd “Llama Boi.” Why don’t you go back to second grade to learn real life facts before insulting people.

In my near death experience. I was able to hear and see for a long long time. However, after leaving my body and falling backwards through, the only way I can explain a tunnel. A tunnel with such force that even jumping 360 ft by bungee, didn’t compare. I could still see. I saw from a far a light that was through my eyes on my body. So not sure if senses go first. Just my experience
